Jan. 27, 2004
DELAWARE, Ohio- Ohio Baseball head coach Joe Carbone will be among six charter members inducted into the Great Lakes League Hall of Fame, announced the league today.
The ceremony will take place at the GLL All-Star game on Sunday, July 18 at Littick Field at Ohio Wesleyan University.
"Joe has been a major contributor to the development of this league," said commissioner Roger Ingles. "His expertise as a manager, general manger and advisor has led to the growth and success of this league."
Carbone was the general manager and manager of the Columbus All-Americans when the league formed in 1986. He led the All-Americans to the leagues first championship. For his accomplishments, the leagues "Manager of the Year Award" was named in his honor in 2002.
He will be joined by Eric Wedge, MVP for Lima Locals in 1987 and presently manager of the Cleveland Indians, Jerry DiCuccio, founding owner of Columbus All-Americans, and Lou Laslo, Ron Miller and Gary Henschen who are all attributed as the founding fathers for the summer league, which started with six teams and is now at 11.
The league has seen over 65 players move onto the major leagues, including the likes of David Dellucci (Texas Rangers), Paul Shuey (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Paul Quantrill (Yankees).
"Joe brings a level of intensity, integrity and character to the league", said Ingles. "Without this charter class leading the way, the league might not have succeeded and grown like he has."
This is the second Hall of Fame that Carbone has been inducted into. He is also a member of the Tioga County Athletic Hall of Fame where he lettered in soccer, basketball and baseball for Elkland High School of Elkland, Pa.
