Chicago, Illinois – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team broke into the winning column for the first time in 2014 in a big way on Sunday night, as the Falcons exploded with four goals in both the first and the second half of play to dominate the Cougars of Chicago State at Kroc Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.
The Falcons had five players notch their first career goals in the win, while senior Sidney Huth had a career night with two goals and two assists as four different players recorded both a goal and an assist in the blowout win.
The win is the first of the season for the Falcons and is the first victory for BGSU under head coach Lindsay Basalyga.
"This win has been a long time coming and I'm happy that the players can finally "feel" the reward for their hard work and discipline," stated Coach Basalyga. "We scored some great goals tonight and the defense walked away with a shutout. We will enjoy this win a bit longer than normal and will definitely come into training Tuesday with a stronger sense of belief."
"It is a great feeling to get a win because we have been working so hard all year. I can't even explain the feeling that we have right now," commented redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Cadel, who had the shutout win. "We came out strong to start the match and continued to battle for the entire time. It was great to call the seniors from last year and share this with them because we wouldn't be here where we are tonight without them and they are part of the process. It was important for us that we call them and I think they appreciated it."
BGSU's last win came back on Aug. 26, 2012, when BGSU defeated IUPUI 2-1 at Cochrane Stadium. The win on Sunday night is also the first road win for the Falcons since Bowling Green beat Buffalo 2-1 at Buffalo on Sept. 23, 2011.
The 8-0 win marks the largest margin of victory for the Falcons on the pitch since BGSU overwhelmed Youngstown State by nine goals in a 10-1 win back on Oct. 3, 2001.
The win over IUPUI in 2012 was also the last time the Falcons scored multiple goals in a contest prior to the eight goals scored tonight at Chicago State.
BGSU pounced on the Cougars from the opening touch, as freshman midfielder Madison Schupbach put not one, but two shots on frame in the opening minutes of play before the Falcons' Jessica Creech scored the first goal for the Orange and Brown in the 11th minute off an assist from freshman Leah Runkle. The goal is the Creech's first at BGSU.
The Falcons continued to fire at will, as newcomer Jennifer Reyes notched her first career goal off a Huth assist in the 36th minute to put Bowling Green up 2-0, while Huth added her own goal less than 20 seconds later with a helper from sophomore Paige Amodio to put the Falcons in front big at 3-0.
The trend continued three minutes later in the 39th minute, as this time Amodio recorded her first career goal as a Falcon off an assist from Huth to give the visitors in orange a 4-0 lead in the first half.
The halftime intermission did nothing to slow down the Falcons, as Huth quickly registered her second goal of the game and on the year in the 51st minute by way of an assist from Alexa Cheripko to put BGSU in front 5-0.
Following a Skylar Fleak goal just a minute later, the second of the season for the freshman, fellow newcomer Kara Ross, who picked up the assist on the previous Fleak goal, tallied her first career goal as a Falcon in the 77th minute as the rout was on.
Freshman defender Rachel Winters added an eighth goal in the 88th minute for her first career goal as a Falcon to complete the scoring barrage and the game at 8-0.
Cadel picked up the shutout win, as she stopped five Chicago State shots, including four attempts in the second half.
BGSU outshot the Cougars 41-8 for the match and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks on the night, as the Falcons dominated the ball throughout most of the contest.
The four first half goals marks the 11th time in the program's history that a team has scored four goals in a single half, while the four second half goals was the 12th time.
The eight total goals is the most goals in a game for the Falcons since the 2008 team scored seven times in a 7-0 rout of Tennessee Tech at home on Sept. 12, 2008, while the eight goals is the third most in a single game for the Falcons in the program's history, only behind a 10 goal performance versus Youngstown State in 2001 and a nine goal showing versus Robert Morris in 1998.
The Falcons now have 10 goals over the first five matches on the year, surpassing its total season output of nine goals in both the 2013 and 2012 seasons.
Bowling Green (1-4-0) will return home in exactly one week to host Detroit on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to five games on Sunday night at Niagara as they defeated the Purple Eagles by the score of 2-0. With the win, UB moves to 4-0-1 on the season, their best start to a season since the 2008 campaign.
"After a disappointing and flat first half, I am really proud of the way the girls responded with another great team effort in the second half," said first-year head coach Shawn Burke. "The girls really responded in the second half and put their mark on the game."
The Bulls picked up the game-winning goal on a perfectly executed free kick that started with a Sophie Therien cross into the box where Jackie Hall beat the goalkeeper to the left corner of the net in the 61st minute of action. Kassidy Kidd made a great play on the right of the goal to give UB the free kick.
After a collision that sent starting keeper Laura Dougall to the bench, the Bulls offense took matters into their own hands and increased the lead to 2-0 in the 76th minute. Megan Giesen took the ball at midfield and sent a perfect outlet pass to Celina Carrero to get her in free on the Niagara goal. Carrero didn't waste the great opportunity as she beat the NU goalkeeper with a blast of a shot to the right corner.
