YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team (7-4-1, 3-2-0 MAC) picked up its seventh victory of the season, taking down the University of Toledo (4-8-1, 1-4-0) in a narrow 1-0 victory at Scicluna Field Friday, Oct. 10.

Senior Bianca Rossi tallied her fourth goal of the season, finding the net with less than four minutes to play to score the lone goal of the contest and Marisa Kozikowski added her third assist of the season. The senior forward led the Green and White with four shots, two of which landed on goal, while Angela Vultaggio had three shots, one of which was on goal. The EMU defense picked up their fifth shutout of the season, while junior Megan McCabe stopped four shots on net. The Eagles controlled the ball for the majority of the contest, outshooting Toledo 10-2 in the first half and 13-11 for the entire 90 minutes of play.

For the Rockets, Geri Siudzinski paced the offense with two shots on goal, while Hannah Scafaria landed one on net and goalkeeper Sam Tiongson saved two shots for UT.

Eastern had the first good look of the game in the 11th minute. Vultaggio found Rossi in the middle of the box, but the shot missed wide. Nearly 10 minutes later, Hallee Kansman had an opportunity on a set piece from Molli Krick. However, the shot was blocked at the line by a UT defender as the game remained scoreless.

With over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Rockets searched out a quality scoring chance. From the top of the box, Kiersten Johnson banged a shot off the crossbar. After 45 minutes, the match stood at a 0-0 standstill. The Green and White registered three shots on goal while the EMU backline did not allow a shot on target by UT. Each team had opportunities to score on corners as Eastern held a 3-2 advantage.

Just two minutes into the second half, Toledo attempted its first shot on goal, but McCabe was ready to make the save. Five minutes later, the junior goalkeeper made a diving stop to maintain the tie game. As the clock ticked down and action moved to the other side of the pitch, Rossi made a solid pass across the box to Chelsie Oddan, whose blast ricocheted off the post and out of bounds, leading to a UT goal kick.

The contest remained a clean sheet until 3:34 to go when the Eagles found the back of the net. Sprinting down the left side of the field, Kozikowski placed a beautiful ball in the box to Rossi. The Eastern senior did the rest, connecting the ball with the back of her right heel and directing it into the right side of the net past a stretching TIongson. With the 86th-minute goal, EMU held on to a 1-0 lead; the Green and White survived a shot off the post with less than two minutes remaining to claim the shutout victory.

The Green and White will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 12 for an Eagles Unite match against Central Michigan. First kick from Scicluna Field is set for 1 p.m.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Jennifer Gassman scored in the second overtime Friday, lifting the Central Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-0 Mid-American Conference victory over Bowling Green.

The win, CMU's first in league play, snapped a four-game losing streak. The Chippewas are 3-9-1 overall, 1-4-0 league. Bowling Green is 2-10-0, 1-4-0.

"I'm very proud of our team," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "I thought it was a good performance, I thought we invested a lot and we're certainly well deserving of the result."

The Chippewas outshot the Falcons, 21-15, and had eight corners to the Falcons' one. Sophomore Heather Laeufer, making her first conference appearance, posted her first shutout. She made four saves, three of which came in the first half.

"I think the pass/kicking plays was absolutely outstanding," McGahey said. "Heather Laeufer made her MAC debut tonight and did an excellent job."

On the game-winning combination, Kaelyn Korte played the ball over the Falcon defenders and Gassman chased it down, chipping it over the head of Bowling Green keeper Lauren Cadel.

It was Gassman's first goal of the season and Korte's first assist. It came at the 103-minute, 40-second mark.

"We did a couple things, we made a few adjustments and Laeufer got to start," McGahey said. "We deployed a few other players including Gassmen earlier tonight and it certainly helped us."

Senior Laura Gosse finished with six shots for CMU, and Gassmen had three.

The Chippewas will play a MAC match at Eastern Michigan on Sunday. The Eagles are 7-4-1, 3-2, after a 1-0 win over Toledo on Friday.

"Again, I just think its one of things that you have to recharge, re-load, and get everything organized for Sunday," McGahey said.

The Eastern game is CMU's fourth consecutive on the road. The Chippewas play host to Buffalo and Akron next weekend.
