CLEVELAND -- A dozen repeat all-MAC performers from last year highlight the 2006 all-conference honorees as announced today. The league will formally present the student-athletes with their awards Tuesday evening at the league's tournament Tip-Off Banquet at the Hyatt Regency at the Arcade in Cleveland. Voting on the team was conducted by the league's 12 head coaches.
Three student-athletes on this year's first-team are back from last year's first-team honorees -- Eastern Michigan's Ryan Coleman, Kent State's Lindsay Shearer and Western Michigan's Carrie Moore. Casey Rost of Western Michigan, a first teamer in 2003 and 2004 prior to an injury that kept her out for most of the 2005 season, captured all-MAC first-team laurels as did Ali Mann of Bowling Green for the first time in her career. For Coleman it marked her fourth consecutive all-conference selection.
Coleman missed the first five games of the season but came back strong to average 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game as the Eagles went 15-1 in league play to capture the West Division championship for the second time in the last three seasons. EMU is 21-6 overall, winning 20 games for the third consecutive season.
Shearer was tabbed for first-team honors for the third consecutive year. Also honored last week as the Women's Basketball University Division Academic All-American of the Year by ESPN The Magazine, Shearer leads the league in scoring at 20.6 ppg, is ninth in rebounds (7.1 rpg), third in field goal percentage (51.4) and second in free throw accuracy (86.8). She led KSU to a 12-4 conference record, good for second place in the East Division.
Moore earned her second consecutive first-team honor while leading the Broncos to an 11-5 MAC record, finishing second in the West Division. Moore posted 17.1 points and grabbed 7.3 rebounds each game. Moore also ranks fourth in field goal percentage (50.3) and posted six double-doubles during the season. Teammate Rost rebounded from an injury last year with a banner 2006 season. She ranks second overall in scoring in the MAC with 17.6 ppg and set the league's career record for 3-point goals with 273, including a league high 72 this season.
Mann led the Falcons to a perfect 16-0 league record, just the fifth time in MAC history that has happened. Mann ranked in the top 10 in the league in scoring (sixth, 14.7), rebounding (sixth, 7.3), field goal percentage (sixth, 48.2) and free throw percentage (seventh, 77.7). BG is 25-2 overall going into the MAC Tournament and will set a league record for the most wins in a single season if they win the tournament.
Named to the all-MAC second team are Bowling Green's Liz Honegger and Kate Achter, Eastern Michigan's Nikki Knapp and Patrice McKinney and Northern Illinois' Stephanie Raymond. Honegger, Knapp and Raymond were previous all-MAC selections.
For the second time in league history, a third-team all-conference was awarded. That group includes Jessie Crooks of Akron, Julie DeMuth of Ball State, Carin Horne of Bowling Green, Heather Turner from Buffalo and Cindi Merrill from Miami. Horne and Merrill had prior all-conference selections.
The honorable mention team is comprised of Central Michigan's Ann Skufca, Kent State's Malika Willoughby, Northern Illinois' Kristin Wiener, Ohio's Rachel Frederick and Simone Redd and Toledo's Danielle Bishop. Willoughby, Redd and Bishop earned all-league honors for the second time in their career. A tie in the voting resulted in six selections on the honorable mention team.
Occupying the five-member all-freshman team are Akron's Niki McCoy, Buffalo's Jamie Schiebner, Miami's Jenna Schone, Ohio's Rachel Frederick and Toledo's Diana Reindl
.
A complete list of all four all-MAC teams, along with the all-freshman team, follows. The league's specialty awards -- Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and the Sixth Man of the Year award -- will be announced Tuesday evening coinciding with the MAC's women's basketball banquet, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency at the Arcade.