As the sixth minute of play hit, the Bulls set a program record for the longest shutout streak to start a season at 385 minutes. The old record was held by the 2008 squad that started the season 4-0-1 and had a shutout streak of 384 minutes.
Both teams played tight defense early on in the game as the first shot of the game didn't come until the 15th minute as Dougall was asked to make a save on a Purple Eagle shot. In the 22nd minute, Andrea Niper had a great chance to open the scoring for UB but her shot went just wide from in tight on the right side of the box. Angel Hart sent a perfect cross into Niper but her attempt missed the right corner of the net.
In the 39th minute it appeared that Hall had given the Bulls the 1-0 lead but her diving header goal was called back due to an offsides call. Hart crossed the ball into the box where Hall dove and scored but it was determined she was offsides on the play.
The two teams entered halftime with the Bulls holding the 4-2 first half advantage in shots and 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
UB held most of the pressure during the second half of play as they had the 6-2 advantage in shots for the final 45 minutes. Carrero was the most dangerous player on the field in the second half as she recorded a goal and created many other opportunities. Kidd and Niper also had strong second half efforts that will not show up on the score sheet for UB.
Following Dougall's exit in the second half and the entrance of an emergency goalkeeper for the Bulls, the defense of UB really locked down and didn't allow Niagara any good chances. The defensive group of Therien, Hall, Hart and Kristin Markiewicz only allowed one shot on Ashley Evans as they secured their fourth win of the season.
For the game, Niper led all players with four shots while six other Bulls recorded one shot. Dougall made one save in just over 75 minutes of action as she collected her fourth win and fifth shutout. Evans made one save in just over 14 minutes of emergency action between the pipes for UB.
The Bulls have not allowed a goal in 470 minutes of action so far this season, the second longest streak in program history. The Bulls defeated all three Big Four Rivals for the first time since the 2000 season.
Following the match, Hall was awarded the "Player of the Match" award by the UB coaching staff after a great game both defensively and offensively, notching her first career game-winning goal in the process.
When asked about Hall's performance on Sunday night, Coach Burke said "Jackie's efforts on both ends of the field were contagious tonight and helped seal the win for us."

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The long weekend finally came to an end for the Central Michigan women's soccer team. The Chippewas defeated Oakland at home on Friday, then traveled to Ann Arbor on Sunday, competing against Michigan.
Although Michigan wasn't the best result for CMU, coach Peter McGahey said, "I thought the team put out a good, gritty, hard disciplined performance tonight."
The Chippewas lost to the Michigan, 3-0, ending CMU's unbeaten streak at two games. The Chippewas are 1-3-1. Michigan, which was ranked 10th last week before back-to-back loss to San Diego and then San Diego State, is 4-2.
"We started off really well" McGahey said, also pointing out that it's difficult when the opponent punches two in back to back. "That really turns the tide, and basically at that point on we were chasing the game."
With an overall five shots from CMU, Michigan stepped in with 14 fired on the net. U-M had five corner kicks to CMU's two.
Ani Sarkisian, Nicky Waldeck and Jessica Heifetz scored for the Wolverines (4-2), and Megan Hinz earned the win goal.
Sarkisian scored 11 minutes into the game. Less than two minutes later, Waldeck scored off a Sarkisian assist to make it 2-0. Heifetz's insurance goal came with under 10 minutes remaining in the match.
CMU sophomore goalie Maddy Bunnell felt pressure all night. She had five saves in the first half and two more in the second.
Two more players to recognize were senior Laura Gosse and freshmen McKay Matheson. Gosse had two shots on goal in 58 minutes on the field. Matheson ran the field for 80 minutes and had one shot on goal.
"Overall as a team performance, it was good team effort," McGahey said, adding that the Chippewas still have work to do. "Lots to build on from today. Consistency is key."
McGahey and his team will prepare for a trip to Colorado by doing what they usually do, by getting right back to training. The Chippewas are scheduled to play Air Force (1-3) on Friday, Sept. 12, and Colorado College (2-1-2) on Sunday, Sept. 14.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team made sure to leave the state of Oregon unbeaten as the Eagles shut out the Oregon State University Beavers 1-0 Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7, at Lorenz Field. Megan Trapp's goal in the ninth minute was all Eastern would need, and Megan McCabe secured her third shutout of the season.
For the third straight game, the Eagles (3-2-1) scored first as Madison Hirsch found Trapp for an early score. The Green and White controlled the contest throughout the 90 minutes with McCabe (3-1-1) only having to stop just one OSU (0-4-2) shot on goal to notch the eighth shutout of her career. Oregon State took 13 shots, but the Eagles attempted 15 of their own, including eight on target. The EMU attack kept OSU goalkeeper Bella Geist (0-2-2) busy all afternoon as she made six saves, while allowing the game's only goal.
