INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed its first two wins of the season on Saturday at the Butler Bubble.  Akron improved to 2-1 overall with a 6-1 win over host Butler and a 7-0 sweep of Valparaiso.

In the morning doubles action against Butler, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogliev, Belarus) and junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) defeated Konstantina Adami and Kylie Haviland, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. Teammates freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) beat Rachel Sutton and Angelina Qin, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot to claim the doubles point.

In singles action, the Zips won five of six matches against the Bulldogs. Zerbola, Shkundina, freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia), Geier, and freshman Maria Bessmertnaya (Pyatigorsk, Russia) each recorded singles wins.

Against Valparaiso in the evening match, Akron swept every match. At No. 1 doubles, Maksimava and Zerbola won their second match on the day, beating Kaitlyn Hamel and Kathleen Hebble, 6-4. Freshman Kati Mdzinarishvili (Hudson, Ohio) saw her first singles action, defeating Michele Fredlake, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot.

"We saw some good and bad things today, exposing our youth once again, as we continue to develop and grow as a team," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Doubles was very up and down, but we will get back to work on it right away during practice. I was very pleased to see Madison Cohen back on court in singles, and we hope this is a sign of things to come."

Akron travels to Oakland (Mich.) on January 31.

Cardinals Close Match To Wright State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team lost a 4-3 hard fought battle to Wright State Saturday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.  The Cardinals fall to 1-1 overall while Raiders improve to 1-1.

"Wright State out-competed us from start to finish," Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said.  "Credit to them. I think some players on our team are right on the verge of getting big wins, we've just got to keep working."

The Cardinals started the match off down 1-0 after losing the doubles point.  Rosalinda Calderon paired up with Bethany Moore to earn the only victory for Ball State with the twosome's 6-3 defeat over Tori Turner and Aby Madrigal.

In singles action Courntey Wild and Courtney Earnest improved to 2-0 on the season after winning in straight sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions respectively.  At No. 5 singles, Calderon won the first set 7-6(4) but would drop the next set 6-2 to Elaine Cloern.  Calderon would come back in the third set winning by a score of 6-3 to take the match from Wright State.  Unfortunately, Ashlyn Rang, Toni Ormond and Olivia Large each lost their matches in three set thrillers resulting in the victory for the Raiders.

Miller Shines Against Detroit in Dual-Match Opener

Bowling Green State University tennis freshman Megan Miller was a double winner Friday evening (Jan. 23), but the University of Detroit Mercy spoiled the Falcons' dual-match opener, winning by a 6-1 final at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.  Miller teamed with sophomore Harley Hutchison for a decisive doubles win, then came out on top in a back-and-forth singles match.

Five of the six Falcons in the lineup, including Miller, were competing in the first dual match of their respective collegiate careers. Three of those five were suiting up for BGSU for the first time ever, having joined the team earlier in January.

"We had five of the six kids play their first collegiate match, and every single one of those girls left everything they had on the court," said head coach Olga Elkin. "We got a great win at number-one doubles and a fantastic win at number-two singles. I couldn't be more proud of my team. They gave amazing effort, and their attitudes were fantastic."

Miller and Hutchison never trailed in their match at the number-one doubles flight, downing UDM's Sasha Nionova and Valeryia Kulikovskaya by a 6-3 final. The Falcon duo broke a 1-1 tie by winning four consecutive games, and after the Titans cut into that lead, Hutchison finished off the match by blistering a cross-court winner.

In singles play, Miller battled Kulikovskaya into a third-set tiebreaker. The Falcon freshman took a 3-0 lead and was never headed in winning a 6-1 opening set. Then, however, the Titan junior responded by capturing a narrow second set, winning an 8-6 tiebreaker for a 7-6 win in that set. In the last match remaining on the PTC courts, the two competitors went to a 10-point tiebreaker. Miller burst out to a 7-1 lead, then held off Kulikovskaya's attempt at a rally, ultimately winning a 10-8 'breaker.

At the top flight, Hutchison battled Nionova through a close opening set, before Nionova reeled off three-straight games for the win and went on to capture the second set as well.

"Harley and Megan played some very good, aggressive doubles," said Elkin. "And, Harley came out and played a great singles match. She played at the number-six singles position last year, and now she's thrown into our number-one position. She gave great effort, and experiences like this will only help her moving forward.

"It was a fantastic day for Megan. I love watching Megan play. She's tall, she likes to step in and rip the ball. We've been working a lot with her through the fall and here in the last few weeks. She's become a smarter player, and for a freshman in her first match to pull out a 'breaker like she did is fantastic."

