Box Score
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Coming back from an early 1-0 deficit, the University of Akron women's soccer team captured their first win of 2014 as they defeated Robert Morris in their second and final match at the Steel City Classic in Pittsburgh.
The Zips found themselves in a hole early as Colonials forward Antonia Grese took a cross from teammate Kristie Hamilton to put Robert Morris on the board 1-0 in the 15th minute.
Just over five minutes later, however, UA found success on the offensive end as senior Lani Smith scored the equalizer off of a corner kick by sophomore Karin Norman. Smith, the team's leading goalscorer from one year ago, took six shots in the game with four of those on goal, both team highs.
With less than two minutes left in the first half, freshman Loreana Lonigro crossed the ball into the middle for junior Holly Ohradzansky, who, with the goalie committed up in the box, found the back of the net to put the Zips up 2-1 heading into halftime.
Ohradzansky tallied the first points of her college career with her goal in the 44th minute. The midfielder from Avon, Ohio, matched her career shot total of three in today's game alone as she took three on goal. Ohradzansky has appeared in 27 games with Akron, primarily at outside back, heading into her third year with the team.
Akron (1-1) kept pushing forward in the second half, taking 12 shots and three corner kicks, but was unable to score with Colonials new goalie Becky Schoenecker making eight saves in the period. Schoenecker replaced starter Chelsea De Jager and played all 45 minutes of the second half.
The Zips held strong on their defensive end, allowing no goals to Robert Morris (1-1) on five shots and no corners in the final half of play.
Junior Klaire Adee played the full 90 minutes for Akron in goal, compiling two saves over the day.
Lonigro added two shots for the Zips, both on goal, while junior Sydney Blomquist contributed two as well with one on goal.
Akron returns home this week to take on No. 5 Virginia Tech for their home opener this Friday, Aug. 29 at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field.
Zips single-game and season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online anytime at ZipsTickets.com, or from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET on Mondays through Fridays by either calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766) or visiting The C.P. and Cornelia S. Ball State
Box Score
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Gabby Veldman scored her second goal in as many games, and the Ball State soccer team posted its second straight win to begin the season.
The Cardinals went on the road Sunday to post a 2-0 victory at Green Bay, improving their record to 2-0. Green Bay, which was coming off a win over IUPUI, dropped to 1-1 on the year.
"We played very well," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "Green Bay is a big, strong, physical team, but I thought we matched up with them and did well to make sure that wasn't a factor."
Abbey Fiser scored the second goal for Ball State, which outscored its opponents by a combined 5-0 margin in the season's opening weekend.
Brooke Dennis made four saves in goal Sunday to record her second shutout of the season and her fifth in 10 career starts. The sophomore from Wauconda, Ill., has teamed with the Ball State back line to hold opponents scoreless through the first 180 minutes of the season.
"Defensively, we were very solid with the back four and Brooke in goal.” Roberts said. “Green Bay is a seasoned team with some quality players. They were threatening in their attacks, but we did a really good job denying them from good scoring opportunities."
Veldman, a sophomore from South Bend, has scored the first goal in both games this season, and both of them have proved to be game-winners. She fired a shot Sunday from 25 yards out that found the top left corner of the net in the 27th minute.
It remained a one-goal lead until when Fiser's first goal of the season in the 68th minute extended the advantage. Cailey Starck crossed a corner kick into the box, and Victoria Jacobs headed it down to Fiser who was there to finish.
Ball State is off to a 2-0 start for the second straight year and returns to action next weekend. The Cardinals will travel to Purdue for a 7 p.m. contest Friday and then return to Muncie to host Morehead State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Bowling Green
Box Score
Ann Arbor, Michigan – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team displayed heart and pure determination on Sunday afternoon, as the Falcons held the nationally ranked No. 7 Michigan Wolverines to just one goal in each half in a 2-0 road loss at the U-M Soccer Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The loss drops BGSU to 0-2-0 on the year, while Michigan remains unbeaten at 2-0-0 on the season.
