Cardinals Serve Up 7-0 Win at Wright State
DAYTON, Ohio - The Ball State men's tennis team rolled past Wright State, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Dayton Center Courts facility. With the win the Cardinals improved to 4-5 on the season while the Raiders fall to 2-5 in spring action.
The Cardinals took the early 1-0 advantage over the Raiders after earning a 6-1 win on court No. 2 and a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot. Ray Leonard paired up with teammate Collin Rigney for the win at the No. 2 doubles position and Lucas Andersen alongside fellow Cardinal Matt Helm claimed the match on court three.
After that, Ball State took all six singles matches from Dayton. Andersen, Leonard, Patrick Elliott, Jan Jirus and Rigney all defeated their respective opponents in straight sets. Andrew Stutz would take down Simon Cote' on court five in a three set thriller. Stutz dropped the first set to Cote' 6-0 but came back to win the second set 6-2 and then clinched the win with a 6-0 victory in set three.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues non-conference action when it hosts a doubleheader Friday against Anderson (3:30 p.m.) and Taylor University (6:30 p.m.) at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
Binghamton:
Binghamton Falls At Brown, 5-2
MANCHESTER, Mass. - Binghamton won a pair of singles matches and also captured the No. 1 doubles match but 61st-ranked Brown (7-2) prevailed 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Mancester Athletic Club.
After the host Bears grabbed the doubles point, four of the singles matches went to a third set, with BU winning two of the extended matches. Junior Eliott Hureau dropped the first set at No. 3 before rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 win. Hureau won the tiebreak 7-3 to claim victory. Sophomore No. 6 Frenk Kote also posted a three-set win, rolling to a 6-2 final-set score.
"In terms of attitude, effort and composure today was the most complete match that wehave played," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "I am proud of the way we battled on every court. We needed to do a better job of executing and running our pace when we were up. In order to beat ranked teams like Brown we need to capitalize on the first opportunity and not let them hang around."
Binghamton next plays at Columbia on Feb. 27.

Men's Tennis Falls At Dartmouth, 6-1
HANOVER, N.H. - Junior No. 1 Sid Hazarika posted a three-set win over the 93rd-ranked player in the country but host Dartmouth (6-4) defeated Binghamton men's tennis 6-1 Friday night at the Boss Tennis Center.
Hazarika dropped the first set before roaring back to earn his biggest win of the year. Earlier, senior Robin Lesage and junior Eliott Hureau teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
"It was a big win for Sid today," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "He's really been focused in practice on staying patient with his patterns and it's showing in his matches. Robin and Eliott put in another solid performance in doubles. They were very consistent with the energy which is key. We still need to work on putting together a complete match through all doubles and all singles."
The Bearcats (2-5) will have a short turnaround before facing Brown at noon Saturday at the Manchester Athletic Club (Mass.).

Bulls Win Third Straight With 5-2 Win Over Youngstown State
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team won its third straight and sixth of last seven matches defeating Youngstown State 5-2 Saturday at Miller Tennis Center.
Prior to the start of the match, the Bulls welcomed Ruben to the roster as part of a Team IMPACT initiative. He is the newest and youngest member of the Bulls' squad.
The Bulls (7-3) won the doubles point with victories at the first and third spots. Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo posted an 8-5 victory in the top match, while juniors Amar Hromic and Akhil Mehta defeated the Penguins' (2-5) third doubles duo, 8-3.
The Bulls won four matches at third through sixth singles. Junior Pablo Alvarez defeated Bassem El Mekawi, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in third singles. At four, Hromic outlasted Dawoud Kabli, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Arevalillo was victorious at five, ousting Youssef Sherif, 6-1, 6-3, and Hannestad won sixth singles over Victor Pereira, 6-4, 6-1.
"Even though we got two wins this weekend, we still aren't at the level we expect," said sixth-year head coach Lee Nickell. "The coaching staff is determined to create a dominant team, and we have yet to have all six players play at their best to give us the result we want. There is a strenuous schedule ahead and we have to be 100 percent disciplined if we plan on winning anymore matches."
The Bulls will travel to Princeton to take on Monmouth Saturday, Feb. 28 at 6 pm, before facing the host Tigers Sunday, March 1 at 10 am.

