Zips Sweep Doubleheader At Home
AKRON, Ohio — Frigid weather didn't stop the University of Akron women's tennis team from picking up a pair of wins on Friday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. In the afternoon match, Akron defeated Cleveland State, 5-2. The Vikings fell to 1-7 overall. In the evening, the Zips swept Findlay, 7-0. The Oilers fell to 3-11 on the season. With the two victories, Akron improved to 7-4 overall.
"Today we played much more consistently in singles than we probably have all spring," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Karolina played excellent tennis, defeating a young lady that has been playing exceptional tennis recently. I may be most impressed with Sophia though, losing only three total games in singles, playing #5 and #1 respectively, in both matches. Playing 1st singles for the first time in her career, Sophia defeated a player that transferred to Findlay from Division I Florida International, and she didn't lose a game. She also went 2-0 at 1st doubles with Martina, so she had a great day all around."
In doubles action against Cleveland State, UA claimed the team point with two wins. At the No. doubles spot, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) and freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Lauren Golick and Ellen Folkers, 6-4. At the No. 3 spot, senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) and freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) beat Mathilde Orange and Aleksandra Golawska, 6-3.
In singles play against the Vikings, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogliev, Belarus) claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Victoria Bensimon. Shkundina, Geier, and Blinova each picked up wins in singles action as well.
Against Findlay, the Zips won at No. 1 and No. 2 to win the doubles point. .Zerbola and Geier picked up their second win on the day with a 6-1 defeat of Nina Djordjevic and Tijana Raicevic.
In singles action, Akron swept all play. Geier moved up to No. 1 for the first time in her collegiate career and registered a 6-0, 6-0 win over Djordjevic.

Falcons Fall at Michigan State
Host Michigan State University won at each singles flight Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21), capping a 7-0 win over a youthful, shorthanded Bowling Green State University tennis team. The non-conference dual was held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Courts.
"It was a tough day today, but the girls fought hard and competed well," said Falcon head coach Olga Elkin.
Due to injuries, the Falcons fielded a lineup of just five players, forfeiting at the third doubles and sixth singles flights. BG's lineup consisted of five first-year Falcons.
Two of those Falcons, freshmen Megan Miller and Emily Witt, battled an MSU doubles team to a 3-3 standoff at the top flight before the match was halted. MSU's Anna Zelechonok and Aslina Chua won a 6-2 decision at the second flight, defeating BG's duo of sophomore Leeah Floyd and freshman Sydney Seeley.
At that number-two flight, the Spartans opened up a 3-0 lead, but Floyd and Seeley took two of the next three games to get within a 4-2 score. But, MSU was able to take the next two games to get the win and earn the doubles point for the Green and White.
Miller and Witt never trailed in their top-flight match against Hilary Hager and Julianne Gruber taking leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2. The Spartans battled back to tie the contest on three occasions, before play was stopped.
In singles action, Athena Trouillot topped Miller at the number-one flight, while Emily Meyers defeated Witt at the second flight. Sophomore Antonina Farrar was forced to retire after her first set at flight number four, giving MSU's Colleen O'Brien the victory.
Zelechonok defeated Seeley at the fifth flight, and Allie Baer was victorious against Floyd in third-flight action.
The Falcons take to the road again next weekend, heading to Fort Wayne for a Friday night (Feb. 27) dual vs. IPFW. Starting time for that match is 7:00 p.m.