"We definitely competed against the number 7 team in the nation. The stats show that they are extremely dangerous in the attack," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "Lauren (Cadel) played extremely well in the goal, making several big saves to keep us in the game and overall we were very disciplined with our defensive shape. After seeing 20 corners and not giving up a goal, I think it's safe to say we were pretty sharp on defensive corners. I'm proud of the effort we put out across the board and I know we gained some confidence in the attack."
Facing one of the best scoring offenses in the country in the Michigan Wolverines, the Falcons' defense refused to breakdown as BGSU goalkeeper Lauren Cadel totaled eight saves in the loss, six of which came in the second half of play.
All three of the Falcons' shot attempts came in the first half and were placed on frame.
The nationally ranked Wolverines set the tone for the match early as U-M controlled possession for most of the first half, tallying eight shots and six corner kicks in the first 24 minutes of play and continued to put pressure on the Falcons' defense.
It would be on the Wolverines' sixth corner kick and eighth shot attempt of the contest when the Falcons' defense would allow a goal, as Michigan's Ani Sarkisian played a corner kick into the box where Corrine Harris got her foot on the ball and Christina Ordonez followed with an easy tap-in past BGSU's Cadel to put the home team in front 1-0 in the 24th minute.
The young Falcons registered two shot attempts of their own over the first 24 minutes of play, putting both on frame and forcing U-M goalkeeper Megan Hinz to make a stop on both scoring chances.
Sophomore Melissa Needham placed the first BGSU shot on frame in the 19th minute, testing Michigan's Hinz between the pipes early, while just under two minutes later fellow sophomore Kara Ross put a shot online in the 22nd minute which was hauled in by the U-M keeper.
After continually fighting off the Wolverines' offensive barrages, as the home team recorded seven more corner kicks and two more shots over the rest of the opening half of play, the Falcons refused to quit and looked for the equalizer late in the half.
With the clock running out in the first half, Bowling Green freshman Rachel Winters played a corner kick into the box in the 44th minute where fellow newcomer Alexa Cheripko fired off a shot towards the goal only to see the Wolverines' Hinz again make the save to spoil the Falcons' scoring effort and keep the score at 1-0 in favor of U-M heading into the halftime intermission.
The second half played out much like the first, as Michigan controlled possession and kept the ball on the Falcons' defensive half of the field for most of the final 45 minutes of play.
However, BGSU's Cadel kept the Falcons in the game, as the redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper halted three Wolverine scoring looks – one in the 47th minute, a second in the 55th minute and a third in the 59th minute – as the Falcons continued to fight.
Following a shot by Michigan's Nicky Waldeck that hit the post in the 66th minute, the Falcons tried to counter minutes later only to be called for offsides in the 70th minute of the contest.
Michigan doubled its lead in the 78th minute, as the Wolverines were awarded a penalty kick on a BGSU foul in the box. U-M's Waldeck knocked the free shot into the lower left corner of the net to push the Wolverines' lead to 2-0.
Cadel would make two more stops in the 80th and 83rd minutes on shots from Michigan's Taylor Timko, yet the Falcons struggled to muster up any offensive attack over the closing minutes in the 2-0 loss.
Michigan outshot BGSU 27-3 for the match, including 17-0 in the second half, and also held a 20-1 lead over the Falcons in corner kicks overall.
Bowling Green (0-2-0) will remain on the road for its next bout, as the Falcons will face off with the Purple Aces of Evansville next Friday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. in Evansville, Indiana.
Buffalo
Box Score
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MAC) picked up their second straight victory over a Big Four foe on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium as they downed Canisius 2-0 in decisive fashion. The Bulls dominated the match from the opening kick, owning a 36-11 advantage in shots.
"I can't be more pleased with this weekend and the overall team performance," said first-year head coach Shawn Burke. "Every player that we have asked to step in and play has performed for us and that's a great luxury to have. It was great way to wrap up the first weekend with a dominant performance even though the score sheet may not represent that. I thought we really showed what UB women's soccer was today."
