MAC Volleyball Earns Team Academic Award From AVCA

BALL STATE - The Ball State women's volleyball program was one of a record number of more than 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball teams nationwide to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT for the 2024-25 season.

The Cardinals, who claimed the honor for the ninth straight season and the 15th time overall, also garnered Team Academic Honor Roll status after placing in the top 20% of team GPAs from the 233 NCAA Division I programs to receive the honor.

Overall, Ball State's student-athletes finished the 2024-25 academic year with a 3.71 team GPA. In addition, 15 of the Cardinals' 17 countable student-athletes maintained at least a 3.50 GPA during the school year, with sophomore Reese Baker, sophomore Lindsey Green, freshman Sophie Ledbetter and senior Megan Wielonski all boasting perfect 4.00 GPAs.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball programs which display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

BOWLING GREENFor the 25th consecutive year and 26th total year, the Bowling Green State University volleyball program has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, sponsored by INTENT. To qualify, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Additionally, the Falcons earned the Honor Roll distinction as part of the top 20-percent of team GPAs in Division I, a recognition only 47 teams received. 

BGSU's 25-year streak is tied for the second longest in Division I with Toledo and behind only Indiana State (27 years). Overall, this award marked the 26th in program history for the Falcons, ranking third among NCAA Division I programs. Indiana State and Morehead State are tied for the most with 27 awards. 

This is the sixth season the Falcons have been named to the AVCA Academic Honor Roll, previously receiving the honor in 2018 and 2020, in addition to the last four years. Bowling Green is one of just seven teams in the nation to be named to the AVCA Academic Honor Roll each of the last four seasons, being joined by Harvard, Kansas, Memphis, Northern Iowa, South Dakota and Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the accomplishment. 

As a team, the Falcons posted a cumulative GPA of 3.793 with 11 student-athletes making the Dean's List and nine posting a 4.000 term GPA in the spring. 

Bowling Green will return to Mo and Jon Stansbery Court at the Stroh Center on Aug. 23 for an exhibition against Youngstown State, set for a 1 p.m. first serve. The regular season for the Orange and Brown will begin on the road on Aug. 29 with matches against both Temple and North Dakota State, beginning the day at 2 p.m. EST. The regular season home opener for BGSU is scheduled for Sept. 17 against Oakland, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. 

BUFFALO - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Monday afternoon that the University at Buffalo volleyball program was one of more than 1,450 college and high school programs that have earned the USMC/AVCA Academic Award for the 2024-25 season. This marks the program's sixth consecutive year earning this honor.

As a team, the Bulls finished with a 3.628 GPA this past season.

"I am especially proud what this group has done both in the classroom and on the court," stated Head Coach Scott Smith.

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.

EASTERN MICHIGAN - For the 21st consecutive academic year, the Eastern Michigan University Volleyball program has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the association announced Monday, July 21.
 
Eastern volleyball continued its tradition of academic excellence as its 21-year streak stands as the third-longest in NCAA Division I. Moreover, it is one of three NCAA Division I programs to earn the award for at least 25 academic years, along with fellow Mid-American Conference institutions Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo.
 
The team landed on the list as it currently holds a 3.673 cumulative GPA, the highest mark in program history. Most recently in the 2025 winter semester, the team posted a 3.715 with 20 Eagles recording at least a 3.00 and four notching a perfect 4.00.  
 
Several Green & White student-athletes earned individual academic honors as Hannah BlaneyKendal BonneyAbby Stanfordand Maddie Stayer earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, Dec. 17, while Bonney, Stanford, and Surabhi Srinivasan landed on the Academic All-MAC list, Dec. 30.

KENT STATE  - Kent State Volleyball has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 15th time in program history, as the organization announced recipients for the 2024-25 academic year on Monday.

More than 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball programs maintained a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale), to earn the award for their classroom excellence during the recently completed academic year.

MIAMI - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today that 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball teams earned the 2025 AVCA Team Academic Award by maintaining a year-long grade-point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale). Miami University was among the honored recipients.

The RedHawks boasted a team GPA of 3.575 for the 2024-25 school year to qualify.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS - The Northern Illinois University Huskies volleyball program has been named a recipient of the 2025 AVCA Team Academic Award, sponsored by INTENT, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association today (July 21).
 
This is the tenth time in program history the Huskies have earned this honor.
 
Over 1,450 teams from both high school and collegiate division earned the honor this year. In order to be eligible, teams must maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. NIU posted a 3.391 GPA during the 2024-25 academic year.
 
The Huskies saw seven athletes earning Academic All-MAC honors in December 2024 with two Huskies earning CSC Academic All-District honors in the fall.

OHIO - The Ohio volleyball team has been selected as one of the programs to receive the 2025 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team (AVCA) Academic Award, as announced on Monday, July 21.

Ohio is among 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained a year-long GPA of at least 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) or 4.1 (on a 5.0 scale).

Ohio has earned the honor 16 times in program history and eight seasons in a row.

TOLEDO - The Toledo women's volleyball program has earned its 25th-straight AVCA Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Monday.

The AVCA honored more than 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball teams who maintained a year-long grade-point average of at least a 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.

Toledo, Bowling Green (25) and Indiana State (27) are the only three NCAA Division I schools that have won the AVCA Team Academic Award for at least 25-straight seasons.

The Rockets posted a 3.458 team GPA in the 2025 spring semester and placed eight student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC team last fall including returners Anna AlfordMacy MedorsBrooke NaniseniKayla Ozanich and Sierra Pertzborn.

WESTERN MICHIGAN - The Western Michigan volleyball program has received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT for the 2024-25 academic year. Additionally, the Broncos earned the distinction of AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll, which represents the top 20% of GPAs nationally by division, for the second consecutive year.

Initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, the AVCA Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT honors volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.

Western Michigan earned the Team Academic Award for the sixth consecutive season and the 12th time overall, 11 of which have come under head coach Colleen Munson. Last fall, the Broncos had nine student-athletes named Academic All-MAC, with Reeghan BoyerMary Clare BrusekAnna CalcagnoLogan CaseAmanda GlantonJulia MarrMadison MerzKeona Salesman and Andelyn Simkins all earning the honor.

Additionally, WMU had four (Calcagno, Case, Salesman and Simkins) receive College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team accolades, with Case then becoming the first student-athlete in program history to be named an Academic All-American three years in a row.
