MAC Volleyball Begins Non-Conference Finale This Weekend

Bowling Green Falcons (4-5, 0-0 MAC) 
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – 
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will open their home schedule this week while closing their non-conference slate. Bowling Green's home opener is set for Wednesday (Sept. 17) against Oakland with a 6 p.m. first serve. The Falcons will then hit the road for their final two tests before MAC play starts next week. The Orange and Brown will face Michigan State on Friday (Sept. 19) with a 6 p.m. start before taking on Binghamton on Saturday (Sept. 20) at 3 p.m., both in East Lansing. The match against Oakland will be on ESPN+ while the two at Michigan State will be on BIG+.

First Serve
  • The Falcons will begin the week against Oakland for BGSU's home opener on Wednesday (Sept. 17). The Falcons are coming off back-to-back seasons as the MAC's leader in attendance.
  • Bowling Green has won their home opener each of the last six seasons with the streak dating back to the 2019 campaign. 
  • BGSU will wrap up the non-conference slate on the road against Michigan State (Sept. 19) and Binghamton (Sept. 20) at the Kathy DeBoer Invitational. 
  • Bowling Green is coming off back-to-back wins at the Loyola Invitational, beating both SFA and Loyola Chicago in four sets.
  • Avery Hobson and Amanda Otten earned MAC Player of the Week honors on Monday (Sept. 15) with Hobson being the MAC Offensive Player of the Week while Otten was named the MAC Setter of the Week. 
  • Entering the week with a 4-5 record and three matches on deck, the Falcons will eye a .500 or better record entering MAC play for the first time since going 6-5 in 2023. The Falcons just missed the mark last season, finishing the non-conference schedule with a record of 5-6. BGSU also went 5-6 during the 2022 non-conference slate. 
Otten Among Nation's Leaders
Amanda Otten has placed her name among the nation's best setters so far this season. Over BGSU's nine matches, Otten has totaled 345 assists, tied for 10th in the nation. The total has resulted in a 9.58 assists per set mark for Otten, which leads the Mid-American Conference. Otten is also only one of two players in the MAC with two 50-assist matches, joined by Ball State's Lindsey Green. Otten tallied 52 against Loyola Chicago as well as 50 against Purdue. The 52-assist match aided Otten in being named the MAC Setter of the Week.

Hobson Catches Fire
In the two wins last week, Avery Hobson caught fire for the Falcons. Against SFA, she landed a career-high 24 kills while logging a .404 hitting percentage. She followed it up with 18 kills against Loyola Chicago, one off the team lead. Hobson added eight digs in each match as well as five block assists against SFA. The strong week for Hobson earned her the MAC Offensive Player of the Week honor, joining Lauryn Hovey's Sept. 9 recognition for back-to-back for the Falcons. 


Central Michigan Chippewas (3-6, 0-0 MAC) 
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - 
The Chippewas open their B10 week with a match at Michigan on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CMU and U-M last met in 2012, and CMU lost 0-3. All time in the history of the two programs, Central Michigan leads 25-8-1. Between 1974-83, CMU won 17 of 18 games played against the Wolverines. Since 1985, Michigan holds the 5-3 record over the Chippewas. 

HEADED HOME ON A HIGH NOTE: 
Central Michigan Volleyball left their trip to Milwaukee with a three-set sweep over the host Panthers. The victory marked the first victory sweep for the Chippewas under Arielle Wilson. Abby Olin lead CMU offensively with 10 kills, hitting .421and had three total blocks. Izzy Swiercz and Taylor Cripe each charted 9 kills hitting .400 and .261 respectively. In Milwaukee, the Chippewas dropped matches to Iowa State (0-3) and South Alabama (1-3). Overall on the trip, Central Michigan hit .224 as a team, led by Grace Thomas hitting .400 with 17 kills. At the service line, CMU charted 14 aces, and blocked 19 balls.


Ball State Cardinals (4-5, 0-0 MAC) 

The Ball State women's volleyball team will be in action at home the first time this season when it hosts Cincinnati at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for Field Trip Day ... It is the first of three home matches on the week, as the Cardinals also welcome Purdue Friday (6 p.m.) and Eastern Kentucky Saturday (4 p.m.).
    
