The 2014 Marathon MAC Football Championship Game will feature the East Division Champion Bowling Green Falcons against the West Division Champion Northern Illinois Huskies on Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 pm ET in front of a national television audience on ESPN2.  This contest will mark the 18th annual championship game for the MAC and will mark the 11th neutral site game at Ford Field in downtown Detroit, Mich.

Bowling Green (7-4, 5-2 in the MAC) clinched the East Division with a 30-20 win over Kent State on Wednesday, Nov. 12.  Bowling Green won the East Division for the second consecutive season.  The Falcons became the first MAC East back-to-back champion since Miami (2003-04).  Last season Bowling Green defeated No. 14 ranked Northern Illinois, 47-27, on Dec. 6, 2013.

In the West Division, Northern Illinois (10-2, 7-1 in the MAC) clinched with a 31-21 win at Western Michigan on Friday afternoon.  The Huskies win marks the fifth consecutive West Division title for the program.  Northern Illinois owns the tie-breaker with Toledo after a 27-24 win over the Rockets on Nov. 11.

Last year’s Marathon MAC Football Championship game witnessed the East Division Champion Bowling Green defeated No. 14 ranked West Champion Northern Illinois, 47-27.  The Falcons win was the first football championship since 1992 and ended the Huskies perfect 12-0 regular season record.  Bowling Green accepted an invitation to the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, while Northern Illinois received an invite from the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

The MAC has long been associated with the Detroit area, and played in its first-ever college football game at Ford Field as Toledo faced Boston College in the 2002 Motor City Bowl. This year’s Marathon MAC Football Championship game marks the conference’s 11th year at Ford Field for a neutral site championship football game. Ford Field is home to the NFL’s Detroit Lions, and is a premiere sports venue that has hosted many major sporting events, including the 2006 Super Bowl, the 2009 NCAA® Men’s Basketball Final Four® and the 2010 NCAA® Men’s Frozen Four.
