MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - It was the final home game for the three seniors on the Central Michigan women's soccer team.
For one of those seniors, Laura Gosse, it was quite memorable.
Gosse scored two goals in leading CMU to a 3-0 Mid-American Conference victory over Ohio Friday at the CMU Soccer Complex.
The two goals brought Gosse's season total to eight and her career total to 21, both among the best in school history.
"It's good to get a solid win with not only one goal, but three (as a team), and I think we ended well for it being my last home game and it will definitely be one to be remembered," said Gosse, who entered Friday's match tied for fourth in the MAC in goal scoring. "I think the main focus is to get the W first so obviously I want to contribute.
"I would love to move up the list but it wouldn't be for the accolade, it would be for the purpose of scoring and making the MAC Tournament."
It was CMU's second straight victory and its third in its last five starts. The Chippewas are 5-11-1, 3-6-0 MAC. They play a league match at Kent, 9-5-3, 4-3-2, on Sunday. The Flashes defeated Toledo, 3-0, on Friday.
Sophomore Eliza Van de Kerkhove closed the scoring with a penalty-kick goal in the 75th minute. Christen Chiesa and Samantha Maher each picked up an assist in the game.
Sophomore Heather Laeufer posted her second consecutive shutout, improving to 3-3-0. The Chippewas' last two wins have come by a combined score of 6-0.
"I think we're playing really well, I think we are finding our rhythm and it's good to see our hard work pay off," Laeufer said. "We are very confident. We are looking forward to building on this and keep building and we always take it one game at a time so we are looking forward to Kent on Sunday."
"The team is really defending very well and I think it's all three lines," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Particularly the midfield line in front of the back line really has a very good rhythm and I think Heather has done a good job with taking her (playing) opportunity and running with it.
"Right now we feel like we've taken care of our business today and on we go to Kent."
Gosse's 21 career goals are fifth on CMU's all-time list. Stephanie Martin (2006-09) leads with 26. Gosse's eight goals this season tie her for the sixth-best season in school history.
"She had a very good night tonight," McGahey said. "Few players get to close out the last home game of their senior year with that kind of moment and I'm very, very proud of her."

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women’s soccer team picked up three valuable points in the conference standings, defeating visiting Bowling Green 2-0 Friday at the WMU Soccer Complex. Junior Irene Young and senior Ariana Donahue scored second half goals and the Bronco defense recorded its 10th shutout of the season to lead WMU to victory.
The win upped Western Michigan’s overall record to 10-6-1 and 4-4-1 in Mid-American Conference play. It is the second-straight season WMU has reached double-digits in the win column under third-year head coach Nate Norman. The Broncos are 5-2-0 at home this season.
“I am so proud of our team,” Norman said. “I loved the effort and the determination today. Everyone on the field had a very good performance and it was great to see us finish our chances.”
Western Michigan dominated the entire 90 minutes, as the game was played in WMU’s offensive half nearly the entire match. The Broncos rattled off 26 shots, including 16 on goal, both of which were season highs.
Young led the attack, firing five shots and landing four on goal. After the two teams battled through a scoreless first half, Young finally found the back of the net for Western Michigan in the 56th minute for her second goal of the year. Senior Aubrey Sudomier made a run down the right side and thread a pass on point to Young rushing into the box. Young’s initial shot was batted away by BG goalkeeper Lauren Cadel, but the Bronco forward was there to finish her own rebound.
Donahue sealed the victory for the Brown & Gold in the 86th minute, finishing her third goal of the season. Senior Nicole Hatcliffe played a ball across the box from the right and Donahue poked it in on the backside.
Bronco redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Heber only faced two shots and needed to make only one save early in the first half. Heber improved her season record between the posts to 7-2-1 and notched her seventh career shutout.
Western Michigan closes out the regular season with two remaining games at the WMU Soccer Complex. The Broncos return to their home pitch Sunday, hosting cross-state rival Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. Northern Illinois visits Kalamazoo in the regular-season finale, Thursday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m.

KENT, Ohio- The Kent State women's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Toledo on Friday night at Zoeller Field. Jenna Hellstrom opened the scoring with a goal in the first-half and Stephanie Haugh added two goals for the Golden Flashes.
With the win, Kent State improved to 9-5-3 overall and 4-3-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The loss dropped Toledo to 6-9-1 overall and 3-6-0 in the league. The Golden Flashes turned in a great all around effort and enjoyed a 14-8 advantage in shots.
Hellstom delivered for Kent State in the 29th minute to put the Flashes up 1-0. She received a pass from Karli Paracca from the middle of the 18-yard box on the right side and drove a shot past diving Toledo goalkeeper Sam Tiongson. Hellstrom's goal was her sixth of the season and she is Kent State's leader in goals and points.
The Golden Flashes played well on the defensive end and goalie Stephanie Senn was only forced to make one save. Toledo's best scoring opportunity was in the second half at the 33:25 mark off of a corner kick. Senn was able to save a shot off of a rebound by Kiersten Johnson.

