After drawing to a tie through 110 minutes of play just one week ago at home against Duquesne in their lone exhibition match this fall, the Zips managed just one shot in this match. Senior Lani Smith missed high in the 14th minute as the Panthers controlled the game for most of the night.
Pittsburgh took an early lead against Akron, scoring first in the ninth minute, and continued in the middle of the game with goals in the 41st and 49th minutes as well.
The Panthers took 15 shots compared to UA's one, while also attempting three corner kicks with the Zips not taking any.
In total, 21 players on the Zips' roster got playing time in the game with 20 of those securing double digit minutes in the loss.

Ball State
Box Score
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team exploded offensively in the first 25 minutes Friday and rode that wave to a 3-0 season-opening win over IPFW at the Briner Sports Complex.
Gabby Veldman, Madison Oyer and Franziska Sottner scored the goals in the 300th all-time game for the Ball State women’s soccer program as the Cardinals kicked off their 16th season of competition.
“We were very pleased with the mentality our team came out with,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “I think we came out with the right offensive mindset. We’ve been working on that quite a bit throughout preseason. It wasn’t just one person; it was several individuals who converted, so we’re delighted with the play of our forward line.”
Veldman, a sophomore from South Bend, scored less than five minutes into the game when she volleyed a cross from Elaina Musleh into the right side of the net. Oyer, a junior from Leo, Ind., made it 2-0 in the 20th minute, stealing the ball at midfield and taking it all the way to beat the IPFW keeper one-on-one.
Sottner struck just two minutes later. The freshman from Austria found the back of the net after a collecting a cross from Lucy Walton that found her all the way from the far side of the box.?
Sottner made a major impression in her first collegiate game, generating offensive chances and placing five of her six shot attempts on goal. She is one of seven freshmen that have joined a group of 20 returning letterwinners from last year’s Mid-American Conference Tournament runner-up team.
“I think the experience from last season has carried over,” Roberts said. “We’re a lot more mature, and we’re using that as a confidence booster. The new players who came in for us have really complemented what we already have here. We want to find players who have the ability as freshmen to come in and make an impact, and they are doing that.”
As a team, the Cardinals put 14 of their 21 shots on goal and pressured IPFW’s Sam Pavlika between the posts all night.
Defensively, they limited the Mastodons to six shots and only two looks at the goal. Brooke Dennis was there to stop both of those shots, preserving the clean sheet. It was the fourth shutout in nine career starts for the sophomore from Wauconda, Ill.
Ball State continues its season-opening weekend Sunday with its first road game of the year. The Cardinals will travel to the state of Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. CT (2 ET) contest Sunday at Green Bay.
Bowling Green
Box Score
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team opened up the 2014 regular season on Friday night with an early first half goal, yet saw the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champions in Morehead State tally the final two scores of the contest to edge the Falcons 2-1 at Cochrane Stadium.
The loss drops BGSU to 0-1-0 on the year, while Morehead State, the 2014 OVC preseason favorites to win the league, start the season out at 1-0-0.
The young Falcons, which started five freshmen and saw a total of 10 newcomers see the pitch in the season opener Friday night, weathered an early offensive surge from the Eagles to answer with a shot from freshman Skylar Fleak in the seventh minute, which was blocked, and a second shot from Madison Schupbach, which sailed wide of the goal in the 15th minute.
However, less than a minute later, the freshmen duo worked together as Fleak chased down a loose ball in the Eagles' defensive third of the field and played the ball back to Schupbach. Schupbach lined up a shot from just inside the top of the box and sent it past the Eagles' goalkeeper to put the home team on top 1-0 just 15 minutes into the contest.
The goal is Schupbach's first career goal as a Falcon, while the assist is the first for Fleak at BGSU.
The two teams traded shots over the next 10 minutes of play with the BGSU defense blocking one, forcing another shot attempt wide and picking up a stop in goal from redshirt-sophomore Lauren Cadel on another attempt to hold on to the slight 1-0 lead midway through the first half.
Yet the Eagles would take advantage of that same BGSU defense minutes later, as a lapse on a ball played into the box by the Falcons allowed Angela Black to settle the ball, turn and get behind a defender and score on a low shot in the 29th minute to knot the match up at 1-1.
Each team accounted for only one more shot each over the final 15 minutes of the opening half with Bowling Green's shot from sophomore Kara Ross forcing MSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd to make a stop in the 33rd minute and send the match into the halftime break tied at 1-1.
