AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron men's soccer senior Luke Holmes was named Top Drawer Soccer's National Player of the Week Monday after an impressive first week in an Akron uniform.
The transfer from Notre Dame College (Ohio) recorded two goals and assisted a pair of game-winners to lead the Zips (7-0-2) to convincing wins over Ohio State and Western Michigan last week. UA is now one of just five NCAA Division I programs yet to sustain a loss this fall.
In his Zips' debut last Wednesday, Holmes found the back of the net and assisted Thomas Schmitt's decisive strike to fuel a 3-1 win over the Buckeyes in front of a record-setting crowd of 5,819 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. The English striker then matched his output Saturday – assisting Aodhan Quinn's game-winner – as Akron earned a 3-0 result in its Mid-American Conference opener in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Holmes is the second UA player to receive National Player of the Week honors from Top Drawer Soccer this season. Darren Mattocks was the first to do it on Sept. 26 after recording the second hat trick of his career at Tulsa.
The Zips will next head to the site of their 2010 national championship when they travel to UC Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. (ET) on FOX Soccer Channel.
