AKRON, Ohio - Despite an early second half deficit, the University of Akron women's soccer team scored three straight goals against St. Bonaventure on Friday to claim victory, 3-1.
While the Bonnies outshot the Zips 6-3 in the first half, a majority of the action happened in the middle third of the field as the struggle for possession went on for nearly the entire half.
St. Bonaventure (2-3) came out swinging in the second, as Lauren Hill took a cross in the middle of the box from Jennifer Morris and netted it to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
It didn't take long for Akron (2-3) to answer, as junior Hannah Werth booted a laser shot from the top right side of the box beyond the reach of St. Bonaventure goalie Beth Moore and scored the equalizer for the Zips in the 65th minute.
With four corner kicks and an abundance of opportunities early on by way of crosses from freshman Loreana Lonigro, Akron finally connected on one in the 73rd minute. Fading down the right sideline with possession, Lonigro relayed the ball to the top of the box where freshman Amy Dean turned and nailed the go-ahead goal for the Zips from long range.
Both Werth and Dean scored their first goals of the 2014. Werth scored the only other goal of her college career in 2012 against VCU while Dean, playing in only her second game of 2014, scored the first of her career.
UA wasn't finished just yet, as the team took three more shots in the next four minutes and would connect once more in the 86th minute. Sophomore Sarah Sivic, who scored the Zips lone goal this past week in a 3-1 loss at Cleveland State, headed a ball in the box off of a long pass from the right side by Lonigro that bounced pass Moore for the third Akron goal of the match.
The Zips last three-goal match came against North Dakota last August in a matching 3-1 victory in which junior Megan Waskowski netted a hat trick for Akron. The last time three individuals scored in a single match for the Zips was back in August of 2012 when Akron took down Morehead State, 3-2. Waskowski had the first of three Zips goals in that contest.
Lonigro tallied her second and third assists of the season and her career, as she also took three of the four UA corner kicks in the second half.
Senior Alex Luevano-Harden made four saves in goal, playing all 90 minutes for Akron.
The Zips take back to the road next weekend as they travel to New England to take on Boston U. (Sept. 12) and Bryant (Sept. 14). They return back to FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field for their final non-conference matchup of the regular season on Fri., Sept. 19 when they host Youngstown State.
Bowling Green
Box Score
Bowling Green, Ohio – Freshman forward Skylar Fleak scored her first career goal as Bowling Green State University fell to the Cleveland State University Vikings 2-1 in a lightning shortened contest on Friday night on a very humid night at Cochrane Stadium. The match was halted with 58 seconds remaining in the second half due to lightning and then ultimately called at 9:30 p.m., approximately 40 minutes after the stop of the match.
The loss drops the Falcons to 0-4-0 overall, while Cleveland State moves to 3-3-0 overall with the win.
"This was the best 90 minutes or 89 minutes of soccer we've played to date," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "I'm so proud of the level that the players chose to play at tonight. We had a few moments where we switched off and unfortunately in our process and where we are in our process we can't switch off because we can't rely on coming back. And that is what I told the team."
The Falcons set the tone of the game early, as BGSU freshman Mikayla Couch registered the first shot of the match less than two minutes into the contest, as she dribbled from right to left towards the middle of the field and took a shot from 25 yards out that was caught by the Vikings' goalkeeper Sarah Wood.
The shot was the first of five for the Falcons in the first 25 minutes of play, as BGSU outshot Cleveland State 5-2 during that span. The Orange and Brown picked up shots from Madison Schupbach in the fourth minute, Sarah Quimby in the ninth minute, Leah Runkle in the 11th minute and Schupbach again in the 19th minute, yet couldn't put an attempt on frame.
During that span, redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Cadel watched one Cleveland State shot sail high over the net in the sixth minute and then made her first save of the game in the 18th minute on a shot from 28 yards out by the Vikings Katie Bainbridge.
Following another Cadel save in the 29th minute, the Falcons countered with a shot from Fleak that flew over the outstretched hands of CSU's Wood to put the home team on top 1-0. Fellow freshmen teammates Schupbach and Runkle were able to work together to play the ball to Fleak in the middle of the field who made good on a laser into the top half of the goal for her first career goal as a Falcon.
However, just three minutes later, the visiting Vikings found the equalizer off the foot of Sarah Kaiser from the left side of the box to tie the match up at 1-1 in the 33rd minute.
Each team would put one more shot on frame over the final 12 minutes of the first half, yet both goalkeepers were up for the challenge to keep the match knotted up at 1-1 at the halftime break.
