Akron 3, Bryant 2

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - In their second of two contests in New England this weekend, the Akron women's soccer team defeated Bryant 3-2 in a contest that went into two overtime periods before the Zips secured the win.

Junior Sydney Blomquist got Akron on the board early, as senior Karina Atkinson fed her a through ball from about 45 yards out that Blomquist was able take all the way as she beat her defender and net the Zips a goal with a shot to the left side, putting UA up 1-0 in the 15th minute.

The Bulldogs tied it up rather quickly, crossing the ball from the right side to score the equalizer in the 25th.

"We showed very early on, having heavy legs from the double overtime game on Friday night, we were sluggish, stepping slow to the ball at first," noted head coach Vernon Croft. "With that being said, we competed extremely well. We knew it was going to be a mentality game, it had to come from within. One of those "Were we going to be able to embrace the grind and gut it out?" kind of games."

After a series of substitutions from both squads, freshman Amy Dean took a corner kick off of the foot of freshman Loreana Lonigro and put it in goal, pushing the Zips back up to a 2-1 lead. The combination of Dean and Lonigro also scored the go-ahead goal off of a set piece in the first half of Akron's 3-1 victory over St. Bonaventure at home back on Sept. 5.

Bryant came out strong in the second half as Sarah Shucker once again tied it up with a shot from 30 yards out, evening the score at 2-2 as the teams eventually worked into overtime.

Though the Zips were outshot 4-1 in two overtime periods, it was Atkinson who made a cross into the box in the 108th minute that bobbled around a sea of players in the box and eventually bounced into the back of the net, giving Akron the golden goal and sealing their victory at Bulldog Stadium, 3-2.

"Next step for us is to be able to continue doing the little things well," said Croft. "You couldn't have asked for a better weekend result. You take a 38th ranked Boston [University] to overtime and come out of it with a point and then Sunday you're able to respond and finish the weekend with three points."

Junior goalkeeper Klaire Adee played all 107 minutes and 15 seconds for the Zips, making five saves in her second win in net this season.

"Concerted team effort. We needed every minute that everybody gave us," Croft added.

Akron returns home for a bout with Youngstown State this Friday (Sept. 19) before hitting the road again next week to begin conference play at Ohio (Sept. 26) and Kent State (Sept. 28).

Ball State 1, Navy 1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Ball State soccer team closed out the Navy Invitational with a 1-1 draw Sunday against the host school at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Kalynn Flanagan scored the goal for Ball State, which earned a win and a draw in its weekend trip to move to 3-1-2 on the season.  Navy, now 3-2-3, is unbeaten in its past six games. Last week, the Mids took down 24th-ranked James Madison.

"I'm very pleased with how we played against a good team that has beaten some high quality opponents," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "Our girls were consistent with executing the game plan we put forward. We had several chances to close out a win, but I'm proud of our performance."

Both goals Sunday came in the opening half. Navy struck first in the 24th minute on a header from Jade Seabrook set up by a free kick, and Flanagan answered with her first goal of the season in the 37th minute to tie things up off an assist from Madison Oyer.

"Navy is very good," Roberts said. "They are a well-organized, strong team, but we were able to deal with them. For us to only give up one goal on a restart and none in the run of play was impressive."

Neither team managed another score through the remainder of regulation or in the two overtime periods, though both teams had close calls. Navy's Courtney Mason hit the post in the 104th minute, and Ball State's Elaina Musleh got behind the Navy defense but fired high over the net in the 107th minute.

Ball State played two goalkeepers for the first time this season with both making five saves. Brooke Dennis started and played the first half before Alyssa Heintschel came in to make her first collegiate appearance. Heintschel held Navy scoreless for the final 65 minutes of the game.

"We wanted to get Alyssa some experience before conference play began, and this was a good chance to do it," Roberts said. "She did an outstanding job, and Brooke was great just like she has been."

Ball State will be back on its home field Saturday for the first time in three weeks. The Cardinals will host Jacksonville State at 2 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex and will also celebrate Senior Day. It will be Ball State's final non-conference game.

Bowling Green 0, Detroit 3

Bowling Green, Ohio – Looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2011 season having blown out Chicago State 8-0 in its last contest, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team stumbled on Sunday, as the Falcons fell at home to the Detroit Titans 3-0 at Cochrane Stadium.

The loss drops BGSU to 1-5-0 on the year, while the win propels the Titans to 2-4-0 on the season.

"I'm honestly really disappointed. Detroit has some really special players in the final third of the field and they definitely capitalized off of some of our mistakes, but I don't think we are a 3-0 difference between us and Detroit," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "(On younger players) Yeah they need minutes under their belt and I definitely think in the second half, I don't know how many upperclassmen were on the field, I think maybe one, but we are getting them minutes and they did well."

