Ball State:
Men's Tennis Wins 4-3 Thriller Over Xavier
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team rallied for a thrilling 4-3 victory over Xavier in non-conference action Friday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win the Cardinals improve to 3-5 overall while the Musketeers fall to 5-3 on the season.
"It was a nice comeback win for our guys," Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "It showed a lot of resiliency. After losing the doubles point and four first sets in singles it wasn't looking good. But we fought back and found a way to win. Hopefully we can build on this after a disappointing start to our year."
The Cardinals fell behind early 1-0 to the Musketeers after losing the doubles point. The doubles tandem of Patrick Elliott and Andrew Stutz suffered a 6-3 setback to Zach Mueck and Matt Bishop at the No. 1 double slot. Lucas Andersen alongside teammate Matt Helm also fell short of a victory losing to Jeremy Schneider and Arthur Stefani by a score of 6-4 at the No. 3 position.
Ball State would answer in singles play after dropping four of the first sets, the Cardinals rebounded winning at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Leonard defeated Schneier in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 2 slot. Jan Jirus took a three set match from Freddy Abunku, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while teammate Stutz claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Connor LaFavre at No. 5 singles. The match came down to Elliott, where the senior would drop his first set 6-4 but would come back 7-6, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to clinch the match for Ball State.
The Ball State men's tennis team will continue non-conference action at Wright State (Feb. 22) before returning back home for a doubleheader Feb. 27 against Anderson and Taylor University.
Binghamton:
Binghamton Blanked By William & Mary
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Host William and Mary grabbed the doubles point and then won the first four completed singles matches to post a 5-0 win over Binghamton men's tennis Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Junior No. 3 Eliott Hureau led his match 2-1 in the third set when the match was halted with W&M clinching.
"William and Mary came out sharp, focused and intense and we didn't match them in every category point for point beginning to end," head coach Nck Zieziula said. "Eliott (Hureau) did a great job battling back but we can't afford such slow starts against quality teams."
The Bearcats next play at Dartmouth on Friday night.

Bearcats Fall To No. 59 VCU
RICHMOND, Va. - Binghamton men's tennis (2-3) put a scare into No. 59 VCU Friday afternoon before the Rams (8-3) rallied for a 4-3 win at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The Bearcats grabbed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then used singles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to forge a 3-1 lead. But VCU won the final three singles matches to pull out the one-point win.
"Our doubles play continues to be solid and improving each week," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "We need to do a better job of converting that lead but at the end of the year, if we keep up the work in doubles that is going to push a lot of close matches our way. Unfortunately, we let a big opportunity against a ranked team slip off our racket. That is an opportunity with a big lead in the team score that we need to convert on. We have improved match to match but there is still work to be done on managing our energy and focus the entire way through matches. We've got a great opportunity to go out and work on that again tomorrow."
Junior Sid Hazarika was a double winner, teaming with senior Ismael Dinia for a 6-4 win at the top doubles spot before earning a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 1 singles.
"Sid (Hazarika) played a great match today," Zieziula said. "He focused on his patterns this week in practice on it showed in his shot selection today."
The Bearcats face William & Mary at 10 a.m. Saturday in Williamsburg.

Rockets Win Streak Comes To An End
MILWAUKEE, WI - The Toledo men’s tennis team saw its six-match win streak come to an end, as it fell in two matches this weekend. The Rockets were swept on Friday at Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0, and lost to Marquette, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, WI.
In Friday’s match, Toledo was unable to get anything going, falling in all but one matchup in both singles and doubles action.
Senior Nicky Wong and junior Garrett Cona captured a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles for the Midnight Blue & Gold’s only win of the day. UT lost both of the other doubles matchups and were swept in singles play, as the Phoenix took home the win.
On Saturday, the Midnight Blue & Gold lost the doubles point, but bounced back with two wins in singles action.
“We competed a million times better than yesterday,” head coach Al Wermer said. “We’ll benefit from some long overdue hard training.”
After losing the doubles point, sophomore Stjepan Sisko earned his 10th win of the season, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the top singles spot, after losing just his second match of the year on Friday.
Senior Mark Singnil also produced a singles victory at the No. 3 spot, winning 7-5, 6-3.
The Rockets are back in action with two matches on Sunday, Feb. 22, when they take on Eastern Illinois and Illinois in Champaign, IL.
