MAC Men’s Tennis Championship Begins Saturday Morning in Kalamazoo!

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The battle for the 2025 MAC Men’s Tennis Tournament Championship title kicks off on Saturday morning as Ball State, Buffalo, UIC, and Western Michigan begin competition in Kalamazoo, Mich. The tournament champion will be crowned on Sunday afternoon, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship.

Below are the team previews in order of tournament seeding, courtesy of Athletic Communications Departments

No.1 Buffalo (16-5, 9-1 MAC)
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team (16-5, 9-1 MAC) heads to Kalamazoo this weekend for the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament. 

The Bulls enter the tournament as the top seed and will take on #4 Ball State in the first semifinal match of the day on Saturday at 10am. The hosts, #3 Western Michigan, will face #2 UIC in the second semifinal match of the day at 2pm.

Saturday's semifinal winners will play for the championship match on Sunday at 1pm, with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Buffalo ended the regular season with a 16-5 overall record and a 9-1 mark in league play and swept their regular season matchups with the Cardinals. UB has presented a balanced attack in singles action with six players recording double-digit win totals on the season, led by junior Faiz Nasyam who has 23 and senior Cheng Tang who has recorded 17 wins. Fellow senior Daniils Snaiders (16), Theodoros Mitsakos (16), sophomore Michael Malkin (15) and senior Clement Mainguy (14) have also reached double digit wins. In doubles play, the Bulls have been led by Mitsakos and Mainguy who own a team-best 10 doubles victories and Nasyam and Emiliano Jorquera who are a perfect 8-0 when paired together.

Ball State enters the weekend with an 11-10 overall record and a 4-6 mark in league play. They defeated Northern Illinois before falling to UIC in the regular season finale last weekend. The Cardinals are led by Jacks Lancaster and Mason Tran who have recorded 12 singles victories each. They are balanced in doubles action as they have used 18 different doubles pairings, led by Lancaster and Tran who own a 7-4 record as a duo.

No.2 UIC (16-5, 7-3 MAC)

No.3 Western Michigan (16-10, 6-4 MAC)
The Western Michigan men's tennis team is set to host the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament, beginning on Saturday. Top-seeded Buffalo takes on Ball State at 10 a.m. and the Broncos host UIC at 2 p.m. 

The MAC Tournament Championship Match will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission for the entire tournament is free, with the location to be determined depending on weather. Live scoring for every match is available at www.WMUSTATS.com.

The Broncos (16-10, 6-4) finished the conference season with a 6-4 record. WMU's conference losses came only to Buffalo and UIC, dropping the season series to both. 

Senior Anton Arzhankin has had another exceptional season in MAC play, going 8-1 as the Broncos' No. 1. His only loss came due to a withdrawal after an injury. Sophomore Ashton Adesoro is 5-5 in MAC play, with the bulk of it coming as WMU's No. 2, where he is 12-8 overall. Freshman Oscar Corwin has recently taken over the No. 3 singles spot and has gone 6-4 there. He also has an 8-5 record at No. 4 and was 5-5 overall in MAC play. Senior Brogan Pierce has been at the No. 4 spot recently, posting a 3-0 record. He is 4-6 overall in MAC play, while freshman Alex Antonopoulos has locked down the No. 5 singles spot. Sophomore Matej Kajzer has been WMU's regular No. 6, posting a 6-5 record and going 4-3 in MAC play. Pierce and Drew Evans have been WMU's steady No. 1 doubles pair, posting a 6-5 record and going 4-4 in MAC play. Arzhankin and Corwin have played the No. 2 spot, going 4-2 and 3-3 overall in the MAC. Adesoro and freshman Jack Davison are 7-1 at No. 6 and 3-0 at No. 2, while posting a 6-1 record in MAC play. 

No.4 Ball State (11-10, 4-6 MAC)
The Ball State men's tennis team will be the No. 4 seed in this weekend's 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament which will be hosted by No. 3 Western Michigan. The Cardinals are set to face top-seeded Buffalo on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET. 

The tournament will be played either indoors at the West Hills Athletic Club or outdoors at Sorensen Courts, weather permitting. Ball State enters the tournament with an 11-10 overall record for the year. The Cardinals lost their two-match home and away series against the 2025 MAC regular season champions Buffalo, losing at home 6-1 and then falling to the Bulls later in season by a score of 4-3 in Buffalo. 

The last time the Cardinals competed at the MAC Tourney was in 2024 in Toledo, Ohio where they fell to Western Michigan in the semifinals. Ball State has not reached the title match since 2019, falling in the championship match to the Broncos.

Ball State last won the MAC Tournament title in 2014 by defeating Buffalo, 4-3, at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards has led the program to 38 MAC tournament and or regular season titles over his 53 year tenure with the Cardinals. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won it seven times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2011, and 2014.) 

Ball State won its first MAC Championship in 1984 at Western Michigan. The Cardinals went on to win in Kalamazoo three more times after that, in 1991, 2005 and 2011.

A Ball State win will advance the Cardinals to the final round against No. 2 Illinois-Chicago or No. 3 Western Michigan at 1 pm ET Sunday.