The first half was played fairly evenly for most of the frame until a span of two minutes late allowed the Titans to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

BGSU put a lot of pressure on the Detroit defensive backline for much of the opening 15 minutes of play, as Madison Schupbach and Sidney Huth each had a shot for the Falcons to open the contest. While Schupbach's contested attempt was just wide of the goal, Huth's shot from just outside of 25 yards out was hauled in by Detroit goalkeeper Marina Manzo in the 13th minute of play.

After the two teams traded shots over the next 11 minutes, BGSU goalkeeper Lauren Cadel made the first of what would be several spectacular saves on the day in the 24th minute. The redshirt-sophomore made a diving stop off a header from a cross into the box to keep the Titans off the scoreboard early.

Both teams would miss high on the next three combined shot attempts, as BGSU's Kara Ross had her first shot go high of the cross bar in the 35th minute, until in the 36th minute Cadel again came up big in goal for the Falcons, leaping to punch away an open shot from Detroit's Jennifer Borawski along the right side of the box.

Just over a minute later, after a corner kick, Detroit's Haley Burtraw played a cross into the front left post from the right side of the field which found the head of Alyssa Riley for a goal to give the Titans a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.

Less than a minute later, in the 39th minute, it would be another header from Riley, this time off a rebounded shot that hit the post and then deflected off a few players in the box, that would find the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-0 lead with less than 13 minutes to go in the first half.

Cadel would make another diving save in the 43rd minute, this time on another header from Riley off a corner kick, as she laid out to her left to make the stop.

BGSU's Ross, who ended the first half with a shot that was blocked by a Detroit defender, opened up the second half with a long shot that was caught by Manzo in the center of the goal in the 47th minute.

Following a Skylar Fleak shot in the 49th minute, which was wide of the pipes, Detroit tallied three straight shots, one of which was halted once more by a diving Cadel, over the next 10 minutes to keep the pressure on the Falcons' defense.

Continuing to battle despite the deficit, BGSU posted shots from freshman Rachel Winters, sophomore Alexa Cheripko, Ross and Schupbach over an eight minute span and continued to search for their first goal of the match. The last three shots of the four were all directly at Manzo in the center of the goal.

Cadel would make her fifth save of the contest in the 69th minute on a low line drive shot off the left foot of Aubrey Formica to keep the Falcons down just two goals with 20 minutes to play in regulation.

However, the final 20 minutes of play saw the Falcons' Schupbach have a shot blocked in the 77th minute, a Melissa Needham attempt stopped by Manzo in the 81st minute, and another Schupbach header sail wide in the 88th minute, while Detroit added an insurance goal in the 80th minute on a shot from inside the box by Carley Rice on a three-on-two attack by the Titans.

Cadel suffered the loss in goal for BGSU despite making five tough stops between the pipes, while Detroit's Manzo picked up the win with seven saves for the game.

Bowling Green totaled 15 shots on the afternoon, placing seven on frame, yet seemed to kick it right at the Detroit goalkeeper on nearly every attempt. Detroit tallied 17 shots and put eight on goal in the game.

The Titans also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, while fouls were even at eight apiece.

Both Ross and Schupbach led the Falcons' offensive attack with four shots apiece, while Fleak added three shots off the bench. Four other Falcons had one shot on the day.

BGSU will wrap up its 2014 non-conference slate next Friday, Sept. 19, as the Falcons will hit the road to take on Butler at 7 p.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Central Michigan 1, Colorado College 3

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Central Michigan women's soccer team concluded its trip to Colorado on Sunday, falling to Colorado College, 3-1.

The loss was CMU's third consecutive, leaving the Chippewas 1-5-1. Colorado College is 4-1-2.

The Chippewas will play host to Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne (1-6) on Friday, Sept. 19 for a non-league match. That match begins a three-game home stretch during which the Chippewas will play Northern Illinois (Sept. 26) in the Mid-American Conference opener, and Western Michigan (Sept. 28).

CMU coach Peter McGahey made some lineup adjustments for Sunday's match against the Tigers, including at goalkeeper, where Heather Laeufer drew her first start of the season in place of Maddy Bunnell.

"We were certainly glad to give Heather an opportunity to play," coach Peter McGahey said. "We made a couple of adjustments to the lineup and played some people in different positions, particularly in attacking positions and I think that really worked out well

Senior Laura Gosse scoring CMU's only tonight off a Jennifer Gassman assist. It was Gosse's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

"Gosse took a really good goal today and I think that will be something for us to build on moving forward," McGahey said.

Sarah Schweiss scored just 5 minutes, 55 seconds into the match to stake the Tigers to a 1-0 lead.

"We were really running up hill and chasing at that point," McGahey said.

Goss tied it about seven minutes later, but the Tigers jumped back in front at the 19:21 mark on a goal by Kaeli Vandersluis.