The Bulls are now 2-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2011 season when they started out 3-0. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall earned her second career shutout in as many games as she recorded a career-high seven saves in the victory.
The Bulls jumped on Canisius early on and they were able to break through with the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute. Katie Roberts started the play with a blast from the right of the goalkeeper that deflected off her hands and right to the right foot of Celina Carrero who buried the ball in the back of the net for her first of the season.
The Bulls second goal came with 16 seconds remaining in the opening half as Megan Abman found the loose ball in front of the Golden Griffins goal and deposited it in the back of the net. Rachel Cook blasted a shot off the post from 10 yards out and it eventually found Abman all alone to the right of the keeper for the goal.
Following halftime, the Golden Griffins came out with more aggressiveness and Dougall made her best save of the game in the 52nd minute. Canisius sent a perfect cross into the box where Jenny Paggione was able to get a head on the ball but Dougall stood tall and made the quick save, preserving the Bulls 2-0 lead.
Buffalo took over the match down the stretch as Roberts had three brilliant chances to make the score 3-0 but she was unable to break through with her first tally of the season. In the 75th minute, Roberts was in close but her shot attempt was denied by the Golden Griffins keeper, Brigid St. Leger. A minute later her low shot attempt was pushed away after a nice diving effort.
The UB defensive unit of Jackie Hall, Angel Hart, Kristin Markiewicz and Sophie Therien were solid once again for the Bulls as they helped secure the second straight clean sheet for Dougall. Kassidy Kidd and Courtney Mann also had strong defensive games for the Bulls as they have not allowed a goal through the first two games of the season.
For the game, the Bulls completely dominated the Golden Griffins as they held the 36-11 advantage in shots and the 11-5 advantage in corner kicks. Nine of the Bulls 11 starter recorded at least one shot including a team-high nine shot attempts by Roberts.
St. Leger was very solid in net for the Golden Griffins as she made a season-high 14 saves in the defeat.
The Bulls will hit the road for their first match away from UB Stadium on Friday, Aug. 29 as they will travel to play Duquesne at 7:00 pm.
Central Michigan
Box Score
NORMAL, Ill. - Tough season-opening weekend for the Central Michigan women's soccer team.
Hannah Leinert scored two goals Sunday as Illinois State handed the Chippewas a 5-1 loss at the Redbirds' Adelaide Street Field. CMU fell to DePaul, 2-1, Friday in its opening game.
In four of the last five years, Illinois State has both won the Missouri Valley Conference championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. DePaul also earned an NCAA Tourney bid in 2013.
"We've seen two very good programs, both with a history of success," second-year CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Exposing ourselves as a young team to that level of competition never hurts you. When you strive for excellence sometimes there's bumps in the road."
The Redbirds, who opened the season Friday with a 4-1 win over Northern Illinois, outshot CMU, 25-4. Paige Jarsombeck and Emily Dickman also scored for the Redbirds. CMU scored an own-goal 6 minutes into the match to open the scoring.
Emily Cooksey scored on a penalty kick for CMU with under eight minutes to play. Maddy Bunnell made 12 saves in goal for the Chippewas, who play at Detroit on Sunday, Aug. 31, then entertain Oakland in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 5.
"Maddy Bunnell did a really good job in goal," McGahey said. "She did a good job of weathering the storm and maintaining her composure throughout.
"The reality is (Sunday's) performance is not acceptable and not something we want to create habits from. To be honest we weren't very good against a good team, but we're going to learn and grow and we're going to get better.
"The good part is we come back with four days of training before we face Detroit next Sunday. We'll get back to work , get things polished up, and look forward to Detroit next Sunday."
Eastern Michigan
Box Score
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Angela Vultaggio scored twice in a span of 53 seconds, while junior Megan McCabe made five saves to help the Eastern Michigan University soccer team knock off the Indiana University Hoosiers, 2-0, Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24, at Scicluna Field. The win marks the second straight 2-0 decision for the Green and White to begin the 2014 season.
