AKRON, Ohio -- Sarah Sivic's penalty kick with seven seconds remaining in regulation was the deciding factor for Akron in a gutsy 1-0 victory over Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Sivic took the PK for the Zips after Northern was called for a foul near the top of the box in the 90th minute, following a corner kick from Karin Norman. The ball bounced around among a host of players from both teams, as the Zips tried to finish the corner and the Huskies tried to clear it and force overtime.
As the dust cleared the whistle was blown on NIU, and Sivic found the back of the net with just seven ticks left on the clock. All 11 Huskies lined up across midfield in an attempt to supply the equalizer in the final seconds, but ran out of time. Sivic's goal was her third of the season.
With the result, UA improves to 6-7-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Northern Illinois, previously unbeaten in league play and atop the MAC West standings, moves to 5-7-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the conference. Akron snapped a five-match unbeaten streak for the Huskies.
Klaire Adee played all 90 minutes and had three saves for the Zips in goal, recording her second shutout of the year. Sivic was the first player to score on NIU goalkeeper Amy Annala in 362 minutes.
Aside from the PK, Akron posted three other shots on goal for the match, all from Lani Smith. The senior's best chance to score came in the 17th minute when she challenged Annala one-on-one at the top of the box, chipping it past the keeper but it was wide just right of the goal.
Defensively, the Zips did well to hold off Northern for the day, allowing six shots, only three of which were on goal. NIU earned five corner kicks, including four in the first half, and it threatened to score off one in the 40th minute. Gwen Sabo put the ball in play for the Huskies, and a header from Haley Cummings hit off the crossbar and went straight down, but Adee was there to protect the net.
Akron returns to the field next weekend when it hits the road for the first time this month. The Zips will travel to Toledo to take on the Rockets on Friday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m., then head on to Central Michigan. UA and CMU will face off on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.

BUFFALO, NY – The State University of New York, Buffalo women's soccer team (8-2-3, 4-0-2 MAC) stayed unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play on Sunday afternoon as they battled the Western Michigan Broncos to a 1-1 draw at UB Stadium. With the tie, UB now sits in first place in the MAC east standings with 14 points and set a program record for the best start in MAC play, 4-0-2.
"It was a gutty performance today for us," said first-year head coach Shawn Burke. "It's really hard to play two double overtime games in a weekend. You can see it, the girls were clearly tired this afternoon but they worked together to earn a point. The girls really dug deep and fought to earn the tie today."
After entering as a sub early on in the opening half, Megan Abman made an immediate impact for the Bulls as she netted her second goal of the season in the 35th minute. Kassidy Kidd started the play with a perfect cross to Abman who calmly buried the ball in the lower right corner of the net. Kidd is now tied for the team lead with three assists and has five points in her last seven matches for the Bulls.
Following a defensive first half by both teams, only three shots each, the two sides opened it up offensively in the second half.
In the 50th minute, Alex Lambert almost scored her first goal of her career but her attempt was pushed aside by the Broncos keeper after a nice cross from Katie Roberts.
After early pressure by the Bulls, the Broncos got on the board to tie the game at one in the 68th minute. Ariana Donahue took a perfect cross from Irene Young and beat the UB keeper to the right corner.
Down the stretch of the second half, Laura Dougall came up big for the Bulls as she made back-to-back diving saves to force overtime. Dougall stopped Aubrey Sudomier with nine minutes left to play and then robbed Young.
The Bulls dominated the overtime periods as they held the 5-0 advantage in shots but they weren't able to break through with the winning goal. Julia Benati had a great chance in the second overtime but her blast of a shot was turned away by Stephanie Heber. In the 104th minute, Courtney Mann had a great chance to end it for UB but her shot was saved, preserving the tie for both squads.
For the match, Western Michigan held the slim 17-15 advantage in shots and 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Roberts and Rachel Cook led the Bulls with three shots each while Benati had a pair of shots on goal.
Dougall finished the game with six saves while her counterpart Heber finished with a game-high nine in the tie. Dougall now owns a record of 8-2-3 on the season with a goals-against average of 0.39.
Following the match, Andrea Niper was awarded the "Player of the Match" award by the UB coaching staff after a strong performance in the midfield for the Bulls. Niper was strong all afternoon long defensively after entering early in the match.
When asked about the play of Niper, head coach Shawn Burke stated, "I was very pleased with the effort of Andrea Niper today as she was asked to play out of position. After Jackie Hall went out, the team didn't miss a beat because Niper was able to slide in and play in place of Courtney Mann who moved to the center back position."