Men's Tennis Overpowers Niagara, 6-1
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team dominated local opponent Niagara, 6-1, Friday evening at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls (6-3) have won five of their last six matches and improved to 99-3-1 all-time against Niagara (2-3) dating back to 1940.
UB opened the match with a sweep in doubles play. The first doubles duo of sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo picked up a 6-4 victory. At the number two spot, senior Damien David and redshirt-sophomore Tony Miller outlasted the Purple Eagles, 7-5, while at third doubles junior Akhil Mehta and rookie Noah Hajdu-Andersson blanked Niagara, 6-1.
Senior Sebastian Ionescu defeated Michael Elortegui in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at second doubles. At the fourth position, junior Amar Hromic edged David Raymond, 7-6, 4-6, 10-5. The Bulls dominated fifth and sixth singles with Mehta upending Francis Nadeau, 6-1, 6-1, and Miller claiming a 6-0, 6-4 win over Rares Ispas.
David's top singles match was retired due to a Niagara injury, while Hannestad suffered a three-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 loss at fourth singles to David Raymond.
The Bulls return to action on Saturday hosting Youngstown State at 1 pm.

Northern Illinois:
Huskies Earn First Road Win With 4-3 Decision At Butler
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team earned a 4-3 decision at Butler on Saturday afternoon, to earn its first road win of the season. The victory improved the Huskies to 6-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Butler took the match at number one, 6-2, over senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit) and freshman Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege).
NIU evened the doubles with a win at number three as junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and freshman Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) earned a 6-4 victory over Tommy Marx and Sam O’Neill.
Butler outlasted NIU at number two doubles as Alex and Austin Woldmoe clipped freshman Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and freshman Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun), 7-6 (6).
In singles play, NIU won three-set matches at number one, two and four to get the Huskies off to a good start. Cadieux was victorious at number one over Austin Woldmoe, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. At number two, Formont also dropped the first set before rallying to defeat Brandon Woods, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The same was true at number four where Hamel earned a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback victory over Alex Woldmoe.
Butler has won at number three as Hjertonsson fell to Sam O’Neill, 6-4, 6-3, as the match came down to the final two singles spots.
The Huskies clinched the match win as sophomore Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe), who did not play in the doubles matches, earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-3, victory over Tommy Marx to earn just his third dual match victory of the spring.
NIU will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 28, as the Huskies travel to St. Louis, Mo., to face the Billikens. The match against Saint Louis is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Toledo:
Rockets Fall in Wednesday Doubleheader
LOUISVILLE, KY - The Toledo men's tennis team ran into two nationally ranked teams on Wednesday afternoon, falling in both contests. The Rockets lost 4-0 to No. 38 Louisville in the first match of the day and 4-1 to No. 36 Indiana in the day's second contest.
"We played two solid teams today," head coach Al Wermer said. "Especially vs. Indiana, we showed how good we can be. Our doubles teams looked more comfortable, and played with the spirit we expect."
Sophomore Stjepan Sisko recorded the only point of the day, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 singles spot in Toledo's match vs. the Hoosiers. His contest in the match vs. the Cardinals went unfinished. Sisko is now 12-2 on the season and is on a three-match win streak.
The senior duo of Roberto Meza and Nicky Wong earned a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot in the Indiana match as well. Sisko and freshman Omar Espinosa were close to claiming the doubles point, but fell in a tiebreak, 12-10.
Sisko and Espinosa went to a tiebreak in the Louisville match as well, but were unable to come out on top.
The Rockets are off until Friday, March 6 when they travel to take on IUPUI. Two days later, Toledo will have its second road match of the weekend at Morehead State.
Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader
CHAMPAIGN, IL - The Toledo men's tennis team split its two matches on Sunday, defeating Eastern Illinois, 4-3, and falling to No. 6 Illinois, 4-0, at the Atkins Tennis Center.
In the first match of the day, the Rockets won two of three doubles matchups to capture the first point of the match.
Sophomore Stjepan Sisko and freshman Omar Espinosa won their fifth match of the season as a doubles team, with a 6-0 sweep at the top doubles spot.
Senior Mark Singnil and junior Garrett Cona recorded a hard-fought 7-6 win at the No. 2 doubles spot to clinch the doubles point for the Midnight Blue & Gold.
In singles play, Sisko earned his 11th win of the year with a 7-6, 6-2 victory at the top singles spot, while Singnil and freshman Stephen Miller won at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively, to give the Rockets the win.
In the second match of the day, Toledo was swept 4-0, losing each of its doubles matchups and three singles contests.
The Rockets are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 25 when they hit the road to take on Indiana and Louisville. Both matches will be held in Louisville, KY.

