CLEVELAND -- Sixteen of the 20 members honored on the 2005 All-Mid-American Conference team are first time selections as announced today by the league office. Voting was conducted among the league's 13 head coaches.
MAC Champion Miami lead the top honorees with senior guard Chet Mason -- also the league's defensive player of the year -- and senior forward Danny Horace as selections. Western Michigan guard Ben Reed was the lone first-team repeat selection from last year. MAC Player of the Year, Buffalo senior guard Turner Battle, and Bowling Green senior forward Josh Almanson round out the five-member first squad.
Mason and Horace led the RedHawks to their MAC record 21st league title and the school's first since 1999. Horace led the team in scoring at 15.2 ppg and in rebounds at 9.2 rpg, including 9.6 rpg in MAC only games. Mason was second for the RedHawks in those categories with 13.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg. The duo also paved the way for a league-leading defense that allowed a MAC best 61.1 ppg, which was 4.5 ppg lower than the second best defensive team.
Battle earned repeat all-conference honors as he sparked the Bulls to the first 20-win season in school history. Battle averaged a team-high 15.4 ppg on the league's No. 1 scoring offense at 74.7 ppg. Battle is third in field goal percentage at 46.9, fifth in assists at 4.46 per game and 11th in steals at 1.57 per game.
Reed led the Broncos, the defending league champion, to a MAC West co-championship with Toledo with his 17.7 ppg average, second most in the league going into this week's games. Reed is also 11th in rebounding at 6.0 per game and fifth in field goal shooting at 45.8 percent. As well, his 2.4 three-point goals per game is fifth in the league and he is sixth in three-point shooting at 40.7 percent.
Almanson helped the Falcons improve their win total by four from last year and ranked among the league leaders in several major categories. His 59.5 field goal percentage is first, he is third in scoring at 17.2 ppg and eighth in free throw percentage at 78.7 percent.
Four of the five second-team all-MAC selections were recognized on the post season team for the first time. The lone repeat all-conference selection was Toledo senior guard Keith Triplett, a first-team honoree last year. Triplett led the Rockets to a West Division co-champion and No. 2 tournament seed by averaging 15.1 ppg, 10th in the MAC, and a league-leading 2.61 steals per game.
First time honorees are sophomore forward Romeo Travis of Akron, senior guard Dennis Trammell of Ball State, senior forward John Reimold of Bowling Green and senior forward Levi Rost of Western Michigan.
The honorable mention team is made up of 10 new honorees with Darryl Peterson of Akron, Mark Bortz of Buffalo, Kevin Nelson from Central Michigan, John Bowler from Eastern Michigan, teammates Jason Edwin and Kevin Warzynski from Kent State, Mike McKinney of Northern Illinois and the Ohio Bobcat trio of Mychal Green, Sonny Troutman and Leon Williams.
Williams became the first freshman selected all-MAC since 1998 when Mike Manciel of Central Michigan and J.R. VanHoose of Marshall were both selected honorable mention all-conference.
