Ball State:

Men's Tennis Falls 6-1 at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Ball State men's tennis team fell to Cleveland State 6-1 Friday night at Paramount Tennis Club.  The Cardinals fall to 2-3 overall while the Vikings improve to 3-0 on the season.

The lone Ball State win came from freshman Collin Rigney at the No. 6 position where he defeated Mirko Radosevic in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 11-9.

The Cardinals dropped all three doubles matches to Cleveland State taking a 1-0 advantage into singles action.  Ball State's Patrick Elliott, Ray Leonard, Andrew Stutz and Jan Jirus all fell in straight sets to the Vikings.  Lucas Andersen put up at good fight at the No. 2 position, after taking the first set 6-4 from Ali Shabib but would fall in the last two sets 6-3.

The Ball State men's tennis team continues spring action at home against Big Ten foe Michigan State, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.


Buffalo:

Men’s Tennis Falls to Nationally-Ranked Central Florida, 4-0

WEST POINT, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team fell to 69th-ranked Central Florida Sunday Morning on day three of the Army Kickoff at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Knights (5-4) claimed a 4-0 victory over the Bulls (4-3) while playing a clinch/clinch format.

"It's been a broken record this spring, but we just aren't good enough at doubles," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We continue to compete with passion and energy, but we just aren't at the level to beat a good team like UCF yet. We will strive to get better this week as we prepare to play a very good Cleveland State team this weekend."

Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo teamed together at second doubles to edge the Knights, 6-4. Junior Akhil Mehta and freshman Noah Hajdu-Andersson battled, but suffered a 7-6 setback at the third position.

UB dropped a trio of singles matches, while the other three went unfinished. Junoir Pablo Alvarez forced a three-setter, but fell to Inaki Espindola, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at third singles. Arevalillo dropped the fourth singles match 6-2, 6-3 to Chris Barrus and Amar Hromic fell to Mariano Porter 6-4, 6-4 at the fifth spot.

In the clinch/clinch format, the winner of two out of three doubles matches wins the doubles point. The winner of four points total, doubles and singles combined, wins the match.

The Bulls return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 7 traveling to Cleveland State for a 6 pm match.

Bulls Defeat Boston College, 7-0

WEST POINT, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team upended ACC opponent Boston College 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Army Kickoff at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

The Bulls (4-2) went 6-0 in singles action and won two of three doubles matches against the Eagles (1-3).

Senior Damien David and junior Amar Hromic outlasted BC at first doubles, 7-6, and junior Akhil Mehta and freshman Noah Hajdu-Andersson posted a 6-3 victory at the third position.

David added a 6-4, 6-2 win in the top singles spot over Phillip Nelson. Senior Sebastian Ionescu defeated Aidan McNulty, 7-5, 6-1, at second singles and junior Pablo Alvarez secured a third-singles win of 6-3, 6-2 over Hank Workman.

Junior Sergio Arevalillo snuck out a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Kyle Childree at number four singles. At the fifth position, sophomore Jonathan Hannestad tallied a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 victory against Kent Mukai. Hajdu-Andersson closed out sixth singles defeating Will Turner, 6-4, 7-5.

The Bulls will conclude play at the Army Kickoff Sunday playing 69th-ranked Central Florida.

Men's Tennis Dominates Singles Play To Edge Army, 4-3

WEST POINT, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team (3-2) edged out host Army (0-1), 4-3, Friday afternoon on day one of the Army Kickoff at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

After narrowly dropping all three doubles matches to surrender the doubles point, the Bulls fought back to win four of six singles matches. The match was highlighted by a three-setter at first singles in the finale. With action knotted at 3-3, senior Damien David won the first, 6-4, before dropping the second 6-3. David ousted opponent, Sam Lampman, 6-2, in the third to secure the win for the Bulls.

UB kicked off singles play with three consecutive victories. At the third spot, junior Pablo Alvarez topped Grant Riechmann, 6-3, 6-1, before classmate Amar Hromic defeated Austin McCasin, 7-5, 6-3, at fifth singles. Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad snuck past Black Knight Michael Nguyen, 7-6 (6), 6-3 at the number six position for a 3-1 UB lead.

West Point picked up back-to-back wins at second and fourth singles to deadlock action at 3-3 with the match coming down to the first singles result.

The Bulls return to play on Saturday facing Boston College at Army at 3 pm.

Northern Illinois:

Huskies Fall At No. 53 Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision at 53rd-ranked Indiana on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 3-2 on the season while the Hoosiers improved to 4-1.