After falling to the Hoosiers (1-1-0) in the first meeting between the two programs last season, the Eagles (2-0-0) evened up the all-time series with revenge in this year's contest. The victory over IU is the program's first win over a Big Ten Conference opponent since EMU knocked off Michigan State, 1-0, Sept. 3, 1999.
Vultaggio, known for having a knack of finding the back of the net, struck all three of her shots on goal within three minutes of one another, and her final two were successful in getting past the keeper in the 24th and 25th minutes. The two-goal performance was the fourth multi-goal game of her storied career.
McCabe (2-0-0) made five fantastic saves to secure back-to-back shutouts to start the year. She turned away shot after shot as Indiana fired 24 in her direction throughout the 90 minutes. On the other side of the pitch, IU keeper Sarah Stone (1-1-0) stopped 2-of-4 shots on goal, while she faced a total of eight attempts in the match.
While Indiana held a 24-8 advantage on shots as well as 9-1 on corner kicks, the disparity was in large part due to the Eagles holding a two-goal lead at the break. The pressure of the IU attack was strong throughout the 45-minute second half as the visitors tried to mount a comeback; nonetheless, McCabe and the EMU backline defended well to keep the Hoosiers off the scoreboard.
Indiana began the game on the offensive, taking shots in the first eight minutes of the contest. During that frame, the Hoosiers' Abby Smith found the back of the net; however, the goal was negated due to an offside by her teammate, keeping the game at nil-nil.
Despite the Hoosiers taking the first six shots, it was the Eagles who landed the first shot on goal in the 22nd minute. Vultaggio deflected an IU pass and was able to get ahead of the defender for a prime scoring opportunity. She tried to sneak the ball into the right side of the net, but the shot was saved by Stone. However, the counter proved to be a momentum swing for the Green and White.
Two minutes after her first look at the net, Vultaggio found the upper-90 opening to give Eastern the 1-0 lead. Seeing her teammate with space in the middle of the box, Oddan delivered a pass to Vultaggio, and the Chesterfield, Mich. native rifled a strike in the upper left-hand corner of the net for the goal. Just 53 seconds later, the Eagles weren't finished with their attack. On the defensive side off the pitch, Trapp blasted a strong lead to Vultaggio on a 30 yard run down the middle of the field. The senior did not miss her one-on-one opportunity this time around, making a shifty move to stymie the keeper and put the ball away for the two-goal advantage.
EMU had one more scoring chance in the opening half with sophomore Gabriella Mancini firing a shot on goal that was saved by Stone. The Green and White continued to maintain possession for most of the waning minutes of the first half to lead by a 2-0 margin after 45 minutes.
Indiana out-shot Eastern 9-5 in the first half, but it was the home team who found the back of the net twice and held the shots on goal statistic, 4-1. Corner kicks were also in favor of the Hoosiers, 3-1, but the EMU back line defended from any goals on the set pieces.
Starting the second half with a two-goal lead, Eastern was prepared for the offensive onslaught brought by Indiana. For 45 minutes, the EMU defense faced countless attacks as the Hoosiers took 15 shots in the second half, including four on goal. Twice, McCabe denied headers from IU's Jessie Bujouves, who scored two goals in Indiana's season-opening victory on Friday. One of the saves was a dive at the left post, where the junior keeper sacrificed her entire body to make the stop.
Facing multiple corners as well, the starting backline of Emily Dzik, Hallee Kansman, Julia Lombardi and Chanel Vani used their heads to deflect the ball away on the set pieces, and their quick feet kicked any potential danger away. The quartet of Eagles alongside McCabe nailed down the second shutout in as many games in the young 2014 season.