The Tigers kept Laeufer on her toes as they outshot the Chippewas, 26-5, and posted eight corner kicks to CMU's four. Laeufer made 12 saves.

Kent State 2, Louisville 3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite having a 2-0 lead after the first period, the Kent State women's soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to Louisville on Sunday at Lynn Field.   The loss dropped the Golden Flashes to 4-2-0 on the year, while the Cardinals improved to 3-4-0.

Kent State struck early as freshman Doni Capehart (Orient, Ohio) tallied her first career goal just 7:09 into the game.  Freshman Kristen Brots (Naperville. Ill.) crossed the ball to Capehart, who headed one past Cardinals goalkeeper Paige Brown to put Kent State ahead, 1-0.

Senior forward Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) then scored her first goal of the year after she nailed a shot from over 25-yards out to the upper corner of the net to increase Kent State's lead to 2-0.   At the intermission, Kent State and Louisville were even in shots, 4-4, but Louisville edged Kent State 2-0 in corner kicks.

Louisville turned up the heat in the second period, out-shooting the Golden Flashes 17-0 in the final 45 minutes.  Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Senn (Grand Island, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves in the half, but the Cardinals were able to even the score to send the game into overtime minutes.

Louisville's Kaela Dickerman earned her first goal of the year when she blasted a shot past Senn at 52:42 from the top of the box.  With just over four minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals tied the score at 2-2 when Isabella Habuda scored off a Hannah Konermann cross.

The overtime period did not last long, as Louisville's Alison Price earned her first goal of the season after knocking in a cross from Chinyelu Asher 1:58 into the period.

Senn (4-2-0) tallied a career-high 11 saves for the Golden Flashes  and received the loss in net for the Golden Flashes.  Paige Brown recorded one save for the Cardinals.

Louisville out-shot Kent State 22-4 for the game, and led 6-1 in corner kicks.

Kent State is back in action against Oakland at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 at Zoeller Field.

Miami 3, IPFW 0

OXFORD, Ohio – After spending a month excelling on the road, the Miami soccer team put on a show in its home opener on Sunday. The RedHawks outshot IPFW 28-3 en route to a dominant 3-0 victory over the Mastodons at the Miami Soccer Field.

Sunday’s win is Miami’s second straight as it moves to 4-1 for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Red and White went to work from the opening kickoff, taking seven shots in the first 16 and a half minutes of play. Miami finally got on the board in the 25th minute when Rachel Marble corralled Shannon Stearns’ free kick out of traffic in the box before feeding to Kelsey Dinges on the right side. The senior blasted a shot that beat IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika to the far side to put Miami up 1-0.

The ‘Hawks were statistically dominant in the first 45 minutes of play, owning a decided 13-1 advantage in shot attempts. Despite the lopsided play, Dinges’ second goal of the year was the only difference on the scoreboard when Miami gathered at halftime with a 1-0 lead.

MU came out in the second half determined to create some separation with IPFW and finally got some breathing room in the 51st minute when Kat Zalar fired a well-placed shot from the left side of the box that went into the upper 90 for her second goal of the year. That goal was created in similar fashion to the first as Marble brought the ball out of traffic after Olivia Evans’ free kick, both garnered assists on the tally that put MU up 2-0, its largest lead of the season.

“We played pretty well in the first half, but we were still in a dangerous spot with us only being up by a goal,” head coach Bobby Kramig said. “I thought we handled that well, it was nice to see everyone pull the trigger and put a couple more goals on the score board in the second half. In the first half, we tried to play a little too quickly at times, but we settled down in the attacking third in the second half.”

The Mastodons nearly got on the board shortly thereafter as a Tessa Edwards’ corner kick got deflected to Rachel Good just outside the goal box. Good had a clean look at the net, but her shot sailed well high of the cage to keep MU up by two.

Miami continued utilizing its bench as the second half wore on with no drop off in play. The Red and White owned a 15-2 advantage in shots during the second half and got a goal out of Jenna Weiner with 4:36 remaining to cap the scoring.

The 28 shot attempts, along with the three shots allowed, both were season bests for Miami, which entered play on Sunday being outshot 50-29 in the first four matches of the season. Danielle Wiseman picked up the win after playing a scoreless first half. Vic Maniaci made her season debut in goal and posted a clean sheet in the second half.

The RedHawks continue their home stand on Friday when they host Marshall at 4 p.m.

Northern Illinois 0, SIUE 1

DeKALB, Ill. – Despite dominating the second half, the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team couldn’t overcome an early deficit and dropped a 1-0 decision against SIUE on Sunday afternoon at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The Huskies (2-5-0) started slowly and conceded a goal in the 10th minute when Caroline Hoefert scored for the visiting Cougars (2-3-1), and that moment ended up being the difference between the two teams.

