BUFFALO, NY – The University at men's tennis team completed the weekend sweep with a 5-2 win over UIC on Saturday afternoon at Miller Tennis Center. With the win, the Bulls improve to 4-1 in conference play.
The Bulls started strong, sweeping doubles action as
Daniils Snaiders and
Cheng Tang won 6-4 at first singles and
Theodoros Mitsakos and
Michael Malkin and
Faiz Nasyam and
Emiliano Jorquera followed with 6-4 victories of their own at the second and third positions to give UB a 1-0 lead in the match.
Malkin gave the Bulls their first point in singles action with a 6-3, 6-4 win at fourth singles and Jorquera picked up a 6-0, 7-6 victory at the sixth position to put UB up 3-0. UIC got on the board with a win at first singles, but Nasyam answered with an emotional 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) win at the fifth position to clinch the match for UB. Snaiders rounded out the scoring for Buffalo with a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 win at third singles.
Up next, Buffalo will remain home for a pair of matches, beginning on Thursday, March 27 as they host Western Michigan at Miller Tennis Center at 1pm.
Western Michigan 4, Ball State 3
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up its second-straight win in Mid-American Conference play after defeating Ball State, 4-3, at West Hills Athletic club on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos (13-8, 3-2 MAC) started off by taking the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins.
Ashton Adesoro and
Jack Davison moved up to the No. 2 slot from their usual No. 3 and won 6-1 against Nathaniel Webster and Drew Hayward. Freshmen
Oscar Corwin and
Alex Antonopoulos then defeated Sanjin Smith and Ian Brady at No. 3.
The Cardinals tied it up at 1-1 when Webster defeated Adesoro 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 and then took a 2-1 lead after a 7-5, 6-3 win by Drew Hayward over Davison at No. 5. Sophomore
Matej Kajzer squared the match up at 2-2 after defeating Brady 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 but the Cardinals retook the lead when Lancaster defeated
Brogan Pierce at No. 2 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. Antonopoulos struck back for the Broncos and tied it up at 3-3 with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 win over Smith at No. 4.
The match came down to the No. 3 singles battle between Corwin and BSU's Mason Tran. Tran took the first set, 6-4. Tran was on the verge of the win with a 6-5 lead in the second set but Corwin scored three straight points while down 40-15 to force the tie-breaker. Corwin was up against it with Tran having a match-point advantage three times before Corwin on the marathon set 7-6 (13-11). Corwin then took the third set 6-2 to hand the Broncos the match victory.
Western Michigan is on the road next week, heading to Buffalo on Thursday and Toledo on Sunday.
Toledo 5, Northern Illinois 2
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team claimed its third-straight win over a Mid-American Conference opponent with a 5-2 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. The Rockets move to an impressive 8-0 when playing on their home court this season.
Toledo (9-6, 3-2 MAC) grabbed an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point.
Hanamichi Carvajal and Komolpisut earned a 6-1 win on the No. 1 court while
Lucas Britez and Mackey took a 6-2 win on the No. 2 court to claim the point.
Matias Olivero and
Charlie Snow were ahead 3-2 on the No. 3 court before abandoning the match.
In singles play, Britez gave Toledo a 2-0 lead after defeating NIU's Iker Dellien on the No. 5 court 6-2, 6-0. The Huskies responded with a straight set win on the No. 2 court to cut Toledo's lead in half, 2-1. Mackey and Komolpisut clinched their matches in straight sets on the No. 4 and No. 1 singles courts, respectively, within seconds of each other to tally match point, 4-1. Komolpisut has won three-straight singles matchups against conference foes and has an overall record of 10-4.
Olivero followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win on the No. 3 court to put the Rockets in front, 5-1. The junior is now 5-0 in singles play against MAC opponents and has won eight consecutive singles matchups, dating back to Feb. 22 against Cleveland State. Sophomore
Charlie Snow concluded the match after falling in a tiebreaker on the No. 6 court to record the final score, 5-2.