BUFFALO, NY – Senior forward Katie Roberts had a flair for the dramatic on Friday night in front of the home fans at UB Stadium as she buried the game-winning penalty kick goal in the first overtime to lift UB over Ball State, 2-1. The penalty kick goal for Roberts was her second goal of the game and her fifth game-winning marker of the season.
UB improves to 11-2-3 overall and 7-0-2 in the MAC with the win while Ball State falls to 9-5-2 overall and 5-4-0 in MAC play. With the win, the Bulls extended their conference unbeaten streak to nine matches (7-0-2) and currently sit in first place in the MAC east with 23 points. The Bulls can clinch the MAC regular season title with a win over the Miami (OH) RedHawks on Sunday afternoon at noon at UB Stadium.
"The girls showed a lot of poise today as they didn't allow themselves to get rattled after going down 1-0," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We played well and had the will to fight back and earn a well deserved three points. The play of Katie Roberts, Celina Carrero and Angel Hart was simply amazing tonight."
With the momentum and the wind at their back to start the overtime period, still knotted at one, the Bulls knew they needed to jump out quick and that is exactly what they did. In the 92nd minute of action, the tenacious Buffalo attack earned a penalty kick after a shot was knocked down with a hand in the 18-yard box by a Ball State defender. With the game on the line, Roberts calmly stepped up and buried the ball in the low right corner of the goal to give UB the 2-1 win in front of the home crowd.
The win for UB was their second overtime victory of the season with Roberts netting the game-winning goal in both contests. Roberts won the game for Buffalo over Ohio, 1-0, in double overtime earlier this year.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the contest in the 44th minute of play as the Ball State forward and Laura Dougall had a collision in the box that was called as a foul on Dougall, awarding the Cardinals with a penalty kick. On the ensuing PK, Orla Travers-Gillespie beat a diving Dougall to the right corner of the net to give her squad the 1-0 lead heading to the locker room for halftime.
However, the Bulls offense came alive in the second half as they began creating chances all over the field. Following a great defensive play by Jackie Hall to save a goal with a blocked shot on an empty net, the Bulls transitioned and Celina Carrero took a blast of a shot that was barely tipped over the top of the net by the Ball State keeper.
Less than five minutes later, Roberts nearly tied the game for the Bulls with a shot from 25-yards out that rang off the cross bar and out, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Bulls luck however changed in the 70th minute as Roberts finally was awarded for her hard play with a pretty goal. Andrea Niper started the play for the Bulls as she headed the ball forward and then found a streaking Carrero down the right sideline. Carrero beat a pair of defenders and placed a perfect cross into the box to Roberts' feet and she deposited the ball in the back of the net, beating the lunging keeper to the low left corner of the goal.
The unsung hero for the Bulls was senior captain Megan Giesen, who won nearly every header for UB from start to finish in the middle of the field. Giesen's relentless effort in the midfield for the Bulls helped created numerous offensive opportunities for the UB attack.
With a pair of goals tonight, Roberts moved into 10th place in program history for goals in a career with 20. She also currently sits in 12th place on the all-time points list with 47.
Once again, the back line for the Bulls stood strong and limited the Cardinals to only three shots on goal for the contest. It marked the 11th time this season that the UB defense has limited the opposing team to five shots on goal or less. Leading the way tonight were Hall and Angel Hart. That duo played all 92 minutes and battled hard to protect the UB net, allowing just a penalty kick goal for the game.
Roberts led all players with five shots while Carrero finished with three shots and her fourth assist of the season. Julia Benati, Giesen and Niper each finished with two shots in the victory for the Bulls.
In goal, Dougall finished off her night with three saves while her counterpart was asked to make seven in the losing effort. Dougall improved to 11-1-3 and owns a goals-against average of 0.38 and a save percentage of .910 for the season.
For the game, UB held the 19-10 advantage in shots including the dominant 11-5 edge in the second half. The Cardinals held the 5-3 advantage in corner kicks in the loss.
Following the match, Roberts was awarded the "Player of the Match" award by the UB coaching staff after another dominant offensive effort for the Bulls with a pair of markers and the game-winning tally. Roberts was all over the field as she finished with a game-high five shots including three on goal for the Bulls.