The second half started out much like the first, as the Falcons' Haley Parkinson had a shot hauled in by Wood in the center of the goal in the 48th minute, which was followed by another shot attempt from Schupbach which went wide of the frame in the 53rd minute.
The two teams then traded shots with Cadel making a save first for Bowling Green in the 56th minute, followed by another stop by CSU's Wood in the 56th minute, before Cadel made back-to-back stops on two shot attempts from the Vikings in the 58th minute to keep the match tied at 1-1.
After another Cadel save in the 65th minute on a header off a cross into the box, the Vikings finally got one past the BGSU keeper one minute later as Chloe Fadenholz dribbled down the left side of the field, then cut towards the middle and hit a shot just out of the reach of a leaping Cadel that hit the bottom of the cross bar and bounced into the side of the goal in the 66th minute to put the visitors in front 2-1.
Despite following behind 2-1 and lightning looming in the distance, the Falcons refused to quit as BGSU got shots from Kara Ross and Fleak over the next nine minutes of play to keep the Vikings' defense on their heels.
Fleak looked to tie the match once more in the 76th minute as the freshman chased down a long ball along the right sideline. She flicked the ball to herself, cut back behind the passing defender and lined up a left-footed shot that was on target put sailed into the arms of CSU's Wood in goal.
Ross would put not one, but two headers online off of a Jessica Creech free kick in the 78th minute and a Rachel Winters corner kick into the box in the 80th minute, only to see each sail just high of the cross bar and out of play.
Bowling Green recorded three more shots over the next nine minutes of play, including a shot from Schupbach just over 20 yards out that was on frame in the 87th minute, before the match was halted due to lightning in the area with 58 seconds to go in the contest.
After a 40 minute delay, the match was called.
Cadel suffered the loss despite tallying 10 saves over 89 minutes of play. Her 10 saves marks the seventh time in her young career that she has posted double digit saves in a game for the Falcons.
Wood earned her third straight win in goal for CSU, as she tallied six saves in her 89 minutes of play.
BGSU outshot the Vikings 19-16 for the match, as Schupbach and Fleak had five and four shots apiece to lead the Falcons.
Both Runkle and Schupbach each recorded their first career assist in the contest.
Bowling Green (0-4-0) will return to the road to take on the Cougars of Chicago State on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) at Kroc Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Out of the muggy weather at the CMU Soccer Complex, the Chippewas walked away with their first win of the season. Popping off their home opener against Oakland, the women managed to start their first home game clutching a victory.
With a 2-1 final score, the Chippewas were able to maintain control of the game, improving to 1-2-1.
Senior Laura Gosse was the outstanding player, scoring both CMU goals. She caught fire early on in the half and carried it over through the second as well.
Her first goal developed from a broken defensive play 12 yards out, in Oakland's goalie box. Her second came in the second half with 23 minutes left off an amazing assist from Emily Basten for a one-on-one fast break against Oakland's keeper.
Landing the shot in the lower left corner, Gosse put CMU ahead with a comfortable 2-0 lead in the second half. Three minutes later, Kyla Kellerman answered for Oakland, altering the scoreboard to 2-1.
"I felt good," Gosse said. "I think that the team chemistry worked out really well tonight. I think we are rolling, I feel like we're meshing really well.
"We all have our own way of preparing and I think hydration is one of the key things especially with how hot it's been."
The two goals matched CMU's season output, and the win came on the heels of a scoreless tie Sunday at Detroit.
"Last game we finally started connecting all the time, we really connected up top and that just followed into this game," said CMU mid Eliza Van de Kerkhove, a key contributor who helped the Chippewas control the ball and create scoring opportunities.
"It feels good to play at home and to get the first one at the home opener," coach Peter McGahey said.
Discussing the team's offensive composure in the game, he indicated that they were proud of the progression the women have made.
"Our rhythm in our attack was very good; in finding different channels and finding ways to score goals and create chances," he said.
The Grizzles appeared to carry the play early, keeping the pressure up in CMU's end. The Chippewas defense remained strong, and eventually took command.
CMU goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell made two saves as Oakland held a 13-9 advantage in shots. The Chippewas had six corner kicks to Oakland's four.
The Chippewas don't have a lot of time to savor the win as they head to Ann Arbor, Mich., to battle Michigan (2-2) on Sunday, Sept. 7.
McGahey said he hopes he won't have to tell his players much, when asking what he plans to immediately prepare them for another challenging match.
"The maturity that the team showed to put a good performance out tonight basically earns us the opportunity to go into Michigan with momentum," he said.

EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team started its West Coast weekend road trip with a 1-1 draw against the University of Oregon, Sept. 7, at Pape´ Field. The Friday night standstill was the first draw of the 2014 regular season for both the Eagles (2-2-1) and the Ducks (3-1-1) as Oregon saw its three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Green and White.
The senior duo of Bianca Rossi and Marisa Kozikowski put the Eagles on the scoreboard midway through the first half. Kozikowski found the head of Rossi on a cross in the box, giving EMU the one-goal advantage and ending Oregon's streak of consecutive shutouts at three games. In goal, Megan McCabe (2-1-1) put together a strong performance, making a season-high nine saves.
Oregon held advantages in shots, 18-8, as well as corner kicks, 5-2. Marlo Sweatman brought the Ducks back in the contest with a second-half goal courtesy of an assist from Kira Wagoner. After allowing the Eastern goal in the opening half, Oregon goalkeeper Abby Steele (3-1-1) stopped all three shots on goal that the Eagles took throughout the remaining 65 minutes of play.
Eastern wasted no time in starting the game on the attack as Megan Trapp threw a header just high over the net, 47 seconds into the contest. The script quickly flipped minutes later as the Ducks took three consecutive shots with the last saved by McCabe. After stopping the game's first shot on-goal, EMU found the open net on the opposite side of the turf. In the 25th minute, Kozikowski sent a beautiful cross into Rossi, who re-directed the ball with her head into the back of the net. The goal was Rossi's first of the 2014 campaign, and Kozikowski also collected her first assist of the season.
The hometown Ducks pressed throughout the remainder of the first half to try and tie the contest. With three corner kicks, Oregon had opportunities on set pieces, but the EMU back line stood tall in front of McCabe. After the first 45 minutes of play, the Eagles found themselves ahead, 1-0. McCabe made four saves in the opening half as Oregon sent seven shots her way. While Eastern only attempted four shots, the lone shot on goal from Rossi found the opening for the half's only score.
McCabe continued her strong play to start the second half. The junior keeper came off her line to win an important ball that denied Oregon a prime scoring opportunity. With this aggressive play, McCabe started a counterattack for the Green and White, moving the ball quickly up the pitch. Trapp found Rossi in the middle, but the senior was denied her second goal of the contest as Steele made the stop.
Keeping up the attack, the Ducks finally found the equalizer in the 75th minute. Similar to the EMU goal, Wagoner sent a cross that connected with the head of Sweatman. As McCabe dove left to cover the easier angle, the Oregon midfielder placed her header to the opposite side as the ball rolled into the net to knot the contest at one goal apiece.
Two minutes after Oregon tied the game, the Eagles nearly regained the lead as Angela Vultaggio had a one-on-one opportunity after getting past a defender. With Steele racing up to the top of the box to take away any openings, Vultaggio slowed down the pace in an attempt to throw off the Ducks' keeper. However, Steele managed to block the shot to deny the senior Eagle and keep the match at a standstill.
In both overtime periods, neither team had a golden opportunity to score the game-winner. McCabe made a pair of saves as both defenses played strong to force the 1-1 draw.
The Eagles will remain in Oregon for the remainder of the weekend, playing its second contest in the Beaver State. Wrapping up the excursion, Eastern takes on Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., Sept. 7. First touch from Lorenz Field is set for 1 p.m. PDT.
Northern Illinois
Box Score
DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team notched its first victory of the season on Friday night, defeating the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks 1-0 at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
A first-half goal from the penalty spot by senior midfielder Allie McBride(Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was enough to see the Huskies (1-4) prevail over UNO (1-3) in their home opener on a rainy night in DeKalb.
NIU head coach John Ross was pleased with the victory and credited the Huskies’ hard work in practice for earning a hard-fought victory.
“I’m really happy for our kids. They’ve been working really hard since preseason, so to get the result here was great and all of their hard work has paid off,” Ross said. “We have to keep that same mentality going forward: hard work will get it done.”
The Huskies survived a scare in the first minute when a loose ball in their box almost led to an easy Maverick goal, but they soon took control of the match.
With junior forward Nicole Gobbo (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) making way on the right wing and creating several chances, NIU pinned UNO in their own half for much of the first period.
The pressure finally paid off when freshman forward Sammy O’Brien (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) made a lengthy run down the left channel that culminated in a Maverick defender pushing her over, giving the Huskies their first penalty kick of the season. McBride calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
“It feels really good,” McBride said after the game. “We knew that if we came together as a team that we could win these kinds of game, so we’re all really happy with the performance and the victory.”