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team capped off a perfect homecoming weekend with a 2-0 victory over rival Central Michigan University Sunday afternoon, Oct. 12, at Scicluna Field. The Mid-American Conference win moved the Eagles into the top spot of the MAC West Division with a 8-4-1 (4-2-0 MAC) record, while the Chippewas drop to 3-10-1 (1-5-0 MAC) on the season.
The EMU soccer game was the first Eagles Unite game of the 2014-15 EMU Athletics season. Coaches and student-athletes from multiple sports were in attendance to cheer the Eagles to victory.
Redshirt-senior midfielder Chelsie Oddan scored the first goal of her career, while junior Megan Trapp added a header off the bench late in the first half for the Green and White. Angela Vultaggio found Oddan for her career goal, and Rachel Washburn used the corner kick to assist Trapp for the sophomore's second career assist. Guarding the goal, keeper Megan McCabe (8-3-1) produced a clean sheet for the Eagles, making three saves for her sixth shutout of the season and 11th of her career.
The EMU backline of Washburn, Emily Dzik, Hallee Kansman and Marisa Kozikowski limited Central Michigan on quality scoring opportunities as the Chippewas attempted only eight shots throughout the 90 minutes of play. Emily Cooksey took a team-high three shots, while Heather Laeufer (1-2-0) stopped a pair of shots in between the posts on the defensive side of the pitch.
The Eagles struck their first goal, scoring in the 22nd minute. From the left side of the 18-yard box, Vultaggio moved the ball to Oddan at the top of the scoring area, where the midfielder rifled a blast into the upper left corner of the net to give the Green and White the early advantage.
With the less than eight minutes remaining in the opening half, Eastern doubled its lead with a header from Trapp. Taking the corner kick, Washburn sent in a perfect ball that connected with the head of the junior Eagle, who directed the shot into the goal for her second score of the season. The goal brought EMU's advantage to 2-0 heading into halftime.
While the stats may not tell the story, the Green and White controlled the first half. EMU tallied five shots compared to just three for the Chippewas. Each goalkeeper made one save with two Eastern shots on target finding the net. The Eagles also took three corner kicks, scoring on one of the set pieces, while CMU had one opportunity from the corner in the opening 45 minutes.
Each team attempted five shots in the second half with two of Eastern's strikes clanking off the crossbar. Preserving the shutout, McCabe made a brilliant save late in the contest. A CMU shot looked out of reach as it rose to the upper right corner of the net; nonetheless, McCabe leaped to the corner with an outstretched hand to swat the ball away, drawing a huge applause from the crowd as the 2-0 shutout victory was kept intact.
The Eagles will stay at Scicluna Field next weekend for their final two home games of the regular season. In the first of two cross-divisional contests, Eastern hosts Kent State University in a 4 p.m. MAC East showdown. Two days later, the 2014 soccer senior class will be recognized as EMU squares off against Ohio University on Senior Day, Oct. 19. The Eagles and Bobcats will begin the Sunday afternoon match at 1 p.m.

ATHENS, Ohio – The Miami University soccer team scored a goal in both halves to hand rival Ohio a 2-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday’s victory extends the RedHawks’ (10-2-1, 4-1-1 Mid-American) unbeaten streak to five matches (4-0-1) as they move into second place in the league standings with 13 points.
“Sunday games are very tough,” head coach Bobby Kramig said. “They take a physical and mental toll, but we played a disciplined game and stayed organized all 90 minutes. This was a good professional effort and we did what we needed to do to win the game. I give a lot of credit to Ohio, they are considerably improved over where they have been a couple years ago. They competed hard the whole game and made it hard on us today.”
MU got the offense going early thanks to a set-piece goal by Maggie Scott in the third minute of play. The freshman settled down Kelsey Dinges’ free kick feed and sent it into the net for her third goal of the year. That strike was the lone tally of a strong 45 minutes by the Red and White, where they outshot the Bobcats (6-8, 3-3 MAC) by an 11-4 margin.
“That was a brilliant header by Maggie,” Kramig said. “We kind of wrong footed her on the serve, but she got her feet under her and finished. That was a first-class goal.”
The possession still favored Miami for most of the second half, with the shots 7-3 in favor of the RedHawks. However, the gap remained at one goal well into the end of regulation. The MU bench ended up creating an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Jenna Weiner settled down Chloe Knue’s feed to the left side and guided the ball into an open net to secure the win.
Final shots favored the Red and White by a decisive 18-7 margin while corner kicks were 6-5 in favor of the RedHawks. Vic Maniaci made her sixth-consecutive start and made four saves to record her fourth solo shutout of the year.
The RedHawks return to the pitch on Friday when they host Northern Illinois at 4 p.m.

