Blackwell, Wright Dubbed Scholar Athletes of the Week

The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and/or female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).

MALE WINNER
Institution:
 Bowling Green
Name: Garrett Wright
Sport: Baseball
Position: Catcher
Year: Sophomore
GPA: 4.000
Major: Criminal Justice
Week’s Achievements (detailed description of week’s events): Garrett Wright had a strong week for the Falcons at the plate. In a three-game series vs. Miami where BGSU plated 13 runs, Wright scored five of them and drove in an addition four, leaving just four runs from the weekend that he didn't either score himself or record as an RBI. Additionally, Wright maintained a .500 batting average with six hits, including both of BGSU's home runs over the course of the weekend series, a battle of the top-two teams in the MAC. Wright was also hit-by-a-pitch three times, bringing his season total to 15, which is tied for second in program history behind only his own program record of 21 from last season. Wright is now in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak and an 18-game on-base streak. On top of that, he's scored in seven consecutive games for the Falcons as well as 17 of the last 18 with a total of 30 runs scored over the last 18 games and 12 over the last seven.

FEMALE WINNER
Institution:
 Eastern Michigan University
Name: Mackenzie Blackwell
Sport: Lacrosse
Position: Attack
Year: Junior
GPA: 3.94
Major: Marketing
Week’s Achievements (detailed description of week’s events):
Blackwell turned in a pair of hat tricks as she scored three at No. 16 Michigan before scoring a season-high-tying five in a crucial win over Detroit Mercy, finishing the week with eight goals on 14 shots with 11 shots on goal. Blackwell, who recorded her second hat trick of the season against a nationally-ranked foe (3 at No. 11 Notre Dame), has tallied 10 hat tricks this season, which ties her own school record, while bringing her season goal total to 42, leaving her seven shy of tying her own EMU record (49) set last year. All told, Blackwell, who has 27 career hat tricks, scored one free-position goal with the rest coming during the run of play. Blackwell leads the MAC in total goals (42) and goals per game average (3.5).