"When you play a team of this caliber you have got to get off to a better start and we did the opposite which is extremely disappointing," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "By the time we were able to get ourselves back in it, it was to late."

In doubles action, senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit ) and freshman Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) dropped a 6-2 decision to Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette at number one. Stefan Lugonjic and Chris Essick bettered freshmen Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) and Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) at number two, 6-0.

At number one singles, Monette defeated junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel), 6-3, 6-4. Daun fell at number three to Raheel Manji, 6-2, 6-0, while Lundkvist fell to Lugonjic, 6-3, 6-3, at number five.

The three other singles matches were not finished, including at numer two where Cadieux and Bednarczyk were early in the third set after Bednarczyk took the first, 6-3, and Cadieux claimed the second, 6-1.

NIU will return home next weekend as the Huskies host Binghamton on Friday, Feb. 6, in their first Mid-American Conference match of the season, scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.

Toledo:

Rockets Swept at Michigan State

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team was unable to get anything going on Saturday, as the Rockets fell 7-0 to Michigan State in a road out-of-conference match.  The Spartans came into the match ranked No. 59.

It was a tough day for the Rockets, as they fell in six of seven matchups vs. the Spartans.

Sophomore Stjepan Sisko suffered his first setback of the year, losing in three sets to No. 76 Gijs Linders. Sisko fell in the first set 6-4, before bouncing back with a 6-4 victory of his own in the second set. In the third and final set, he kept it close, but ended up falling 12-10.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, winning two of three doubles matchups, and didn't look back, winning all six singles matches.

Sunday's home matches against Findlay and Ferris State were both canceled due to expected inclement weather and travel conditions.

The Rockets are back in action on Friday, Feb. 6 for a home match against Butler at 1:00 p.m. and the rescheduled Ferris State match at 7:00 p.m.


Rockets Fall Short Vs. Xavier

CINCINNATI, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team fell in a hard-fought match to Xavier 4-3 in a road contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rockets fall to 1-3 on the season.

"This is one of those matches that certainly stings now," head coach Al Wermer said. "But I think it will help us get mentally tougher later in the season."

The Midnight Blue & Gold were unable to secure the doubles point, losing all three matches.

At the top doubles spot, junior Garrett Cona and sophomore Stjepan Sisko fell just short, suffering a 7-6 defeat, while freshman Omar Espinosa and senior Roberto Meza lost a battle 7-5 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

In singles play, the Rockets battled back, winning three singles matchups.

Sisko improved to 3-0 this year in singles play, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at the top singles spot. The defending All-MAC first team selection has yet to lose a set this season.

Senior Nicky Wong and Espinosa also recorded wins in singles play. Wong won 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot, while Espinosa won his first collegiate match, with a 7-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles.

At No. 2 singles, senior Mark Singnil fought back after a first set defeat to tie the match at one set apiece, before losing a close 7-5 battle in the third set.

Cona also extended his singles match to three sets, but could not secure the fourth point of the contest for the Rockets.

Toledo is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 to take on Michigan State in East Lansing.

The following day, the Rockets will host a doubleheader at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Central against Findlay and Ferris State. The matches are scheduled to begin at noon and 4:00 p.m., respectively.


Western Michigan:

Broncos End Road Swing With Loss At No. 53 Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team opened their match on Sunday with a pair of exciting doubles victories, but the Broncos were unable to muster any points in singles in falling 6-1 to the #53 Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 2-3 on the season. They return home for three matches this weekend, including a doubleheader against IPFW and UW-Green Bay on Friday and their 2015 Mid-American Conference opener against Binghamton on Sunday.

The Broncos clinched the doubles point against the Hoosiers thanks to a pair of matches that went to tiebreakers, with WMU’s top two doubles teams managing to eke out wins to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. Stephen Payne and Matt Hamilton were the first to strike against the Hoosiers, defeating Stefan Lugonjic and Chris Essick 7-5 in a tiebreaker to take No. 3 doubles by a 7-6 (5) score. Ruben Greiner and Maik Steiner completed the doubles comeback for the Broncos in the No. 1 slot, beating Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette 7-6 (3) to grant WMU the doubles point.

Singles played out differently, though, with the Hoosiers claiming all six singles matches to take the overall match. Monette opened things at No. 1 singles with a straight-sets win over Steiner, and Sven Lalic made it 2-1 by downing Hamilton at the No. 5 spot. Lugonjic clinched the win for Indiana with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 decision over Jimmy Beckwith at No. 6 singles.