Men's Tennis Earns 4-3 Win over Michigan State
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team kept alive a 13-year-old streak of success against the Big Ten with a thrilling finish at home on Saturday, as the Broncos defeated the 60th-ranked Michigan State Spartans 4-3 at West Hills Athletic Club to notch their sixth straight win. The victory improves the Broncos to 8-3 on the season. WMU has now beaten at least one Big Ten school in each of the last 13 seasons.
The match came down to the final two singles matches on the court, with the Broncos’ top two spots in the line-up closing out the win. The Broncos won four of the six singles matches played on Saturday, coming back from a 1-0 deficit after doubles play to secure victory. Freshman Jefta Kecic clinched the win by recovering from a second-set loss to beat the Spartans’ Brett Forman 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match, punctuating the comeback with a dominant third set.
Fellow freshman Maik Steiner put Kecic in the position to win the match by coming back from his own deficit, bouncing back from being a set down to down 109th-ranked Gijs Linders 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match. That turned what had been a 3-2 match advantage for the Spartans into a 3-3 tie, allowing Kecic to finish things off at the top of the line-up.
Jimmy Beckwith got things rolling in singles play with a straight-sets win over Jasper Koenen at No. 5 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1 to tie the overall match. Following him was Matt Hamilton, who cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over John Patrick Mullane at the No. 3 spot to put the Broncos ahead by a 2-1 score. Hamilton was also part of the only winning doubles team for the Broncos, teaming with Stephen Payne to down Forman and Linders 6-1.

Broncos Sweep Doubleheader At Home
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team continued its current roll with doubleheader sweep on Friday, defeating the Cleveland State Vikings 4-3 in the early match and sweeping the Wayne State Warriors 7-0 at West Hills Athletic Club. With the wins, the Broncos improve to 7-3 overall and have won five straight dual matches.
Matt Hamilton went 2-0 in singles play on the afternoon and also went undefeated in doubles action, teaming with Stephen Payne to win at both Nos. 2 and 3 doubles in both respective matches. The sophomore clinched the team win for the Broncos against the Vikings in the first match of the day and contributed to the shutout in the second match of the day against the Warriors.
The doubles pairing of Jimmy Beckwith and Jefta Kecic started things off in the match against the Vikings, holding off Jorg Van Der Vloet and Colton Buffington for a 6-3 win to open the session. Payne and Hamilton clinched the session for the Broncos with a 6-2 win over Mirko Radosevic and Manuell Bellutti in the No. 2 doubles match, giving WMU a 1-0 advantage in the overall match.
The Vikings tied the overall match with a win at No. 3 singles, but Maik Steiner put the Broncos back ahead 2-1 when he cruised past Joe VanMeter 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Kecic made it a 3-1 advantage with a straight-sets win over Ali Shabib at No. 2, but the Vikings claimed the next two matches on the board to tie the match at 3-3. Hamilton clinched the team win for the Broncos with a three-setter against Bellutti at the No. 4 spot, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to take the overall match and open the day with a win.
It was much smoother sailing for WMU in the nightcap against Wayne State as the Broncos took eight of the nine matches on the court, winning 7-0 by sweeping the singles session and taking two of three doubles matches. Steiner and Ruben Greiner blew past Luke Ruocco and Trey Keating 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles match to give the Broncos the lead in the session, and Payne and Hamilton clinched the extra point with a 6-2 win over Harvey Reed and Clement Charriere in the No. 3 doubles match.
Payne defeated Ryan Carlson 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match to give the Broncos a 2-0 advantage in the team match, and Greiner put WMU in a position to win the team match with a straight sets victory in the No. 1 singles match. Hamilton again clinched the team match with a singles win, this time beating Charriere 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 singles spot to make it a 4-0 win. Pablo Mora won a straight-sets match against Keating to make it 5-0, and Marc Shideler and Andrew Cahn each won in third-set tiebreakers to seal the 7-0 shutout win.
