TOLEDO, Ohio – For the fourth time in program history, the Buffalo Bulls have won the MAC Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament title, after upsetting No.2 Northern Illinois 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts in Toledo, Ohio.
It is UB's first tournament championship since 2018 and fourth in program history.
The Bulls won the doubles point in dramatic fashion as
Marta Giglio and
Liv Roestel won 6-3 at third doubles and
Esmee Andresen and
Maria Glowacka rallied from being down 5-1 in a tiebreak to win 7-6 and put UB up 1-0.
Freshman
Blanca Berges came up big once again, winning her second straight tournament match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. Later,
Jagmeet Kaur picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at second singles and then just minutes later, Roestel played the hero as she won 6-4, 7-5 at fifth singles to clinch the championship for the Bulls.
Roestel and Kaur were named to the All-Tournament team with Kaur taking home Most Valuable Player honors.
"It's a little bit unbelievable at the moment," said head coach
Kristen Maines. "The build that we had off yesterday, the tenacity that this team had, the grit, all the things that we talked about all season long to get to this point and be in the finals of this tournament, it all came together. Seniors, freshmen, everybody in between stepped up like I hadn't seen all year and I could not be more proud of them. They embraced everything, they listened, we said task oriented and that's exactly what they did."
The 2025 NCAA Women's Tennis Selection show will be held on Monday, April 28 at 5:30pm, where the Bulls will await their next opponent. A watch party will be held at the Anchor Bar on Maple Road. More details to come.