Angela Vultaggio fired a team-high five shots, Molli Krick added four attempts, and Trapp landed all three of her shots on target. While the Eastern forwards and midfielders took care of the ball on the offensive side of the pitch, the back line stood tall in front of McCabe to help claim the shutout victory. Defenders Emily Dzik, Hallee Kansman and Marisa Kozikowski played the entire game, while Julia Lombardi also started for the EMU defense, seeing 70 minutes.
Eastern found the open net early, scoring before the 10-minute mark for the second time in the past three matches. In fifth minute, Vultaggio tried to put the Eagles on the board but was denied by Geist. Chelsie Oddan followed with a shot of her own only to see the OSU keeper make the save. However, the third time proved to be a charm as Trapp struck for a goal in the ninth minute. Hirsch dribbled into the attacking third before playing a ball in to her teammate from 18 yards out. Trapp did the rest, finding the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Looking for the equalizer, the Beavers fired off seven of the game's next eight shots. Only one of the attempts landed on goal, and it safely found the hands of McCabe. After surviving the onslaught of shots, EMU made sure to limit scoring chances for Oregon State by not allowing the Beavers to take attempt a shot for the final 17 minutes of the opening half.
While Oregon State out-shot Eastern 8-6 in the first half, the Eagles held the advantage in the second half, 9-5. Eastern rocketed four of its nine shots on goal, trying to get an insurance score. Within 55 seconds of play, Trapp had two chances to tally her second goal of the game; nonetheless, the pair of shots on target was stopped as the clock ticked under five minutes remaining. Even though they were unsuccessful in recording a second-half goal, the Eagles' aggressive play on offense kept OSU on its heels and prevented the home squad from tying the game.
With one-third of their regular season in the books, the Eagles will take an extended break from facing any opponents on the pitch. EMU will have 14 days in between contests as Coach Scott Hall and his squad travel to the Windy City, Sept. 21, for the final non-conference contest of the season. The University of Illinois-Chicago, playing its inaugural women's soccer season, will host the Eagles with the action beginning at 1 p.m. CST from Flames Field.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Goals in the first and second half propelled the Miami University women’s soccer team to a 2-1 triumph at Louisville on Sunday afternoon. The win lifted the RedHawks to 3-1 on the season, while the Cardinals dropped to 2-2.
Miami struck first as freshman midfielder Amy Malone scored her first collegiate goal after a scramble in the box on a senior midfielder Kelsey Dinges corner kick at the 39:10 mark. It was the only goal of the first half for either team as the RedHawks carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
Just over four minutes into the second half, Louisville evened the tally at one goal apiece when Lexie Nieboda scored at the 49:22 mark. Miami quickly fired back to reclaim the lead when Dinges scored her first goal of the season, a game-winner, off a junior forward Haley Walter assist in the 56th minute to hand Miami a 2-1 lead.
“I’m really proud of our kids and pleased for them,” said Miami head coach Bobby Kramig. “It’s been a tough two weeks of practices. We pushed them hard physically and asked a lot of them. They worked hard and really responded positively to that. Today is a great reward for all of the hard work they’ve been putting in. I really liked their attitude and approach to the game. The team did a great job of stepping up and executing the game plan. We asked them to play aggressively, play forward and get after Louisville a bit, and they did that. I couldn’t be more pleased and proud of them.”
Senior goalkeeper Danielle Wiseman picked up her third win of the season, recording one save in the winning effort.
After playing four straight matches on the road to start the season, Miami returns to Oxford for a seven-match home stretch beginning with a 1 p.m. contest with IPFW at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women’s soccer team dropped its first game of the season, a hard-fought loss at Michigan State, 3-2, in double-overtime on Sunday afternoon.
Allyson Krause netted the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute at 101:23 for the Spartans with assists from Paige Wester and Sarah Kovan. The Broncos (4-1-0) picked up goals from Maria Jaramillo and Rachel Chaney, but were outshot 24-10 in the game. Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Collin (2-1-0) made a career-high seven saves on the afternoon.
“Despite the loss I am really proud of the effort they gave today,” said head coach Nate Norman. “We played a very good opponent and fought back after going down. We showed great character in the way we responded in the second half.”
Western Michigan took an early 1-0 lead on Jaramillo’s first collegiate goal in the 32nd minute. Freshman Emma Kahn played her classmate through behind the MSU back line and Jaramillo finished into the corner from eight yards out.
Michigan State tied it up just 10 minutes later on a penalty kick by Mary-Kate Fiebernitz. A Bronco defender was whistled for a hand ball inside the box on a Spartan shot and Fiebernitz wrapped it up with her third goal of the season.
The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute on a goal by Jamie Cheslik from Jessica Kjellstrom and Morgan McKerchie.
The Broncos countered in the 84th minute on Chaney’s first of the season. The senior midfielder fought off her mark in the box and played a cross from Aubrey Sudomier into the corner of the net.
“At the end of the day Michigan State created enough chances to win and I have great respect for them to be able to do that against our back line,” Norman added.
The Spartans ended WMU’s shutout streak at four games.
The Broncos are off on Friday but host Illinois-Chicago on Sunday at noon.
