Kent State senior Ian Miller won the 157-pound title at the Navy Classic last Saturday going 4-0 overall.  He was one of only two champions at the tournament to win his final bout by major decision, a 13-4 victory over Brown’s Justin Staudenmayer.  Miller also had a major decision in his opening bout (15-5) over Princeton’s Kevin Moylan. In his quarterfinal bout, Miller recorded a second period pin against Wisconsin’s TJ Ruschell.  Miller’s first place helped the Golden Flashes finish second of 10 teams at the Navy Classic.

Additional Nominees:

Barlow McGhee, Missouri—Sophomore, Rock Island, Ill. (Rock Island H.S.)

Missouri sophomore Barlow McGhee picked up the most impressive win of his career to-date when he took down last year’s NCAA runner-up Zeke Moisey of West Virginia in the championship match of the 125-pound weight class at the Joe Parisi Open on Saturday. The 14-4 major decision over Moisey capped a perfect 5-0 week for McGhee, four wins coming in the tournament and one in the season-opening dual victory over SIU Edwardsville on Friday. The Rock Island, Ill. native helped Mizzou jump out to an early 5-0 lead with a 16-5 major decision over Troy Gassaway to begin the dual against SIUE. Mizzou would go on to win the dual, 36-7. McGhee recorded technical falls in the first two rounds of the Joe Parisi Open, the first a 22-3 TF over Robert Elliott (West Virgnina) and the second a 21-5 TF over Brady Sloup (Hannibal-LaGrande). McGhee then took down Zach D’Amico (Central Oklahoma) by way of decision, 3-1, in the semifinals before defeating Moisey in the finals.