The Falcons' lineup from flights three through six included, in order, freshman Emily Witt, sophomores Leeah Floyd and Antonina Farrar and freshman Sydney Seeley. Floyd and Witt teamed up for the Falcons at the second doubles flight, dropping a 6-3 decision, while Farrar and Seeley played at the number-three flight in a 6-2 setback.

"We're taking it one day at a time with the newcomers, but they have been such an amazing addition to the team," said Elkin. "Their attitudes and their effort have been exactly what you would want. Leeah, Syd and Nina all have given us one hundred and ten percent, and we couldn't have been luckier to have them join our team. They've been an amazing addition, and experiences like tonight's dual match will help them – and all of our players – continue to develop and get better."

The Falcons will be back in action at the PTC on Sunday evening (Jan. 25), taking on Youngstown State University in a 5:00 p.m. start.

Eagles Drop Decision To Detroit, 4-3

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team dropped its second dual match in a row to start the 2015 spring campaign. The Eagles (0-2) were knocked off by the University of Detroit Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Chippewa Club.

The Eagles won the doubles point after Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna defeated Nynke Van Der Goot and Anna Davydova, 6-2, at the No. 3-doubles spot, while Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska defeated Valeryia Kulikovskay and Sasha Ninova, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot, earning the doubles point.

EMU however saw the remaining four student-athletes drop their respective singles matches, falling 4-3, to the Titans.

"Detroit has one of its best teams this year and we knew we would have to play well," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We made too many unforced errors and they were tougher in the end to win. We have a lot of work to do to get back on track."

Eastern continues the 2015 campaign Friday, Jan. 30, when it travels to Fort Wayne, Ind. to square off with IPFW at 1 p.m.

Miami:

Miami Beats EKU In Home Opener

HAMILTON, Ohio – In their home opener, Miami University’s women’s tennis team rode a quick sweep of doubles and four two-set singles wins to a 6-1 victory Sunday against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at the Riverside Athletic Club. The result marked head coach Yana S. Carollo’s first regular-season victory in her Miami tenure. The RedHawks (1-1) finished their first weekend of regular competition with a split, following their 6-1 defeat against Indiana on Jan. 25.

In doubles, the #3 pair of junior Ana Rajkovic and freshman Erin Rodriguez made quick work of EKU (0-2)’s Raquel Montalvo Perez and Dominika Hadnadova in a 6-1 match. Following a 6-3 win by the #1 pair of senior Christine Guerrazzi and freshman Nelli Ponomareva, the #2 matchup was declared unfinished and Miami picked up the doubles point.

Ponomareva continued the undefeated start of her Miami career with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Melissa Gerritsen, pushing her current record on the year to 4-0. In fourth flight, senior Ramona Costea defeated Marcela Jimenez, 6-2, 6-3, while Rajkovic took the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-2 result over Montalvo Perez. Freshman Hannah Shteyn picked up her first Miami regular season victory with a brisk 6-1, 6-0 result against Hadnadova.

The most exciting match of the day was Guerrazzi’s second flight against Kristina Labeja. Both sets were defined by long points and tight play, with each heading into a tiebreaker. Eventually, Guerrazzi pulled both out, finishing with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1) victory to finish up the day’s action.

The RedHawks will now head up to Hanover, N.H. next weekend to face Boston University on Saturday Jan. 31 at 12:00 p.m. before taking on the home-standing Dartmouth Big Green on Sunday Feb. 1 at 10:00 a.m. Check MURedHawks for recaps of both matches.

Women's Tennis Falls In Opener At Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Miami University’s women’s tennis commenced its 2015 regular season with an opening match loss, falling 6-1 against the 49th ranked Indiana Hoosiers at the IU Tennis Center. The RedHawks improved on last year’s result against IU by taking one singles match this season.

Following a sweep of the doubles competition, the Hoosiers opened the singles portion with three quick victories and clinched the matchup. Despite the resolution, freshman Nelli Ponomareva concluded a strong regular season debut with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory over Kim Schmider, giving the RedHawks their one point of the day. Junior Ana Rajkovic also played impressively taking Mary Beth King to three sets, eventually falling in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 result.

Northern Illinois:

Youel, De La Torre Record Milestone Wins As Huskies Edge Past Cleveland State;
Youel Ties NIU Career Wins Record; De La Torre Joins 100-Win Club

WESTLAKE, Ohio – Nelle Youel tied the school career combined wins record and Arantza De La Torre became the 12th Huskie women’s tennis player to join the 100 career combined wins club as the Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team defeated Cleveland State 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Paramount Tennis Club outside of Cleveland.