BALL STATE ALL-TIME: Ball State enters Thursday's match versus Cincinnati with a 1038-663-2 (.610) all-time record in women's volleyball ... Ball State became the 44th program in NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball history to reach 1,000 wins with a sweep of Central Michigan on Sept. 22, 2023 ... All-time, the Cardinals have captured 12 MAC West Division Championships, 10 MAC Regular Season Championships and eight MAC Volleyball Championship titles ... Ball State has made 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including three of the last six seasons ... BSU has also earned two bids into the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
 
WHEN IN WORTHEN: The Cardinals boast a 324-100 (.764) all-time mark inside Worthen Arena, including an 84-38 (.689) record against non-conference foes ... Purdue is the only team of this week's opponents to have played regular season match in Worthen Arena, with the Boilermakers earning a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) victory Sept. 6, 2008 ... Looking at just opponents from the MAC, Ball State is 240-62 (.795) when battling in its current home gym ... Overall, no MAC opponent owns a winning record inside Worthen Arena, as the Cardinals have at least a .630 winning percentage against all league schools on its current home floor.
 
BALL STATE IN THE MAC: With a 13-5 league record in 2024, Ball State maintained its status as the winningest program in league play with a 459-225 (.671) all-time Mid-American Conference mark ... Western Michigan is second on the list, two matches behind the Cardinals at 457-227 (.668).
 
BALL STATE QUICK HITS:
• Graduate outside Noelle VanOort made quite an impact during her first three weekends with the Cardinals, smashing 132 total kills, collecting 83 digs and hitting .294 (132-36-327) ... A member of the Golden Gopher Invitational All-Tournament Team, VanOort has smashed double digit kills in eight of BSU's nine matches, including a season-high 20 kills twice ... She has also been credited with five kill/dig double-doubles ... The effort helped her raise her collegiate total to 11 matches with 20+ kills, including a 20/20 effort Nov. 5, 2022, with 23 kills and 25 digs versus Siena Heights.
 
• Prior to arriving at Ball State, Noelle VanOort finished her four-year playing career at Indiana Tech (2021-24) as a two-time NAIA Third Team All-American ... Her 1,724 career kills ranked second in program history, while her 1,648 career digs were sixth ... She also set the program standard with 282 career service aces ... She continued to find success in her first three weekends with the Cardinals with double-digit kills in eight of the nine outings ...  The effort upped her career total to 105 collegiate matches with double-digit kills.
 
• Noelle VanOort has been just as solid on defense through the first three weekends, earning double-digit digs five times, including a season-high 15 vs. Cal Poly (Sept. 31) ... The effort has raised her career total to 95 matches with double-digit digs, including her 90 at Indiana Tech ... It also helped her raise her collegiate kill/dig double-double total to 73, including five with Ball State and 68 with the Warriors.
 
• Sophomore outside Carson Tyler has been just as impressive over the first three weeks, smashing 158 total kills for a team-high 4.16 kills-per-set average ... The effort includes a career-high 26 kills last time out versus James Madison (Sept. 14) and 21 kills at UConn (Sept. 5) ... Last season, Tyler averaged 3.34 kills per set to become the first player in program history to earn AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year accolades.
 
•  Carson Tyler has smashed double-digit kills in all nine matches for the Cardinals so far this season, raising her career total to 31 ... She has secured 20+ kills in nine of those matches and is one of just nine players in program history to register 20-or-more kills in at least nine career matches.
 
• A six-rotation player, Carson Tyler is currently second on the squad with 108 digs this season ... She has recorded kill/dig double-doubles in six matches so far this season, including all three matches at last weekend's Marquette Tournament ... Her effort last weekend included a career-high 19 digs in the win over host Marquette (Sept. 12) ... Tyler also leads Ball State's primary passers with a .961 reception percentage this seasons, successfully passing 199 of the 207 serves she faced ... Tyler led the Cardinals' primary passers last season with a .963 reception percentage by successfully passing 650 of the team-high 675 serves she faced.
 
• With 20 kills each in the Aug. 31 match versus Cal Poly, Noelle VanOort and Carson Tyler became the first Ball State duo to record 20-or-more kills in the same match since the 2007 season ... Brittany May and Julie Breivogel were the last players to do so with 21 and 20 kills, respectively, in an Oct. 5, 2027 match versus Western Michigan.
 
• Sophomore libero Sophie Ledbetter paces the Ball State defense with 137 digs and a 3.61 digs-per-set average so far this season ... Both the dig total and the average rank fifth among MAC defenders so far this season ... She has recorded double-digit digs in eight of BSU's nine matches, upping her career total to 31 ... The effort includes a season-high 26 digs in the season-opener versus St. Thomas (Aug. 29), one shy of her career-high 27 digs set last season versus James Madison (Sept. 6, 2024).
 
