Bob Welch, Eastern Michigan (Baseball)

Bob Welch was an outstanding right-handed pitcher for the Eastern Michigan baseball team from 1974-77.  He earned All-America honors in 1976 after posting a 10-3 record with a 1.82 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 94 innings pitched.  Welch was a mainstay on the pitching staff that helped Eastern Michigan win the Mid-American Conference and Mid-East Regional Championships in both 1975 and 1976.

Welch helped lead the Eastern Michigan baseball team to a second-place finish at the 1976 NCAA College World Series and a fifth-place finish at the 1975 Series.  He pitched a perfect game against the University of Detroit on May 23, 1976 and threw a no-hitter at Central Michigan on April 24, 1976.  He was a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 1975 and 1976 and was named to the United States Federation team in 1976.

Welch was a first-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1977 Major League Baseball draft and was a starting pitcher for the Dodgers from 1978-87.  He won Major League Baseball's top pitching award when he was named the winner of the Cy Young Award in 1990 as a member of the Oakland Athletics.  Welch was the pitching coach for the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001.  He was elected to the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