The second half saw the BGSU defense work hard and stifle the Eagles offense for most of the frame, as Morehead State controlled the pace of play and the ball for the majority of the final 45 minutes of play.
The Eagles got three shots from Ali Hawksford, a header which flew high over the cross bar in the 49th minute, another shot that sailed high in the 57th minute and a third shot that was offline wide in the 64th minute, while BGSU keeper Cadel made a saving grab on a header from Holly Tilley in the 59th minute to keep the match tied at 1-1.
Following three more scoring chances by the Eagles and a shot from BGSU senior Ashley Garr in the 81st minute, both teams looked to their bench for help with a total of six straight subs on the very humid night in Northwest Ohio.
One of those substitutions would pay off for the Eagles, as Tilley re-entered the contest in the 81st minute and abruptly took advantage of a ball that the BGSU defense failed to clear, scoring on a shot from the top right corner of the box that hit the far front post and just slipped in the net in the 82nd minute to put the Eagles up 2-1.
The Tilley goal proved to be the game-winner, as Morehead State continued to bleed the clock and kept the Falcons from getting another shot off over the final eight minutes of the match.
Morehead State outshot the Falcons 16-6 for the match, including holding an 8-1 advantage in the second half of play.
BGSU's Cadel recorded two saves on 16 Eagle shot attempts in goal, while MSU's Floyd tallied just one save on six BGSU shot attempts over the 90 minute match.
The Falcons' Schupbach led the way for BGSU with three shot attempts, while Fleak, Garr and Ross all had one shot apiece on the night.
BGSU (0-1-0) will return to the pitch for competition this Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24, as the Falcons will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face off with the No. 7 nationally ranked Michigan Wolverines.

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 MAC) opened up their 2014 campaign in winning fashion as they downed the visiting St. Bonaventure Bonnies by the score of 1-0 in front of the home fans at UB Stadium. The win marks UB head coach Shawn Burke's first career coaching victory.
"We had a great crowd for this season opening win" said first year head coach Shawn Burke. "Our girls came out a little nervous but once we got those nerves out of our system, I thought we put our style of play out there and executed it perfectly. This victory was very pleasing as from top to bottom it was a complete team effort."
Applying heavy pressure throughout most of the second half, the Bulls attack was able to put one past the Bonnies goalkeeper Christina Sarokon in the 69th minute. Megan Abman fed a crossing pass to Celina Carrero who made a quick move and found a streaking Julia Benati to the right of the keeper for the goal. Benati took the Carrero pass and buried the ball in the lower left corner for the game-winning tally in her first career game.
With the time winding down, the Bonnies had their best chance of the night to tie the score at one but Laura Dougall made a leaping save and punched the ball over the cross bar to preserve the Bulls 1-0 win.
Early on the Bonnies controlled the pace of play as they had multiple chances to get on the board in the first 25 minutes of action. A pair of Bonnies shots were turned aside by Dougall to preserve the scoreless contest. In the 38th minute, the Bulls had their best chance of the half to break the tie as Benati got loose and fired a shot from 30 yards out that rang off the cross bar and was cleared by the St. Bonaventure defense.
The Bulls opened up the second half with multiple great chances to score but they were unsuccessful. Andrea Niper fed Megan Giesen in front of the net but her strike from just inside the box soared high of the goal. Just three minutes later, Katie Roberts had her low shot pushed wide by the diving keeper. Kassidy Kidd also had a great chance from in close in the 55th minute but her shot was denied from in close.
The UB defense was strong all night long as the group of Angel Hart, Jackie Hall, Dana Lytle and Sophie Therien held the Bonnies without a shot on goal for a 81 minute stretch. The 81 minute drough for the Bonnies lasted from the four minute mark of the opening half to the 85 minute of the second half when Dougall was asked to make a save on a Lauren Hill shot.
"Our staple is always going to be our backline and they were tremendous tonight for us," stated Burke. "Laura Dougall was not asked to make any spectacular saves because they did a nice job in front of her."
For the game, the Bulls held the 18-9 advanbtage in shots including the 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The corner kicks were even at three for the contest. The clean sheet for Dougall was the first of her career.
The Bulls will return to UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as they will host cross town rival and Big Four foe Canisius College at 12:00 pm.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team opened up the 2014 regular season in winning fashion, soaring past Fordham University 2-0 Friday evening, Aug. 22 at Scicluna Field. Starting the 20th season in program history, EMU improves to an all-time mark of 11-5-4 in season openers.