“It was disappointing the way we started the game,” NIU head coach John Ross said. “Conceding an early goal wasn’t what we wanted, but I was impressed with how we responded.”

After falling behind, NIU grew into the game by dominating possession and forcing numerous corner kicks and throw-ins. Sammy O’Brien (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) utilized her exciting flip-throws and Gwen Sabo (Alton, Ill./Alton) delivered several dangerous corners, but the Huskies just couldn’t force an equalizing goal into the net.

“Once they got the lead, we got after them,” Ross said. “We controlled the second half, and that’s the way I expect us to play all of the time. We should’ve finished a couple chances. We need to start expecting where the ball will be, not reacting when it’s already there. That’s how you score goals.”

NIU’s constant pressure could’ve been rewarded with a penalty kick on numerous occasions, but the referee waved away the home team’s appeals for a few questionable handballs and fouls in the SIUE box. The Huskies finished with an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.

Also of note, freshman goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) made four saves, including one tremendous stop late in the first half on an SIUE breakaway that kept NIU within one goal.

NIU returns to action for its last nonconference game on Thursday evening when Green Bay comes to DeKalb for a 6 p.m. kickoff between the Huskies and Phoenix at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Toledo 1, Notre Dame 2

SOUTH BEND, IN - The No. 19 Fighting Irish clipped the Rockets in the final minutes of Sunday afternoons match in South Bend, IN. Notre Dame’s Morgan Andrews tallied her second goal of the day with a penalty kick in the 88th minute to topple Toledo, 2-1. UT is now 3-3-1 on the season and turns their attention to a match at Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 21 with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m.

“What a great effort today by the entire group,” UT head coach Brad Evans said. “I was extremely proud of the discipline we showed through the game, sticking with the game plan and making the key adjustment after going down 0-1 to pull one back. I was disappointed to come out with a loss but we progressed as a team from last week. This is a great team to work with and I'm excited about the future of this team"

The Rockets survived a barrage of shots in the first half as junior goalkeeper Sam Tiongson continued her solid play between the posts. The Carmel, IN native corralled 10 saves today, five in each half, as ND held a 24-4 shot advantage.

"I'm proud of our team for staying in the game mentally after being down a goal and tying it back up,” Tiongson said. “I'm looking forward to what we can do for the next game and the rest of the season with the growth we've shown so far."

Trailing 1-0 in the 76th minute, The Rockets broke through to tie the game off the foot of sophomore Kiersten Johnson. Junior midfielder Geri Siudzinski chipped a long pass through the Irish defense and found Johnson, who rattled the shot off the left post and into the net from 22-yards out.

"It's unfortunate that we lost but it's a loss that is bitter sweet,” Johnson said. “I couldn't be more proud and happy with the way we played and were grinding throughout the entire match. I felt like we left it all on the field.”

The Rockets nearly took the lead just 10 minutes later as freshman Sydney Vinton found space and fired a shot toward the corner of the goal. ND goalkeeper Kaela Little was able to punch the shot over the top of the bar at the last second to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

The Irish capitalized a few minutes later as UT was called for a penalty in the box. Andrews stepped up and blasted a shot past Tiongson to give Notre Dame the one-goal victory.

“It's unfortunate that we lost but we showed that we improved from Michigan and this week of practice,” Johnson said. “We worked on connecting through the midfield to the forwards and that's how we scored our goal. It was a team battle, we can build from this and I believe we have a lot of potential for the rest of the season."

Western Michigan 3, Illinois Chicago 0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team improved to 5-1-0 on the season and earned its third-straight shutout at the WMU Soccer Complex after defeating Illinois-Chicago, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos held the Flames to just two total shots on the day while firing off 23. Lindsey Lee, Rachel Chaney and Liz Abro all scored goals in the win. Stephanie Heber did not have to make a save on the day to earn the shutout, while her counterpart Kelly Fritz made 11 for UIC.

"We did a lot of good things today," said head coach Nate Norman. "We kept a lot of possession and created a lot of chances. It was great to get a set piece goal as well. I was impressed with UIC, though. I think their staff has done a fantastic job with their team. They play a good brand of soccer and made it difficult on us."

After several chances in the first half WMU broke through in the 41st minute. Diana Dedvukaj lobbed a corner kick into the box and Lee headed it into the net for her first goal of the season and second career goal.

WMU pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. Oliva Vollmers played the ball to Chaney, who shot it from 15 yards out and over Fritz for her second of the season.

The Broncos added their third and final goal of the night in the 87th minute. Abro was unmarked and Mackenzie Barber found her alone and she buried it into the net from 15 yards out.

Western Michigan wraps up non-conference play with a trip to Illinois State on Friday and then hosts Saint Louis on Sunday at 2 p.m.
