JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Akron softball team opened play at the Jacksonville University Invitational on Friday with a 2-1 win over Syracuse.

The Zips capped off the day with a hard-fought 8-5 loss to Bethune-Cookman.

The Zips stand 3-4 overall, while the Orange fell to 3-3. The win was the first for the Wildcats (1-5) this season.

"We played a very good game in game one today against a powerful offense.  Erin was effective after the first inning again, and our offense came through when we needed it," head coach Julie Jones said. "In game two, our defense was very uncharacteristically inconsistent, and we aren't in a position to give away outs.  However, I was happy with our offense, and we continued to fight through the entire game."

In the opener, Akron jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first as senior shortstop Chelsea Wildey (Oviedo, Fla.) singled to left field, bringing in senior second baseman Kellie Roudabush (Hilliard, Ohio) who reached after being hit by a pitch. The Orange tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore third baseman Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) scored the game-winning run on a two-out home run, her first homer of the season (fourth of her career).

Junior right-hander Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) picked up her third win (3-1) of the season. She went the distance, striking out nine batters and walking two.

Against Bethune-Cookman, the Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added two more runs in the third to go ahead 5-0. The Zips closed the gap with two runs in the top of the fifth. Senior pitcher Sara Pearson (Somerville, Ohio) had an RBI single to center field, brining in sophomore outfielder Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.), who reached and advanced to third on an error. Senior outfielder Taryn Allmon (Grove City, Ohio) brought in freshman first baseman Cassie Gillespie (Sylvania, Ohio) with a single to left field.

BC added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-2 lead.

Akron added three runs in the top of the six as Pearson hit a three RBI double up the middle.

Pearson (1-1) started on the mound for Akron. She pitched 2.1 innings, struck out two and walked three. Freshman Paige McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) came in relief, throwing 3.2 innings and fanning three batters.

Tournament action continues on Saturday, Feb. 14, as Akron re-plays Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m. and then faces host Jacksonville in the night cap at 6 p.m. All games will be played at JU's Pruitt Softball Complex.

Unfortunately, GSU answered with two more runs in the bottom of the second to pull ahead 5-2.

Ball State would break onto the scoreboard thanks to Houck’s leadoff blast in the top of the third, only to see Auburn retire the final nine Cardinals’ batters. The Tigers’ offense posted three more runs in the third and two in the fourth to give the game its final score of 12-1.

EMU (0-2) was out-hit 10-7 in the contest with the Aggies notching four extra-base hits, while seven different Eagles nabbed a hit. Senior Lindsay Rich led the Eagles at the plate with a home run and earned her second start of the season in the circle. Schilke was unable to get the ball out of the infield, reaching on a fielder's choice as the Aggies were able to throw Davidson out at home to avoid the run before Haley Hostetler popped out to the shortstop to close out the inning for the Green and White.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Kent State opened the 2015 softball season with a pair of victories Friday at the University of San Diego Tournament. The Golden Flashes defeated Southern Utah in eight innings, 5-3, to start the day and then took care of Montana, 8-2, in the nightcap.

The starting pitching tandem of senior Emma Johnson and sophomore Ronnie Ladines was terrific in their season debuts and juniors Michele Duffy and Shelbi Tilton each had a four-RBI game to spark the offense.

"I'm happy that we were able to start the season with two wins," said head coach Karen Linder. "Playing outside for the first time can be challenging and both teams we played already had games last weekend. We got strong performances from our pitchers and our hitting really came around in the second game. Defensively, we were solid all day."

Kent State managed just four hits in the opener against Southern Utah. Three of those hits came off the bat of Duffy, who broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with a bases-clearing double that gave the Flashes a 3-0 lead.

The Flashes were two outs from securing victory, when three walks, a hit batter and an error allowed Southern Utah to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

With the international tiebreaker in play, Dani Ramos was placed on second to start the eighth inning. Back-to-back errors allowed Ramos to score the go-ahead run and Duffy added a single that scored Lauren Kesterson later in the inning.

Johnson (1-0) was terrific in the pitcher's circle for Kent State. She struck out nine batters and allowed just one earned run and two hits in seven innings. Junior Alyssa Frankenfield retired the side in the bottom of the eighth for the save. Frankenfield had one strikeout.

The second game saw the Flashes tee off on Montana for 14 hits. The Flashes plated two in the first inning. After Kesterson drew a walk, senior Kim Kirkpatrick brought her home with a triple. Kirkpatrick then scored on a groundout by Tilton.