Last year's Mid-American Conference players of the year scored the two goals to propel the Eagles to victory; reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year Angela Vultaggio found the back of the net in the 25th minute, and 2013 MAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Emily Dzik added an insurance goal in the second half. Junior Molli Krick and sophomore Madison Hirsch set up their teammates for the pair of goals. Meanwhile, Megan McCabe and the rest of the EMU backline secured the shutout with two saves by the starting keeper.
EMU out-shot Fordham 10-8, including 4-2 in shots on goal. Vultaggio took a game-high four shots while Fordham's Kate McDonnel attempted three shots to lead the Rams. The Eagles controlled the ball for the majority of the game as well as having a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks; the only Fordham corner happened in the waning second of the match.
Fordham started out on the offensive attack, firing a shot on goal in the second minute of the contest. The attempted score found the gloves of McCabe for the first save of the season. The Rams continued to blast shots towards the goal, but they missed wide of the target as the game remained scoreless.
After the early threat by Fordham, the Eagles' nerves settled as they took control of possession. Looking for a prime opportunity to strike, Eastern found a chance in the 25th minute and did not waste it. Krick found Vultaggio on a run down the center of the field. As the keeper came to the top of the box, the senior picked her spot and placed it with perfection in the back of the net to give the Green and White the 1-0 advantage.
For the remainder of the first half, neither team had a legitimate scoring opportunity as the match remained a one-goal difference after 45 minutes. Each team took four shots in the first half, including one on goal with Eastern's shot finding the net. Only one corner kick took place in the opening half, belonging to the Eagles.
With a one goal lead, the EMU backline clamped down for the second half, holding the Rams to just one shot on goal and no further legitimate scoring chances. In the 67th minute, the Green and White doubled its lead after a beautiful cross from Hirsch scampered through the traffic to find Dzik on the back post. The wise veteran knew exactly what to do with the ball, placing the ball where out of the reach of the Fordham keeper for the goal. Despite the two-goal lead, the defense continued to hold strong to secure the shutout and Eastern's first victory of the 2014 campaign.
EMU Head Coach Scott Hall made substitutions throughout the match as 17 Eagles saw minutes, including the debuts of freshmen Chanel Vani and Alex Wilbanks.
The Eagles will hope to keep the momentum going as they return to Scicluna Field Sunday, Aug. 24, to close out the season-opening weekend. EMU hosts Indiana University, a 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifier, for a 1 p.m. matchup.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Miami University soccer team opened the 2014 season on a high note, topping Purdue, 1-0, in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup on Friday night.
The RedHawks (1-0) took advantage of an own goal in the 44th minute as Danielle Wiseman posted a shutout in her first-career start in goal.
“Any time you can get a win over a Big Ten team, you’ve done alright,” head coach Bobby Kramig said. “Purdue is a fine team and tonight was a good, evenly played game. I’m proud of our kids, they worked hard and played well together. Our bench played terrific. We know going into the season that our bench would be a strength and it made the difference tonight by wearing them down.”
Miami territorially controlled most of the play in the first half, outshooting Purdue by a 7-3 count. Still, it appeared the contest would go into halftime scoreless until there was 1:20 remaining. The RedHawks put the ball behind the Boilermaker defense and Amy Malone narrowly missed finished the play. The ball found a Purdue defender, but Malone’s pressure forced an errant clearance attempt that went off a Purdue foot and into the net for an own goal that gave MU a 1-0 lead at the break.
“The goal was the result of good pressure by us,” Kramig said. “We got in behind their defense and played a great ball that Amy Malone nearly got to the end of. She forced Purdue’s defender into a rushed clearance and it went in.”
Purdue fired three early shots in the second half, but all of them went wide. However, Miami went on the offensive from there and nearly went up 2-0 in the 56th minute when Chloe Knue fired a shot towards an open net, but an oncoming Purdue defender got to the ball at the goal line to keep it a one-goal contest.
After only taking seven shots, none of which were on goal, over the first 64 minutes of play, the Boilermakers started to press the attack towards the end of the second half. Purdue fired eight shots over the final 26 minutes. Despite the extra numbers on the attack, the Red and White defense kept the Boilermakers from finding the equalizer to post. That win is Miami’s first victory in four tries (1-2-1) over Purdue.