Following the victorious opening weekend at home, the Eagles will have 35 days until they play another match at Scicluna Field. Coach Hall and his team hit the road for six games over the five-week span, starting with the short drive to East Lansing, Aug. 29, to face the Spartans of Michigan State. After the in-state battle, EMU flocks south to South Bend, Ind. for a contest against nationally-ranked Texas Tech, Aug. 31. The Sunday morning game, set to begin at 11 a.m., will take place at Alumni Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
Kent State
Box Score
BRADFORD, Pa. – The Kent State women's soccer team fell 1-0 to host St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at Parkway Field. The Golden Flashes are now 1-1-0 on the year, while the Bonnies improved to 1-1-0.
The Bonnies scored 13:59 into the game when rookie Danielle Vis tallied her first career goal, and the first of the Bonnies' season, after receiving a cross from junior Abby Maiello. Vis got the ball past Kent State junior keeper Stephanie Senn with a high shot to the right corner. The Grand Island, N.Y. native tallied three saves in her 90 minutes in net.
Both teams had four shots in the first half, but the Golden Flashes turned up their intensity in the final 45 minutes out-shooting the Bonnies 7-2. Kent State also had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.
St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Christina Sarokon picked up her first win of the year after stopping four Kent State shots. The victory was the first-ever win for the Bonnies against Kent State, as the Golden Flashes have won all five previous meetings.
The Golden Flashes will now travel west to compete in a tournament hosted at UNLV. Kent State will challenge St. Francis at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, and will then take on the University of Colorado at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Miami
Box Score
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the second-straight contest, the Miami University soccer team’s bench proved the difference in a 1-0 win over Butler on Sunday.
Freshman Kat Zalar scored her first-collegiate goal with 13:28 left in regulation to clinch the RedHawks (2-0) perfect opening weekend and subsequent tournament title at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup.
Butler controlled play for large stretches of the first half. The Bulldogs outshot the RedHawks 7-1 and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks over the first 45 minutes of play, though only one BU shot made its way on goal, which was stopped by Danielle Wiseman. That left the contest still scoreless at halftime.
“Credit to Butler, they are a disciplined and well-organized team,” head coach Bobby Kramig said. “They made things difficult for us. We weren’t really sure how to handle the situation and it was a good learning experience for our kids in terms of playing against teams that are set up like them. At halftime, we encouraged the team to play a little more aggressively. Once we did that, they loosened up a bit and we had some more success.”
The Red and White picked it up as the second half wore on and created more opportunities in the final regulation frame. After getting outshot by a 12-2 clip over the first 61:15, Miami attempted three-straight shots and had a pair of corner kick attempts over the next six minutes, but none found the net.
That all changed in the 77th minute when Zalar picked off goalkeeper Madison Card’s short play and fired into the net to give the Red and White a 1-0 lead with just over 13 minutes left to play. From there, the Red and White defense really locked things down and only allowed one more shot attempt the rest of the way to secure the tournament title.
“Kat took advantage of a misplay and did a great job on her first touch to gather the ball and finish,” Kramig said. “I felt we made some good adjustments defensively at halftime. We quit chasing the ball as much as we were in the first half.”
In her second-straight start in goal, Wiseman stopped three shots to post her second consecutive shutout. She stopped all nine shots she faced in 180 minutes of time in goal over the weekend. Wiseman was named the tournament’s Defensive MVP and was one of five RedHawks to earn a spot on the all-tournament team, joining Kelsey Dinges (Offensive MVP), Jess Bronke, Rachel Marble and Courtney Zanotti.
The Bulldogs ended up outshooting the RedHawks 15-8 and owned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Play was much closer at both ends in the second half, however, as Butler held just an 8-7 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes of play.
Miami returns to the pitch on Aug. 31 when it travels to Northwestern.
Northern Illinois
Box Score
MACOMB, Ill. – With temperatures in the 90s and the heat index topping triple digits in Macomb, Ill., on Sunday afternoon, the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team was forced to battle against two opponents: the Western Illinois Leathernecks and the heat.
In a close and hard-fought match that featured several scoring chances for both teams, the Huskies (0-2) fell to the Leathernecks (1-1) by a score of 2-0.