• Sophie Ledbetter earned her first collegiate double-double versus Cal Poly (Aug. 31), handing out 10 assists to go along with her 14 digs in the outing.
 
• Junior Lindsey Green and freshman Reese Axness have combined to lead the Ball State offense to a .250 attack percentage so far this season which is first in the MAC and 75th nationally ... Green, who dished out a career-high 51 assists twice last weekend, currently ranks eighth in the MAC with a 7.79 assists-per-set average ... She also leads the squad with 12 service aces ... Axness, meanwhile, enters the week with a 3.86 assists-per-set average and has served up a pair of aces.
 
• Sophomore transfer middle/opposite Tiffany Snook turned in one of the best matches of her collegiate career versus Cal Poly (Aug. 31), smashing a career-high 16 kills while connecting for a .481 (16-3-27) rate of success ... It was her 10th collegiate match with double-digit kills, including nine in her lone season at Memphis, and was three kills more than her previous career high of 13 at Southern Illinois Sept. 6, 2024.


Kent State Golden Flashes (4-5, 0-0 MAC) 
Kent State finishes the non-conference portion of the 2025 volleyball schedule this week with single matches at Cleveland State on Thursday and Youngstown State on Friday. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+.

PREVIEWING THE FLASHES
Kent State (4-5) has gone 2-1 each of the past two weekends and has a chance to finish non-conference play with a winning record for the first time since 2022.

Senior Mackenzie McGuire is the MAC leader in kills per set (4.21) and ranks 17th in the nation in total kills (143). McGuire has recorded at least 17 kills in six of nine matches and ranks second in the conference in points per set (4.76).

A trio of newcomers have made immediate impacts to Kent State's attack, as freshman Macie Moreland (62), junior Mercedez Brown (62) and redshirt sophomore Adalynn Ginley (42) are the next three kills leaders. Ginley ranks seventh in the conference in both hitting percentage (.304) and blocks per set (1.00).

Junior Christina Vigil ranks third in the MAC at 9.29 assists per set and ranks 37th nationally in total assists (316). Vigil also leads the Flashes with 2.32 digs per set.



Akron Zips (5-4, 0-0 MAC)
AKRON, Ohio - The Zips conclude their non-conference schedule when they travel to Youngstown State on Thursday, September 18, and host Cleveland State on Friday, September 19.

Zips At A Glance
The Zips come into the week with a 5-4 record after going 1-2 at the Geri Polvino Invitational in Richmond, Ky.

Akron started with a 3-1 victory over host Eastern Kentucky on Friday, which saw the Delaney Gash lead the squad with a career-high 25 kills. Martina Villani recorded her second double-double of the season with a 40-assist and a career-high 13-dig performance. Vanessa Del Real filled up the stat sheet for the Blue and Gold, supplying a career-high 11 assists, seven digs and four aces.

The Zips fell to Northern Kentucky and Texas-Rio Grande Valley in three sets on Saturday.

Maureen Mathews leads Akron in kills (141) and points (150). Villani is leading the Blue and Gold in assists (294). Del Real is the leader in aces (20) and digs (124), while Chidera Ozoh leads the way in blocks (32).

As a team, Akron ranks in the top-five in the MAC in fewest opponent assists per set (5th - 10.86), fewest opponent kills per set (11.47), total aces (5th - 58), and fewest opponent digs per set (3rd - 12.69). Individually, Akron's Maureen Mathews is ranked 4th in kills per set (3.92), 5th in total kills (141), 5th in total points (150), and 6th in points per set (4.17). Martina Villani ranks 7th in total assists (294) and assists per set (8.17). Vanessa Del Real is 1st in aces per set (.56) and total aces (20) while ranking 7th in total digs (124) and digs per set (3.44). Chidera Ozoh ranks 5th in total blocks (32) and 9th in blocks per set (.89). Delaney Gash ranks 8th in total kills (107) and kills per set (3.24).

Among The Best In The NCAA
As a team, Akron ranks 60th in the NCAA in total assists (413), 101st in total digs (482), 59th in total kills (448) and 82nd in total aces (58). Individually, Vanessa Del Real ranks 45th in aces per set (.56), 14th in total aces (20) and 120th in total digs (124). Maureen Mathewsranks 71st in kills per set (3.92) 43rd in total points (150) and 21st in total kills (141). Martina Villani ranks 63rd in total assists (294).

