Toledo:

Rockets Swept By Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team could not get anything going on Saturday, as the Rockets were swept by No. 5 Ohio State.

"We hung around quite well in some of our singles matches, so that was a positive sign," head coach Al Wermer said. "But we've got a lot of things we need to work on."

The Rockets were outmatched by the nationally ranked Buckeyes, falling in two of three doubles matchups and three singles matches to complete the sweep.

In the top singles spot, sophomore Stjepan Sisko put up a fight on No. 21 Chris Diaz, as the two were tied at six apiece, as the match went unfinished.

Sisko also teamed up with junior Garrett Cona in the top doubles spot as the duo faced off against the No. 4 doubles team in the country, but fell by the score of 6-3.

The Midnight Blue & Gold is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 for a road match at Xavier, then will face Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 30 in East Lansing.

The Rockets then start a five-match home stint beginning with a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 1 against Findlay and Ferris State. The first match is scheduled to begin at noon at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

Men's Tennis Suffers Setback In Home Opener

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team fell in its home opener on Saturday to Horizon League member Valparaiso by the score of 5-2 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

"Having a tough loss after winning the doubles point exposed out team to the things that we have to continue working on as we enter a stretch with six important matches," head coach Al Wermer said.

Junior Garrett Cona and sophomore Stjepan Sisko earned a hard-fought 7-6 victory in the top doubles spot, while freshman Omar Espinosa and senior Roberto Meza recorded a 6-4 win in No. 3 doubles as the Rockets claimed the first point of the match.

The duo of Cona and Sisko are now 2-0 this season in No. 1 doubles.

Sisko also earned a victory in the top singles spot, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, and winning his second singles match of the year.

The Midnight Blue & Gold were unable to produce another win in singles action, as the Crusaders swept No. 2 - No. 6 singles to clinch the 5-2 victory.

Senior Nicky Wong lost in a tough three-set match, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5, after bouncing back from a loss in the first frame and forcing a deciding third set.

Western Michigan:

Broncos Fall 6-1 To Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team pushed three matches to three sets in singles play, but the Broncos were unable to take down a Big Ten opponent on the road in falling 6-1 to the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Sunday. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 2-2 on the season.

Ruben Greiner picked up his second singles win of the season with an impressive straight-sets effort against Josh Silverstein in the No. 4 singles match, winning both sets in relatively quick order to keep the Broncos alive in the overall match. Greiner blew past Silverstein 6-2 in the first set and held on for a tight finish in the second set, winning 6-4 to make the overall match 3-1 and breathe life into the Broncos. The remaining three singles matches all went down to the wire, with the Nos. 6, 5, and 1 singles matches going to three sets.