Following an evenly played first half that finished scoreless, Sarah Hall gave Western Illinois the lead for good with the opening goal of the match in the 67th minute. About ten minutes later, Nicole Beer scored the Leathernecks’ second goal to secure their victory.
After the game, NIU head coach John Ross said he was disappointed in the result but proud of his team for fighting through the difficult conditions.
“I thought we did really well in the first half,” Ross said, “but it was tough to keep up those energy levels in the second half. Soccer is incredibly difficult to play in this kind of heat and humidity; even connecting simple passes together becomes a challenge. But we did our best considering the conditions.”
Ross said he was very impressed with the energy and application of Huskie central defenders Jess Wooldridge (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) and Natalia Peña (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates).
“I thought Natalia and Jess were fantastic at the back for us today,” Ross said. “Wooldridge played 90 minutes and Natalia almost played the entire game, and they worked well together to deal with most of the attacks that came at them.”
“Moving forward, we’ll watch the tape from this weekend, evaluate our play and make the necessary adjustments,” Ross added. “We need to recover after a tough weekend and put in better performances going forward, and I’m confident we will do that.”
The Huskies depart for the Hawaiian Islands on Wednesday for two matches in Honolulu: a Thursday night match against Hawai’i and a Saturday night showdown with Seattle. Both games begin at 12 a.m. Central Time, meaning they start at midnight on Friday and Sunday morning for fans following the team from the DeKalb area.
Ohio
Box Score
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ohio University women's soccer team fell to Purdue, 2-0 at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup, today at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
Purdue (1-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute off a header by Erika Arkans. The Boilermakers added on in the 66th minute when Nichole Robertson scored to give Purdue the 2-0 lead and the win.
"The Ohio team that was on the field today was not the team that we had been throughout preseason and the last two games," head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "It was disappointing to finish the weekend off on a negative note."
The Bobcats registered nine shots, with redshirt sophomore Carly Manso accounting for six of them. Seniors Tonya Frasik and Liz Finley, and freshman Hannah Jaggers all had one shot apiece.
Senior starting goalie Nicole Amari allowed two goals and recorded 10 saves.
"Nicole [Amari] played well." Rodgers said. "We gave them a lot of opportunities and she was solid. Neither one of the goals she could do anything about, they were good execution on Purdue's part. That should give her a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season."
Freshman Allie Curry was named to the Boilermaker Challenge Cup All-Tournament Team.
"We have to look back and reorganize and take a look inside at who we are and who we want to be and be ready to play Wright State on the road Friday and Kentucky on Sunday," Rodgers said. "It's going to be two really hard games again."
The Bobcats (0-2-0) continue their four-game road trip when they head to Dayton, Ohio, on Friday, Aug. 29 to take on Wright State at 5 p.m. at Rinzler Student Sports Complex. On Sunday, Aug. 31, Ohio heads to Lexington, Ky., for a match-up with Kentucky. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.

Toledo battled Cal State Northridge to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon at Scott Park. With the tie, the Rockets’ record moves to 1-0-1 after defeating Detroit, 3-1, on Friday.
“I think our forwards, and this is part of their youth, didn’t create enough today,” UT head coach Brad Evans said. “We did have a really good chance to win at the end and I am excited about this group. This was step in the right direction and we will continue to build.”
The Rockets and Matadors combined for 33 shots in the 110 minutes of play. Toledo junior keeper Sam Tiongson recorded six saves and is now 1-0-1 as a starter in 2014.
The Rockets best chance came late in the first overtime period as freshman Sophie Pohl made a run into the box and blasted a shot at net. The CSUN goaltender was just able to get a hand on the ball and deflect it over the crossbar.
The Matadors best chance also ended with a terrific save as Tiongson made a diving stop at the post to keep the match scoreless in the second half.
Toledo returns to action on Friday, Aug. 29 with a match at Scott Park against ACC foe Pittsburgh. The Rockets and Panthers will kickoff at 5 p.m.
