MAC Announces Men's Basketball Postseason Awards

CLEVELAND -- Today the league announced that Kent State's DeAndre Haynes and Jim Christian have earned top honors for the 2005-06 basketball season. Haynes was named Player of the Year while Christian captured Coach of the Year honors. The 20 member All-MAC team was also announced today as voted by the league's 12 head coaches

Haynes, a unanimous All-MAC First Team choice, led the Golden Flashes to its second ever MAC regular season championship and a No. 1 seed in the FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament. Haynes becomes the first Golden Flash to be named Player of the Year. He is currently second on the team and ranks 13th overall in the conference in scoring (13.4), while finishing eighth in the league in assists (4.0). Haynes also finished sixth in the league in steals with 1.67 thefts per game and has led Kent State in scoring ten times during the season.

Christian wins his first MAC coaching honor after guiding the Golden Flashes to a MAC regular season title and a 22-8 (15-3 MAC) record. It marks the fifth time in KSU history that their coach received the top honor.

The All-MAC First, Second, and Honorable Mention teams were also announced as Haynes was joined by teammate Jay Youngblood, Akron's Romeo Travis, Eastern Michigan's John Bowler and Miami's William Hatcher.

Ball State's Skip Mills, Bowling Green's Martin Samarco, Buffalo's Calvin Cage, Toledo's Justin Ingram and Western Michigan's Joe Reitz rounded out the second-team squad.

Honorable mention recognition went to Miami's Nathan Peavy and Tim Pollitz, while Leon Williams and Mychal Green repersented Ohio. Akron's Dru Joyce, Buffalo's Yassin Idbihi, Central Michigan's Giordan Watson, Northern Illinois' Todd Peterson and Western Michigan's Brian Snider also received honorable mention honors. 2006 MAC Sixth Man of the Year Kevin Warzynski (Kent State) was also named to the honorable mention squad.