Montana responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning and the score was tied until the top of the third. Kirkpatrick got a leadoff single and advanced on a wild pitch before coming around to score in a single by Tilton. The Flashes added three runs in the following inning. Tilton delivered a two-out single that brought home Ramos and Paige McCrary. After loading the bases, a wild pitch allowed Emily Dobbin to score and give the Flashes a 6-2 lead.

Kent State added its final two runs in the fifth inning. Lauren Kesterson singled to score twin sister Chloe Kesterson and Ramos scored on a failed pickoff attempt.

Ladines (1-0) settled in after the first inning to get the win. She allowed just two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings while striking out four batters and added a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Frankenfield pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief and had two strikeouts.

Kent State continues play at the USD Tournament on Saturday with a rematch against Southern Utah at 12 p.m. before taking on host San Diego at 2:30 p.m.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Miami University softball team had its offense working the entire day, while two great pitching performances led to a doubleheader sweep of Austin Peay on Friday. The RedHawks won the opener, 13-2. They came back to take the nightcap, 9-0. That game ended in five innings due to the run rule. Miami is now 5-2 on the season, while the Governors fall to 1-6.

The highlight of Friday’s doubleheader came in the second game where senior pitcher/third baseman Remy Edwards threw her first career no-hitter. After being exclusively in the infielder in her first three seasons, she was making only her third career start (fourth appearance) in the circle. She struck out a career-high nine and retired the other six on fly outs without giving up a hit in five innings pitched.

While in the end she would not need them, the Miami offense gave Edwards plenty of support in that second game when it scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall led off with a walk. One batter later, junior outfielder Taylor Shuey doubled her home to put the RedHawks on the board. A double from senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb scored Shuey, while a single from freshman infielder Kaitlyn Gliha scored Lipscomb and made it 3-0.

Singles from freshman catcher Kat Lee and senior shortstop Kylie McChesney loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore third baseman Jenna Jones quickly unloaded them with her first career home run, a grand slam over the center field wall that gave Miami a 7-0 lead.

Sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver scored in the top of the second inning off a wild pitch, while Lee scored in the fifth off an error. Edwards completed her no-hitter by retiring three batters in order in the bottom of the fifth, and with a larger than eight-run lead, the game was declared over due to the run rule.

Jones finished the nightcap 1-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored. Marshall, Gliha and Lee each had two hit days for the ‘Hawks.

The Miami offense was on fire in the first game as well as it banged out a season-high 13 runs on 18 hits. It started with two runs in the top of the first inning. With Marshall on second base, a single from Shuey scored her. A single from junior first baseman Hailey Reed moved Shuey up to second base, while a single to center field by senior designated player Megan Mattera scored her and gave the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.

Playing third base in the opening game, Edwards led off the top of the third with her first home run of the season to put Miami on top 3-0. Senior catcher Shanyn McIntyre followed with a double down the left field line. After Marshall sacrifice bunted McIntyre to third base, a double to right center by McCarver brought her home. Austin Peay made a pitching change, but Shuey welcomed the new pitcher with a triple down the left field line to score McCarver and make it 5-0.

Miami added two more in the top of the fourth inning when Lipscomb doubled to left field to score Shuey and McCarver. A solo home run by McChesney in the top of the fifth made it 8-1.

With the ‘Hawks up 8-2, they put the game away with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. McIntyre hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give Miami a 10-2 advantage. Marshall followed with a single up the middle. One batter later, a double from Shuey scored Marshall. A double from Lipscomb scored Shuey, and Reed completed the RedHawks’ scoring with a double down the left field line to score Lipscomb.

Meanwhile, junior pitcher Amber Logemann was nearly as dominant as Edwards would be later on in the day. She struck out a career-high 13 Governor hitters in six innings pitched. She allowed only two earned runs and five hits. Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Fredericks came on in the bottom of the seventh and kept Austin Peay off the board to complete the 13-2 victory.

Shuey finished the opener 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Lipscomb was 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. McChesney was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while McIntyre was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Reed and Marshall also had two hits for the RedHawks in the game.

Miami returns to action Feb. 21-22 when it travels to Nashville for the Tiger Classic. On Saturday, Feb. 21, the RedHawks will take on Bradley at 10 a.m. (EST) and Loyola (Chi.) at 12:15 p.m. (EST).
