Cleveland, Ohio --The 2004 All-Mid-American Conference football team, as voted on by the league's 14 head coaches, was announced today and 18 honorees from last year's team were recognized again with those accolades.
The group was headlined by Toledo offensive linemen Nick Kaczur, who became just the fourth player in league history selected to all-conference honors four times. Kaczur joined Bowling Green quarterback Brian McClure (1982-85), Ohio punter Dave Zastudil (1998-01) and Northern Illinois placekicker Steve Azar (2000-03) in that select group. Kaczur also became the 33rd player in league history selected first-team all-MAC three times (2002-04) as he was second-team all-MAC as a freshman in 2001. McClure and Zastudil were four-time first-team honorees.
Also honored as first-team selections as they were in 2003 are wide receiver Lance Moore of Toledo, Northern Illinois University teammates offensive linemen Jake VerStraete and inside linebacker Brian Atkinson, and Ball State defensive back Justin Beriault. Those selected to first-team honors this year after second-team honors last year are offensive lineman Adam Kieft of Central Michigan, wide receiver Greg Jennings of Western Michigan, running back Jerry Seymour of Central Michigan and outside linebacker Terna Nande of Miami.
Second-team selections who were repeat all-MAC honorees in 2003 are center Scott Mruczkowski of Bowling Green; offensive linemen Todd Londot of Miami; running backs P.J. Pope of Bowling Green and Anthony Sherrell of Eastern Michigan; outside linebacker James King of Central Michigan; defensive linemen Mitch Crossley of Bowling Green and Jamus Martin of Marshall; inside linebacker Eric Mahl of Kent State; and punter Adam Anderson of Western Michigan.
Ball State's Adell Givens at running back became the first freshman selected to first-team all-MAC since Marshall wide receiver Josh Davis in 2001.
MAC West Division co-champion Northern Illinois led all schools with 12 selections to the 60-member squad. Bowling Green had 10 honorees and East Division champ Miami had eight while Toledo had five players named to the team. The complete list follows.
The MAC Specialty Awards will be announced tomorrow. Those awards include the Vern Smith Leadership Award, Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
