ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Western Michigan trio of Reese Gaber, Adam Lehmann and DJ Thompson combined to shutout Michigan, 6-0, on two hits in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. It marks the second straight year WMU has won in Ann Arbor, and the fourth win in the last six overall meetings with the Wolverines.
FINAL SCORE: Western Michigan 6, Michigan 0
LOCATION: Ray Fisher Stadium (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
RECORDS: Western Michigan (2-16) | Michigan (11-9)
W: Reese Gaber (1-2) | L: Grant Bradley (0-1)
Gaber got the ball rolling on the mound for the Brown and Gold. After allowing a one-out single in the first, the southpaw did not yield another hit to Michigan for the remainder of his outing. He retired nine Wolverines in a row at one point, and set down 10 of the final 11 he faced. In all, Gaber tossed 6.0 scoreless frames, allowing one hit and picking up a pair of strikeouts to earn his first win as a Bronco.
Behind Gaber, Western Michigan turned to Adam Lehmann, who posted a zero in the seventh inning. After a leadoff walk in the eighth, DJ Thompson took over on the hill for the Broncos, and proceeded to retire all six batters he faced to slam the door for WMU. It was the first shutout for the Brown and Gold over a Big Ten opponent since blanking Minnesota, 2-0, on Feb. 23, 2013.
Western Michigan pushed across three in the third to give Gaber the lead. After a walk, sacrifice bunt and error got Nolan Zajac to third, Tanner Mally brought him home with a ground ball for the first run of the contest. Later in the frame, Cooper Hums scored on a passed ball, and Dylan Nevar capped the outburst with a two-out, RBI single.
The advantage stayed at three until the seventh, when Nevar drove in another run with a base hit. The redshirt senior then capped the day's scoring with a line drive two-run homer in the ninth. The four-RBI day for Nevar brought his career total to 173, one away from tying WMU's all-time record.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ty Davis hit three home runs in his first three at bats to help lead the Ball State baseball team to a 14-10 win over Valparaiso on Tuesday afternoon at Shebek Stadium.
The Cardinals (15-6) led 3-0 after the third inning following a Davis two-run homer to left in the second and Clay Jacobs scoring on a passed ball in the third. After the Beacons (4-12) plated a run in the fourth, Davis struck again in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot to right to give the hosts a 4-1 edge.
Valpo scored seven times in the fifth inning, but Ball State responded with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame starting with an RBI triple by Dylan Grego. Blake Bevis next brought home Grego on a fielder's choice before Davis mashed another two-run homer to left to tie the score at 8-8.
Alex Richter hit a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning to take a 10-8 lead and Nick Husovsky walked with the bases loaded for an 11-8 advantage for the Cardinals. Ball State tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth inning and cruised to its 11th win in 13 tries.
Davis was the first Ball State player since Ryan Peltier on April 23, 2023 to hit three home runs in a game. The junior upped his season totals to five home runs and 12 RBI with the performance.
Richter knocked in three runs and Clay Jacobs went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Zach Leduc (3-0) was credited with the win after working 2.2 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen, while John Chambers got his second save of the year by coming on with two runners on in the ninth and notching the final three outs of the game. Valpo's Kolt Davis (0-1) surrendered three runs in two-thirds of an inning to be hit with the loss.
"Ty Davis had an amazing day to carry us," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "We had timely hitting and turned a couple of key double plays. A lot of guys contributed."

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team rallied for a two-out walk-off win on Tuesday (March 18), topping Purdue Fort Wayne, 19-18, at home. With two outs in the ninth, singles from Garrett Wright and Sam Seidel brought across the tying and go-ahead runs for the Falcons, clinching the victory and extending the team's winning streak to a season-best nine. Bowling Green advances to 14-5 on the season with another midweek on-deck tomorrow (March 19) against Dayton with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
Each team scored in the first with TJ Takats belting a home run in BGSU's first at-bat of the day, but a five-run second put the Mastodons in front 6-1. A three-run third pulled BGSU within a pair, but Purdue Fort Wayne responded with four in the fifth to extend their lead to 11-4. The Falcons again fought back, adding one in the fifth before a five-run sixth inning that saw four Mastodon pitchers, cutting the lead down to 11-10. Purdue Fort Wayne answered again with four in the seventh, but the back-and-forth continued with two from Bowling Green in the bottom half. A similar sequence unfolded in the eighth with the Mastodons scoring three before five from the Falcons to again cut the difference to one, 18-17, going into the ninth.
Connar Penrod took the bump in the ninth for the Falcons, striking out two as part of a one-two-three frame to send BGSU to the plate. The Mastodons worked for back-to-back strikeouts, but then the rally started. Takats walked before scoring on a bloop single to right from Wright, tying the game with a bang-bang slide at home. After an intentional walk to DJ Newman, Seidel delivered the walk-off hit, slipping a single down the third base line to score Wright from second for the 19-18 BGSU win.
