John Gill, Western Michigan (Administration)
John Gill served Western Michigan as an assistant coach, head coach and athletic administrator from 1928-69, retiring in the capacity of associate athletic director.
As an athlete, Gill competed in football at halfback, baseball as an infielder and basketball as guard, and also set an 880-yard record in track that stood for 11 years. His 13 undergraduate letters is second highest in school history.
Gill served as head football coach from 1942-52 and never finished below .500 in any season. He was credited with giving Western Michigan its Broncos nickname in 1939. Gill was inducted into the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame in 1994.
