Kent State's Huffman and Ball State's Planck Named MAC Scholar Athletes

CLEVELAND -- Kent State's Trevor Huffman (basketball) and Ball State's Renee Planck (gymnastics) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on March 13, 2001.

Planck (Jr., 3.52, elementary educaiton, Mason, Ohio) shattered the school record with her first-place 9.925 score on the bars at the UIC Triangular on Friday, March 9. Her score helped Ball State to a school-record 49.275 team score on the bars.

Trevor Huffman (Jr., 3.07, education, Petoskey, Mich.) averaged 22 points and four rebounds in three Mid-American Conference Tournament wins. He was named the MAC Tournament MVP. Huffman tied a career-high with 27 points in the championship game against Miami (67-61). He went 19-of-38 from the field, including 7-of-17 from three-point range and was 21-of-23 from the free-throw line. Huffman was also named to the all-MAC First Team.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.


Female Nominees:

Bowling Green: Abby Bratton (tennis, Sr., 3.37, health care administration, Carroll, Ohio) won in both singles and doubles as the Falcons posted a road win over Butler, 6-1. She defeated BU's Olivia Pedro (7-5, 6-2) at No. 2 singles. She teamed with classmate Erika Wasilewski for a win at the top doubles level. Bratton leads the team with 12 singles wins this year. She also paces the Falcons with 11 doubles wins and 23 overall victories.

Buffalo: Christina Keck (track & field, So., 3.32, psychology, Erie, Pa.) won the 1500 meters at the Seahawk Invitational at UNC Wilmington in 4:49.94. The Bulls scored 197 points to finish second behind UNCW's 253.

Central Michigan: Sarah Dame (gymnastics, So., 3.99, pre-law, Maple City, Mich.) helped CMU to a second-place finish at the Kentucky Quad on March 9. She took third in the all-around with a career-high 38.900. She also finished fifth on the beam with a career-best 9.825 and tied for seventh on the vault with a 9.775.

Kent State: Lea Dorto (softball, So., 4.00, pre-business, North Canton, Ohio) belted four home runs over the weekend at the University of Kentucky Invitaitional. She was named to the all-tournament team. Dorto had two home runs in a 4-3 loss to Louisville. Dorte went 5-of-14 with six runs and five runs-batted-in.

Ohio: Tiffany Bolton (softball, Jr., 3.51, exercise physiology, Fairfax, Va.) batted .333 (4-12) at the 49er Invitational. She had two doubles, two RBI, scored three runs and slugged .500 in four games.


Male Nominees:

Buffalo: Tim Powell (tennis, Jr., 3.422, computer engineering, Rochester, N.Y.) won his sixth singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Eurico Capitan of St. Joseph's to help the Bulls to a 7-0 win over the Hawks. The Bulls are off to their best start in school history with a 10-0 mark including their fall season.

Central Michigan: Jason Helps (baseball, Sr., 3.40, health fitness, Wyoming, Ontario) helped CMU to a 5-2 record last week and the title at the 54th Annual Baseball Week Tournament at Rollins College. He hit .344 with 14 RBI, two doubles, one triple and three home runs last week. Helps also hit for the cycle in a 15-9 win over Long Island on March 6.

Miami: Jason Grunkemeyer (basketball, Sr., 3.35, physical education, Mason, Ohio) lifted the No. 8 RedHawks to their fifth straight MAC Championship game appearance with a heroic game-winning three-point shot in the semifinal round. After an opening-round win over No. 9 Akron, which Grunkemeyer tallied 14 points and went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, Miami went on to knock off No. 1 seeded Central Michigan in the quarterfinal round, 65-56. Sparked by Grunkemeyer's team-high 16 points along with his eight rebounds, the RedHawks eliminated the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals for the second-straight year. In the semifinal, Grunkemeyer again led the RedHawks in scoring with 14 points. His lone three-pointer of the game was the game-winner, which he drained with 6.8 seconds remaining in the game to lift Miami to a 62-61 triumph over No. 5 Ohio and advance to the championship game for the fifth-straight year. The RedHawks fell, 67-61, in the championship game to No. 2 Kent State. For the tournament, Grunkemeyer averaged 11.8 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, dished out eight assists, went 14-of-38 from the field, 5-of-15 from three-point range and 14-of-18 (.778) from the free-throw line.