That goal proved to be enough for NIU as the Mavericks rarely threatened to equalize in a game of few scoring chances.
However, NIU freshman goalkeeper Amy Annala(Oswego, Ill./Oswego) was required to make five total saves, with her best stop coming in the 88th minute to preserve the Huskie victory and her first career shutout.
“It’s great to get my first shutout, but the most important thing was that we won the game,” Annala said. “Now we’re all focused on building on this and improving going forward.”
The Huskies return to action next Friday when they face Chicago State in Naperville at the Nike Sports Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
“We have a couple kids from that Naperville area, so it will be nice for them to play close to their friends and family,” Ross said. “We want to engage the west Chicago suburbs community and believe we’ll have great support on Friday.”

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University women's soccer team fell 3-2 in the second overtime to Xavier at Chessa Field on Friday evening.
Xavier's Catherine Allon scored the game-winner in the 109th minute from the center of the box.
Ohio held the lead two separate times in the game. The first was when they scored off of their second corner kick opportunity, as redshirt sophomore Carly Manso swung in the ball from the right side and found the head of senior Annie Beard to put Ohio up 1-0 in the 21st minute. The goal was Beard's first in her Ohio career.
Xavier (2-3-0) responded just a minute later with a goal of its own as freshman Kenadie Carlson found space down the left side and ripped a shot off the post that landed perfectly for sophomore Tori Doss to finish off and tie the game 1-1.
The Bobcats struck first in the second half as well, when Manso gave Ohio a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute with a curling shot from the left side of the box. The goal was Manso's first of the season.
Xavier came back once again and equalized in the 82nd minute with a long shot from Doss that curled over the head of senior Nicole Amari. Despite a late barrage of Ohio corners, the game went to overtime, where Xavier eventually found the game winner.
Ohio came close in the first half on two separate corner attempts. Sophomore Sasha Haverchak put her shot just over the bar on one. Another corner late in the half resulted in a shot on goal from Beard and another shot on the deflection from senior Liz Finley. Both attempts were saved by the Musketeers' goalie.
The Bobcats finished with 16 corner kicks and 17 total shots. Junior Leah Sandercock registered six shots.
Ohio (1-4-0) returns to action Sunday, Sept. 7 when they host Eastern Kentucky at Chessa Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Box Score
ANN ARBOR, MI - The Rockets sustained a 4-0 setback at Michigan on Friday night. With the loss, Toledo drops to 3-2-1 on the season while the Wolverines improve to 3-2-0.
The match caps off a four games in seven days stretch for UT in which the Rockets finished with a 2-1-1 record.
The game in Ann Arbor was delayed on two different occasions because of inclement weather. The first delay came in the sixth minute of play but the Wolverines jumped out of the gate on the restart.
Michigan’s Nicky Waldeck beat junior UT keeper Sam Tiongson to a loose ball and fired a 20-yard shot at an open net to tally the first goal of the game.
The game was delayed yet again just a minute after the Waldeck goal but the stoppage did not cool off the Michigan attack.
UM struck again in the 35th minute as Madison Lewis tallied her second goal of the season.
The second half was more of the same for the Rockets as they gave up another pair of scores.
Waldeck netted her second score of the game in the 59th minute before Corinne Harris capped off the game with her first goal of the season in the 65th minute.
Toledo managed just two second-half shots against the Michigan defense and six overall. The Wolverines totaled 19 shots including 13 in the first half.

CHICAGO -- Freshman forward Emma Kahn came off the bench and netted the game-winning goal with just four minutes left as the Western Michigan women’s soccer team improved to a program-best 4-0-0 after defeating Loyola Chicago, 1-0, on Friday evening.
Late in the 85th minute sophomore Olivia Vollmers crossed the ball into the box. It went through a crowd of players to Kahn, who took a preparation touch and then fired it into the net from six yards out. The goal was her third of the season, her second game-winner and also third goal off the bench. Vollmers tallied her second assist of the season on the goal.
“Loyola is a very good team and they presented a different challenge today than we have had so far this season,” said head coach Nate Norman. “They are very athletic and play very hard. I thought we handled their pressure pretty well throughout the game.”
“We created some good chances during the game but they were difficult to break down in the back. Emma scored another great goal for the game-winner after a great cross from Olivia.”
The Broncos outshot the Ramblers 13-4 overall and 5-3 in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Herber made three saves to earn her second win and second shutout of the season. Overall this season WMU has not allowed a goal in 378:03 of soccer.