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team wraps up non-conference play this weekend with Kendall's Battle at the Capital Credit Union Classic in Green Bay, Wis. The Broncos are slated to face Green Bay, Northern Iowa and Tennessee Tech over the course of the three-day tournament.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Western Michigan closes out its stretch of six consecutive contests away from home this week with its final non-conference tournament, the Capital Credit Union Classic. The Broncos are slated to open the tournament on Thursday night against Green Bay, then face Northern Iowa on Friday afternoon and Tennessee Tech on Saturday afternoon. 

LAST TIME OUT
The Broncos are coming off of three matches in three days at the LMU Invitational in Los Angeles. Western Michigan took the first set of the tournament opener against LMU, but dropped the next three frames to the Lions. On Friday and Saturday, the Brown and Gold fell to a pair of top-20 teams, in #16 USC and #19 BYU.

LEAGUE-LEADING LIBERO
Elana Erickson has excelled in the libero role for WMU in the first few weeks of the season. The sophomore leads the conference in total digs (161), which ranks 29th in NCAA Division I. She is also the league leader in digs per set, tallying 4.35 per frame. Led by its new libero, Western Michigan paces the conference in digs per set (15.70, 35th in DI) and is 16th in the nation in total digs with 581.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE
Setter Leah Richmond registered two more double-doubles at the LMU Invitational, totaling 27 assists and 11 digs against LMU, and 25 assists and 11 digs against #19 BYU. She nearly had a double-double against #16 USC as well, notching 24 assists and nine digs. Through 10 career matches, Richmond has a team-high six double-doubles. She ranks fifth in the MAC at 8.89 assists per set, while ranking second on the Broncos and just outside of the top-10 in the league in digs at 2.84 per set.


Eastern Michigan Eagles (7-3, 0-0 MAC) 
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- 
Off to its first 7-3 start since 2018, the Eastern Michigan volleyball program aims to keep the ball rolling at the Butler Invitational, hosted by Butler University, at the Fishers Event Center, Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 18-20, in Fishers, Ind.

The Eagles will start the week with a 7 p.m. match against the Jaguars of IU Indy Thursday, Sept. 18. Eastern will then face Oakland University Friday, Sept. 19, 4 p.m., and close the invitational against the host Bulldogs Saturday, Sept. 20, 5 p.m.

STARTING HOT
Eastern is off to its first 7-3 start since the 2018 season, the last time it won a MAC Tournament Championship. Eastern is looking for its first 9-3 start since 2018 while the last time the Eagles started 10-3 or better came in the 2012 season. Eastern's 7-3 mark currently ranks it second in the MAC.

AHEAD OF SCHEDULE: 2025 WIN TOTAL
Eastern is off to its first 7-3 start since the 2018 season, the last time EMU won the MAC Tournament. Last season, the Eagles posted just four wins through their first 10 games. EMU didn't reach seven wins till Sept. 26 last season when it bested Kent State University on the road in the conference opener, 3-2.

LOOKING FOR CONSISTENCY
A win against IU Indy, Sept. 18, would mark the third occurrence of three straight wins in the Foeman era. A fourth consecutive victory would be the program's first since 2017 when it won five consecutive, Sept. 2-9. Eastern hasn't won six consecutive matches since 2012, Sept. 1-8. Eastern is 7-0 this season when hitting better than its opponent and 21-4 under Foeman when doing so. EMU has out-killed its foe in 8-of-10 games this season, producing a 7-1 record in 2025 and 17-3 overall mark in three seasons under Foeman.

HISTORIC HITTING PERCENTAGE
Eastern hit .424 (41-5-85) in the sweep over Purdue Fort Wayne, Sept. 4. The clip ranks first in the MAC and sixth in program history. EMU has out-hit its opponent in 7-of-10 games for the first time since the 2018 season, Oct. 25-Nov. 18.  That season, the Eagles out-hit their opponent in 27-of-35 games en route to a MAC 

WELKER 11 BLOCKS PROGRAM STANDING
Hatteras Welker's 11 blocks against Valparaiso rank second in EMU program history while standing second in the MAC, first in a four-set match, and fourth in the nation in four stanzas.

