Akron equals best start in program history win over Morehead State

AKRON, Ohio – Sparked by four starters scoring in double-figures, the Akron women's basketball team equaled its best start (7-0) in program history registering a 89-61 victory over Morehead State (3-5) Friday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips equaled the 7-0 start by Akron's 1974-75 squad with the triumph, while also garnering the Zips' 400th victory all-time.
Junior Anita Brown (Warren, Ohio) led all Akron players in scoring with 19 points. She added seven rebounds to go along with one assist.
Sophomore Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio) recorded a career-high 18 points along with three assists on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-for-7 beyond the arc.
Senior Sina King (Waterford, Ohio) was close behind with 14 points, six rebounds and one block.
Junior DiAndra Gibson (Ravenna, Ohio) pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds, one off her career-best mark, to go along with six points.
Akron's bench was responsible for 22 of its total points compared to five bench points for Morehead State. Junior Katie Nunan (Fairmont, W. Va.) and freshman Lauren Hung (Waterford, Mich.) led those efforts with seven and six points, respectively.
The Zips shot 46.1 percent (35-of-76) from the field and 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from behind the arc en route to the victory, while also scoring 40 of their points inside the paint.
Akron outrebounded the Eagles on the boards, 50-43, including 21-15 on the offensive end. The Zips also notched three blocks in the game, while dishing out 18 assists.
Akron forced the Morehead State into 22 turnovers and converted those miscues into a 31-11 advantage on points off turnovers.
The Zips and Eagles started the game out exchanging baskets and the lead early. Gibson hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc to give Akron their second lead, 9-7, with 15:29 to play in the first half.
Akron gained some momentum and went on an 8-0 run. The Zips connected on three straight field goals including a three-pointer from King.
The Zips increased their scoring run to 13-5 (9:45) after Hung hit another three-pointer for the Zips.
Akron's defense held the Eagles scoreless for over four minutes near the end of the first half before Shay Steele ended the scoring drought with a lay-up with 2:32 left in the half.
Akron started moving the ball inside to start the final 20 minutes. Freshman Kerri McMahan (Novi, Mich.) stole the ball at half court and hit her third lay-up of the half at the 16:22 mark. The Zips scored their first 4-of-5 baskets inside the paint.
The Zips continued their success on offensive and outscored 23-14 the Eagles halfway through the second half to extend their lead to 27, 70-43.
Akron led by as many as 32 points en route to its 89-61 win over the Eagles.
The Zips return to action on Dec. 15 with a 7 p.m. tilt at Bethune-Cookman.