“Congratulations to Danielle on getting the shutout,” Kramig said. “She’s been a great teammate for the last three years and I’m absolutely thrilled that she’s getting a chance to shine. She played well tonight.”
In her first collegiate start, Wiseman turned aside all four shots she faced to post her first-career shutout. The late Purdue surge gave it a slight 15-13 advantage in shot attempts while the Boilermakers also had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Miami closes out its stint at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup on Sunday when it takes on Butler at 11 a.m.
Northern Illinois
Box Score
NORMAL, Ill. – Freshman goalkeeper Amy Annala (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a sensational Huskie debut on Friday evening in the 2014 season opener for the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team at Illinois State.
Annala made several incredible stops in the first half and finished with 11 saves, but her efforts weren’t enough as the Huskies dropped the match to the Redbirds, 4-1.
“I thought Amy was outstanding in her regular season debut,” NIU head coach John Ross said. “She made some fantastic saves and really kept us in the game in the first half.”
In a match played in searing heat and humidity, both teams started quickly. Illinois State hit the crossbar in the opening minute; immediately at the other end, junior forward Nicole Gobbo was inches away from scoring the first goal of the season for NIU.
Then Annala made the first of her many tremendous saves, rushing out and blocking a shot on Illinois State’s three-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Rachel Tejada.
But the Redbirds did take the lead not long after when Paige Jarsombeck opened the scoring for the home team after five minutes.
Carrying a constant offensive threat, Illinois State scored three more times in the first half.
Tejada, Jarsombeck and Ali Farkos goals in rapid succession gave the Redbirds a 4-0 advantage at halftime. The Huskies also had a few chances in the opening period, with the most notable coming when junior forward Maggie Renfro (Chaska, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) saw her powerful strike from 20 yards saved.
NIU improved greatly in the second half, pressing well and creating a few scoring opportunities while also holding the defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Redbirds at bay. Senior midfielder Ashley Neubeck (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) scored for the Huskies from close range after some tricky wing play by freshman forward Marisa Knott (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) created the opening.

Box Score
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ohio University women's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit in the second half, but would fall in its season opener in double overtime to Butler, 3-2, at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Ind., Friday evening.
"I think going into the game the girls' spirits were high," second-year head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "I've been so proud of them through the preseason on how hard they've worked and we were ready to play. Butler is a very good team and they had a great season last year and they returned a ton of starters. We had a very big fight on our hands and we knew that we were going to."
After a half of scoreless play, Butler (1-0-0) struck in the 67th minute when Kelly Mahoney scored on a header from the left side of the six-yard box on a corner kick. Less than a minute later, the Bulldogs went up 2-0 on a goal by Elise Kotsakis.
The Bobcats did not back down and in the 76th minute, senior Liz Finley scored on a shot over the head of the goalkeeper to cut the Bulldog lead in half. Senior Tonya Frasik was credited the assist on the goal.
Ohio continued to attack and in the 80th minute freshman Allie Curry, with an assist from fellow freshman Kelley Zebrowski, placed the ball inside the left post for the equalizer, tying the game at 2-2 and helping send the game into extra time.
"We played a tight first half and figured out how they were going to play," Rodgers said. "In the second half I actually felt like leading up to their goal we actually had a couple of really good chances. We were a little shell shocked and a little down because we had just given up a goal when we had a play. This is the resilience from last year and we came back. We scored two awesome goals. It was awesome for our senior to score and even more impressive that a freshman scored the tying goal."
In the second overtime, Butler's Mahoney would score her second goal of the game off a header in the 104th minute, giving the Bulldogs the 3-2 victory.
Overall, the Bobcats registered 11 shots, with Curry leading the team with three. Finley and senior Annie Beard both had two shots apiece.
Senior starting goalie Nicole Amari allowed three goals and recorded five saves.
"We fought really hard the rest of the game, but they were just a little bit better than us in extra time and scored in the second extra time," Rodgers said. "The team is disappointed that we lost and the girls are disappointed because they put a lot into that game and fought back. To me that shows the expectations of our program and the expectations of our girls and I'm proud of them for that. I know they are not satisfied and we're going to be ready to give a great effort on Sunday."
The Bobcats (0-1-0) return to action for the conclusion of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup on Sunday when Ohio takes on host school Purdue (0-0-0). Competition is set to kick-off at 2 p.m. at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex.
