Dave Wottle, Bowling Green (Track & Field)
Dave Wottle was a track star at Bowling Green, but gained national recognition when he won gold in the 800m at the 1972 Olympic Games. Wottle, who was best known for wearing a baseball cap while he raced, was also a star athlete at Bowling Green State University.
In 1970, Wottle finished second at the NCAA meet in the mile. Injuries kept him out of competition in 1971, but he had a career year in 1972.
Before the Olympics, Wottle won the 1500m at the NCAA championships, and the 800m event at the AAU championships. After returning to campus, Wottle once again took first-place in the mile at the 1973 NCAA championships.
