EAST LANSING, Mich. – A mid-week matchup with an instate foe, and a mid-week victory for Central Michigan Softball.
The Chippewas defeated Michigan State 4-0 at Secchia Stadium to collect their second win over a Big Ten opponent this season. CMU moves to 11-15 on the season and MSU falls to 9-16. Central Michigan will travel to Buffalo, N.Y. this weekend for three Mid-American Conference games against the Bulls.
The Chippewas wasted no times grabbing their runs to secure the victory over the Spartans, scoring all four in the first two innings.
A three-run first inning sent Brooklyn Compau to the circle with confidence, and CMU charted one more in the second to reach the 4-0 final score.
The game started with a walk to freshman leadoff hitter, Tori Briggs. Allyssa Hollo was responsible for the first two runs scored by CMU, with a double to right center, scoring London Williams who reached via single and Carly Sleeman who reached with a fielder's choice.
Hollo added the third run in the inning from an RBI single from Grace Koenig; 3-0 Chippewas.
The run in the second inning came when Williams drew a bases loaded walk and Maddison Diekman scored after reaching on a bunt single.
Compau, who collected her fourth victory of her sophomore season, lasted the entire seven innings for CMU, throwing just 96 pitches, striking out five to tie a season high, allowing just four hits.
Two of the hits recorded by MSU came from their leadoff batter, but both times, that player was thrown out attempting to steal second by the Chippewa catcher, Carly Sleeman.
Central Michigan charted nine hits in the game compared to the four from MSU. Emma Lotus recorded two hits for CMU, a single and a double, while Diekman also had two singles, one a base hit and the other a bunt for a hit. Seven total Chippewas recorded a hit in the game.
The victory over Michigan State charts the third power conference victory for sixth year Head Coach, McCall Salmon. Salmon's message to the team pregame was simple: another opportunity to compete and play the game the team loves.
They just did that.
CMU had not defeated Michigan State since 2017, when the Chippewas hosted the Spartans in Mount Pleasant.
2017 is the last time the Chippewas were regular season Mid-American Conference Champions.
