Fran Ebert was a graduate of Wisconsin-LaCrosse who joined the Western Michigan physical education staff in 1963 and retired as an associate professor in 1990.

Ebert recorded 15 winning seasons over 18 years as the Western Michigan head women's basketball coach. Her teams compiled a record of 156-133 and won three state AIAW titles and finished second three other times.

She also started the varsity softball program in 1976 and had a 10-year record of 270-116-1.  In 1980 and 1981, her teams were fourth and ninth respectively in national AIAW play and in 1982 finished fifth at the inaugural NCAA College World Series. 

Ebert was inducted into the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame in 1992.
