Additional Nominees:
Brandon Zeerip, Eastern Michigan—Senior, Freemont, Mich. (Hesperia High School)
Eastern Michigan senior Brandon Zeerip was the lone Eagle to capture two wins in the Green and White's two losses last weekend. The redshirt-senior knotted the score at 9-9 when Eastern Michigan took on Northern Illinois with a 3-2 decision over the Huskies' Andrew Morse. In the Eagles loss to No. 2 Missouri, Zeerip secured the first win of the day for the Green and White with a 4-1 decision over Trevor Weist at 157 lbs. Zeerip is just one win away from the 20-win plateau as he posts a 19-10 overall record and a 3-2 record in conference competition.
Mike DePalma, Kent State—Junior, Jeannette, Pa. (Jeannette High School)
Kent State junior Mike DePalma recorded a first period pin of Northern Iowa’s Gunnar Wolfensperger in Sunday’s dual at the M.A.C. Center. Wolfensperger was No. 26 in last week’s Wrestling Report rankings. DePalma leads the Golden Flashes with 11 bonus-point victories on the year.
Shawn Scott, Northern Illinois—Sophomore, Holly, Mich. (Holly High School)
Northern Illinois sophomore Shawn Scott got a big boost to his NCAA resume Friday night with a win over Eastern Michigan's Anthony Abro. With the Huskies holding on to an 18-9 lead, Scott and Abro battled to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation, then remained deadlock after the first round of overtime. However, in the second tiebreaker period, Scott got an escape and a takedown for the 7-5 victory. The Holly, Michigan, native is 19-9 on the year and is currently ranked 28th in the NCAA Coaches Panel.
Jarrett Jensen, Northern Iowa—Junior, Rapid City, South Dakota
Northern Iowa junior Jarrett Jensen knocked off No. 4 Ian Miller of Kent State and avenged a loss he dropped in sudden victory last year to Ohio’s Sparty Chino at 157 pounds in two weekend duals. Jensen put the Panthers on the board at Ohio. After a scoreless first period, Chino got a reversal to go up 2-0. Jensen countered with his own reversal. Chino’s escape gave him a one-point lead heading into the third period. Chino was warned for stalling, and Jensen tied up the score with an escape. A final takedown in the third period won the match 5-3 for Jensen. Jensen knocked off the conference favorite, All-American Miller, two days after his win at Ohio. KSU’s Miller grabbed two takedowns against Jensen to lead 4-2 to start the second period. Then Jensen went on the offensive and erased No. 4 Ian Miller’s riding time. Miller was dinged for stalling, closing the scoring gap for Jensen, 4-3. A reversal in the third secured the upset for Jensen who went on to win 5-4. Jensen is now 18-10 overall, 4-3 in the MAC.
Phil Wellington, Ohio—Junior, Euclid, Ohio
Ohio junior Phil Wellington recorded a 10-0 major-decision victory on Friday evening against Northern Iowa’s Basil Minto, leading the Bobcats to a 20-18 triumph over the Panthers. This is the redshirt junior’s sixth major decision of the season, keeping him undefeated in Mid-American Conference competition and improving his overall record to 20-5.