KENT, Ohio -- Victoria Jacobs scored the only goal and Alyssa Heintschel recorded her first collegiate shutout Sunday as the Ball State soccer team earned a 1-0 win at Kent State.
It was a key Mid-American Conference road win against a Kent State team that had previously lost only once at home this season. The Cardinals improved to 7-4-2 (3-3 MAC) and remained in the middle of the league race. Kent State dropped to 7-4-3 (2-2-2 MAC).
“I am very pleased with the way we rebounded from some adversity the past two games,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “I couldn’t have asked for more spirit from our players. We showed some true characteristics of a winning team.”
Jacobs scored early in the 34th minute when she headed in a corner kick off the foot of Leah Mattingly. It was Jacobs’ first goal of the season and the seventh of her career. She became the 13th different Ball State player to score a goal this season.
Defensively, the Cardinals posted their sixth shutout of the year. Heintschel, a freshman from Oregon, Ohio, earned the start and made seven saves to keep the Golden Flashes off the scoreboard. She had previously combined for a shutout with Brooke Dennis, but Sunday marked her first solo shutout.
“Alyssa did a tremendous job in goal,” Roberts said. “She collected crosses dominantly and aggressively. It was a first-class performance.”
The Cardinals faced a 17-7 deficit in total shots but kept Kent State off the board. Gabby Veldman recorded four of the Ball State shots and placed two on goal.
With Sunday’s game, Ball State surpassed the halfway point of the conference schedule. The Cardinals return home next weekend for a pair of games, starting Friday at 3:30 p.m. with a rematch of last year’s MAC Tournament championship game against Western Michigan.

BOWLING GREEN, OH – Toledo freshman Bethany Thomas ripped a shot past the Bowling Green goalkeeper in the 77th minute of the play to lift UT past the Falcons on Sunday afternoon. The 1-0 victory sends the Rockets to 5-8-1 (2-4 Mid-American Conference) for the season.
Toledo dominated most of the contest, registering a staggering 28-5 shot advantage, 20 of which came in the second half. UT posted a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Midfielder Isa Echeverri led the attack with eight shots, three on goal, while sophomore Kiersten Johnson followed with five blasts of her own. Thomas was one of five Toledo players with at least two shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Tiongson was called upon for just one save while Toledo put 14 shots on goal making it a busy day for BGSU keeper Lauren Cadel. The freshman from Ontario single handedly kept the Falcons alive as she recorded 13 saves to run her season total to 99 stops.
The Rockets wasted no time applying the pressure as they nearly jumped out to a quick lead after senior defender Kirsten Catloth found Echeverri in the box off of a set piece but the redshirt freshman’s header sailed just over the cross bar.
Toledo had another chance in the 33rd minute as Johnson spilt a pair of Falcon defenders and slipped through the back line for an open shot but Cadel was there for the stop.
The second half was more of the same for the Rockets offensive attack. Multiple quality chances kept Cadel and the BGSU defenders on their toes as the wave of UT forwards continue to press.
Echeverri had a pair of great chances beginning with a blast from 25 yards out which made Cadel complete a diving save in the 55th minute and then again put a shot on goal in the 58th minute on a free kick.
Toledo finally broke through on a corner kick from defender Megan Connor. The senior captain drove a ball into the box and found fellow senior Alexis Tice and Tice’s header bounced to the feet of Thomas who buried it in the back of the net.
The Rockets return to the friendly confines of Scott Park on Friday Oct. 17th as they host Akron with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m.