RECENT CAREER-HIGHS
AshleeKay Christensen set career bests with 20 kills, five digs, a .336 hitting percentage, and 46 attacks against Southern Illinois, Sept. 12. Surabhi Srinivasan landed a career-best three aces against Xavier, Sept. 12.

MOST ACES UNDER FOEMAN
Eastern landed 12 aces in the win over UMKC, Aug. 30, marking the most in the Foeman era (2023-present) and the most in a single game since it recorded 15 against Buffalo, Oct. 27, 2006. The total stands fourth in the program's all-time single-game leaderboards.

MILESTONES
Ava Siefke recently reached the 500 mark with her 17 kills in the win over SIU, Sept. 12. She currently has 527 in her career and needs just one more dig to reach 500. Ashlynn Belcher is 12 digs away from 500 and 41 assists from reaching the 1,500 mark. Ella Voorhees needs 35 more assists to get to 500, and Abby Stanford requires four kills to achieve the same total.

The Ohio volleyball team (2-3) is back in action Sept. 19-20 in Charlotte, N.C. for the 2025 Charlotte Invitational inside Halton Arena. The weekend begins on Friday, Sept. 19 for two matchups starting at 10:30 a.m. ET against Maryland Eastern Shore (2-8). Ohio is then back on the court at 6:30 p.m. ET to take on host Charlotte (6-3). That match can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio wraps up nonconference play at Noon ET on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they take on Furman (7-2). 

Maryland Eastern Shore heads to Charlotte wit a 2-8 record and are coming off loses to Virginia Tech, Marshall and Robert Morris at the Virginia Tech Tournament this past weekend. Charlotte is 6-3 overall and are coming off three wins at the UNCW Invitational this past weekend, where thr 49ers took down UNCG, West Georgia and UNCW. Furman is 7-2 overall after picking up three wins this past weekend at the Furman Invite where they defeated Alabama State, North Florida and Winthorp. 

Ohio is coming off a tough weekend at the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational in Dayton, Ohio, falling to Ohio State, No. 7 Pitt and host Wright State.

The women's volleyball team (6-3) wraps up non-conference action at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Friday, Sept. 19-Saturday, Sept. 20 where it will face Bellarmine, Mercyhurst and Purdue Fort Wayne. Senior setter Kelsey Smith is averaging 9.26 assists/set while sophomore libero Grace Freiberger is holding down the defense with 4.24 digs/set.


Buffalo Bulls (3-4, 0-0 MAC) 

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (3-4, 0-0 MAC) will hit the road for a pair of matches in the Pittsburgh, Pa. district this weekend. Buffalo will face the Duquesne Dukes (7-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Bulls hosted the Buffalo Classic last weekend where the Bulls went 1-2. They fell to the Northwestern Wilcats in a thrilling five set match (26-28, 25-14, 11-25, 25-20, 15-13) to open competition. UB beat Big 4 rival Niagara on Saturday in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-21), but lost to Cornell in the final match of the weekend (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 13-25).

Duquesne leads the all-time series against the Bulls, 7-4. The Bulls won the last meeting on Sept. 10, 2021, in a sweep. The Dukes are off to a great start of the season as they're one of the best offensive teams in the country. They are third in the NCAA in both kills per set and assists per set with 14.89 and 13.89, respectively.

Against the Robert Morris Colonials, the Bulls are 13-1. However, the Colonials won the last meeting on Sept. 2, 2016. Robert Morris is off to a slow start as they only have wins over FDU and UMES. Defensively, they are averaging 15.12 digs per set which is 66th in the nation.

ABOUT THE BULLS
 • Junior Manoela Forlin is the only Bull to have 10+ kills in every match of the season thus far. This included a season-high 18 kills against Marist.

• The Bulls currently have the second-best hitting percentage in the MAC at .238, good for 31st in the nation.

• The freshmen trio of Maddie MitchellSydney Bell and Emerson Matthews have account­ed for 47.3% of the team's kill total with 161 of the 340. They have a combined .224 hitting percentage on the season.

• The Bulls are 9-1 in sets where they reach 15 first, but are 3-14 when the opposition gets to 15 first.

• The Bulls are 61st in the nation averaging 1.81 aces per set this season. This mark is good for third in the MAC.

Miami Volleyball returns to Coach Carolyn Condit Court at Millett Hall to host Northern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. Friday before traveling to NKU for a Saturday afternoon match. The RedHawks won the Miami Best Western Invitational over the weekend, going 2-1 with wins against Middle Tennessee and Duquesne.
