AVON, Ohio – Miami earned its second win of the MAC tournament Saturday, downing second seeded Kent State 6-1. Cooper Katskee pitched all nine innings, holding the Flashes to just one run. Miami improves to 34-21 (23-7 MAC) with the win, while Kent State falls to 38-17 (23-7 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Katskee started on the mound for Miami and recorded two quick strikeouts and a popout to hold Kent State to a scoreless first inning.
- The Golden Flashes scored their first run in the second inning with a double and an RBI single.
- After two quick outs in the bottom of the second, Ty Batusich singled to left field. Tommy Harrison crushed a homer to right field to put Miami ahead 2-1.
- Still with two outs, Blake Buzzeo reached first on a passed ball and advanced to second on another passed ball. Dillon Baker and Ryan Novak each walked, loading the bases for the RedHawks. Anthony Zarlingo singled up the middle, bringing around two runs for Miami to stretch the lead to 4-1 through two innings.
- Katskee saw three up, three down in the third, recording a lineout and two strikeouts.
- Buzzeo led off the bottom of the fourth with a first-pitch single to left field and stole second base. Baker drove him in with a single to left, making it 5-1. Zarlingo walked and Evan Appelwick singled through to left, scoring Baker to take a 6-1 lead.
- Katskee once again saw three up, three down in the sixth and seventh innings, holding the Flashes to one run through seven innings.
- Katskee struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth, and the third grounded out. He earned a complete game, giving up just five hits, one run and two walks while striking out eight batters.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Katskee secured his 11th win of the season, tying him for second in the nation.
- Katskee threw third complete game of the year, tying him for third in the nation.
- Buzzeo went 2-for-4 with two runs.