NIU senior Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake) led the way for the Huskies (2-0) by winning her No. 1 singles match in straight sets and picking up a convincing No. 1 doubles victory with Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus). The two victories on Sunday took Youel to 137 career combined wins, bringing her level with Anna Widen’s NIU record total that has stood since 2000.

Another Huskie senior, Arantza De La Torre (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Motolinia), also reached a career milestone as she teamed up with Jennifer Gates (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) to win the No. 3 doubles match that clinched the decisive team point for NIU and became De La Torre’s 100th ever victory as a Huskie, making her the 12th member of the NIU women’s tennis 100-win club.

NIU head coach Tanya Gombera was thrilled to see two of her seniors reach such important milestones on Sunday afternoon.

“Today was a special day for NIU women’s tennis,” Gombera said of Youel and De La Torre’s accomplishments. “Nelle is one of the greatest players to ever play at Northern Illinois and it has been an honor to coach her and see her leadership qualities on the team. And I am proud of Arantza and know she still has more wins in her.”

The first-year Huskie head coach was also especially pleased that the landmark wins helped NIU pick up a hard-fought road victory over Cleveland State.

“I am really proud of the way we competed today. The girls came out for a battle and it was truly a team effort to get the win,” Gombera added.

Tough singles victories in the No. 2 match from Cristina Alvarez and in the No. 3 slot from Mary Malkin also contributed to the team win that improves NIU to 2-0 for the first time since 2013.

The Huskies return to action for their home opener next Saturday at 9 a.m. against Bradley at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill., where Nelle Youel can become the all-time NIU wins leader with a victory of any kind.

Toledo:

Toledo Caps Perfect Weekend With 5-2 Win

CHICAGO, IL - The Toledo women's tennis team won its second-straight match on Saturday, defeating South Dakota State 5-2 in the Windy City.

"We did a great job keeping the momentum going after a big win yesterday," graduate assistant coach James Thorp said. "SDSU played some good doubles and we showed excellent composure coming from behind to dig out the point. I was very impressed by the way we came out in singles. We were able to keep the pressure on and close out the match nicely. This weekend was a great start for our program and we are excited to build on these wins as we head into three big matches next weekend."

The Rockets jumped ahead of the Jackrabbits 1-0 by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Senior Lexy Pitt and junior Emily Mazzola teamed up at the No. 2 doubles spot for a hard fought 7-5 victory after saving three match points.

The junior duo of Mackenzie Bowman and Katelyn Nguyen also won at No. 3 doubles by the score of 6-3.

SDSU tied the match up with a win in the top singles spot, but the Midnight Blue & Gold captured the next four singles points to clinch the victory for Toledo.

Senior Pia Rygh secured a win in No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, while Pitt, sophomore Lauren Thai and Nguyen won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

Pitt, Thai and Nguyen are each now 2-0 following the first two matches this season, while Mazzola and Pitt also hold a 2-0 record in doubles play.

The Rockets will have three matches next weekend, including their home opener on Friday, Jan. 30 against DePaul.

The following day, Toledo will welcome West Virginia to the Glass City. Both home matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

On Sunday, Feb. 1, the Midnight Blue & Gold will hit the road to take on Michigan State to conclude the weekend action.

Rockets Defeat UIC In Opener

CHICAGO, IL - The Toledo women's tennis team edged out Illinois-Chicago on Saturday afternoon by the score of 4-3 in the Windy City.  It was just the second time in program history the Rockets defeated the Flames, with the first victory coming last season.

"This was a great win to get so early in the season," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "This was a match where we had to pay to win and we were able to do that in pressured situations. We are going to take this win to spark the rest of our season."

Sophomore Lauren Thai saved three match points in her matchup at No. 5 singles before claiming a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 win to knot the match up at three apiece.

Junior Katelyn Nguyen clinched the victory for the Midnight Blue & Gold in the No. 4 singles spot with a three-set victory of her own, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The Rockets seized the doubles point as Thai teamed up with senior Pia Rygh in the top doubles spot for a 6-4 victory, and the duo of senior Lexy Pitt and junior Emily Mazzola claimed a 6-1 win in No. 3 doubles.

Toledo began singles play holding a 1-0 lead over the Flames, but UIC bounced back by winning three of the next four points in singles play to take a 3-2 lead.

Mary Beth King took the first singles match of the day to make it 2-0, and Paula Guiterrez defeated Barbare Eristavi in No. 3 singles to make it a 3-0 match advantage.
