BOONE, N.C. — The App State field hockey team posted a 9-0 shutout over Kent State for Senior Day Friday to close out the regular season.
The nine-goal performance is the most goals scored against a MAC opponent in program history, and most scored in a game since a 10-1 win over Queens in 2022.
With the win, the Mountaineers solidified their spot as the No. 3-seed in the MAC Field Hockey Championship, facing Ohio in the first round of the tournament on Nov. 5.
Sophia Baxter, Lise Boekaar, Sarah Callery, Samantha Connors, Frederique Grimbergen, Hadley Kuzmicky, Kate Richardson and Henriette Stegen all found the back of the cage, making it six out of seven seniors to notch goals in Friday's shutout.
The Mountaineers (13-5, 7-2 MAC) got on the board twice in the first, with Baxter scoring her 13th goal of the season. Kuzmicky followed shortly, scoring off a deflection after inserting a penalty corner. The Mountaineers outshot Kent State (4-11, 3-6 MAC) 5-0 in the first.
App State tacked on another goal in the second period, with Frederique Grimbergen scoring off a goalie deflection to give the Mountaineers a three-score advantage heading into halftime.
The Mountaineer offense exploded in the second half, adding two more goals to the total. Boekaar also found her 13th goal of the season, slamming it past the goalkeeper to put App State up 4-0. Kuzmicky scored her second of the day and 10th on the season in the tail end of the period. The Mountaineers generated four penalty corners to Kent State's one.
The Mountaineer offense poured it on in the final period of the regular season, scoring four goals. Richardson scored her seventh goal of her senior season after a scrum around the goal. Stegen scored her third of the year after a pass from Kuzmicky, making it a 7-0 lead with less than 3 minutes remaining. With less than a minute in the game, Connors scored her second goal this year off a penalty corner, followed by a sliding goal from Callery to close out the 9-0 win.
The Mountaineers will hit the road for Harrisonburg, Va., for the 2025 MAC Field Hockey Championship. The No. 3-seeded Mountaineers will take on the No. 6-seeded Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 2:30 p.m., streaming on ESPN+.

Hockey earned an appearance in the Mid-American Conference Championship Tournament with Friday's 3-2 win at Bellarmine.
The Chippewas finished conference play at 4-5 with back-to-back victories in league play to qualify for the MAC tournament for the first time since 2019.
Senior Mallory Camryn opened the scoring quickly, just under four minutes into the game, beating the keeper after being fed by freshman Mora Rulli. The goal was Camryn's 50th career goal and 17th of 2025, tied third most all-time in a single season; Rulli logged her team-leading eighth assist of the season.
"Mallory getting her 50th career goal was awesome," Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone said. "To do it in a game that secured our tournament berth makes it even more special. It speaks to the impact she's had on our program over the past two seasons."
Rulli found herself in the scorebook again in the second quarter, finding a lost ball and burying it past the Knight's keeper, for a 2-0 lead. The goal was her third of the season, she stands at 16 points.
The Knights cut the lead in half with a goal midway through the third quarter with their first shot on cage.
Scoring stayed quiet until the 50th minute, when junior Cameron Pluciennik found the back of the cage for the first game-winning goal of her career. Pluciennik drove low, faked the Knights' keeper and buried the backhand.
"Mora gave us a huge push on the attack today with her goal and assist. Cameron really stepped up today when we needed it the most. They both brought what we needed all game."
"Our middies were the real workhorses for us today. They did an incredible job pushing the ball forward and connecting with our forwards in the circle. It's a reflection of the work they put in over the summer and the commitment they've shown to our team goals since preseason. Our upperclassmen have done such a great job mentoring the younger players – it's a special group."
Starting keeper Ashley Cogger faced five total shots, logged three saves.
Central Michigan Field Hockey will close out its regular season Sunday at Michigan State (Nov. 2, 1 p.m.) the 69th meeting of the programs.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison field hockey concluded the regular season with a dominant 3-1 Senior Day win over Ohio on a windy Friday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
Three seniors registered points as the Dukes (11-7, 6-3 MAC) held the Bobcats (5-12, 3-6 MAC) scoreless until the 59th minute of action.
Madelief Molier set the tone offensively with a goal and an assist for the ninth multi-point game of her sophomore campaign. Senior Maddie Tierney is credited with the game-winning goal after finding the back of the net early in the second frame. Classmate Skyler finished with a goal, while Jola Ollrogge dished out an assist.
In goal, netminder Hannah Popolis made four stops for her third career victory.
Tiana Nhamoinesu was the lone goal scorer for Ohio, converting on a penalty stroke with 1:06 remaining in the contest. Goalkeeper Ash Stephenson notched a pair of saves in the loss, giving up a pair of goals on penalty corners.
On a penalty corner, a direct shot from Ollrogge was deflected into Ohio's goalkeeper and rebounded by Tierney for the easy tap-in to make it 1-0 less than five minutes into the second period.
Sprinting across the midfield line, Anna Collinge connected with a Molier on a fast break, who sent a cross to Brow for the score to put the Dukes ahead 2-0 early in the third.
Down a player due to a card, Ollrogge sent a shot to the right post that was deflected by Molier on a penalty corner less than two minutes later to give JMU a 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth.
After an incidental kicked ball, Nhamoinesu earned a penalty stroke at the 1:06 mark. Popolis got a piece of the shot with the blocker, but it still found the back of the net for the game's final goal.
James Madison held an advantage in shots (10-6) and penalty corners (7-3).
Tierney is the sixth Duke to record a game-winning goal this season.
For the sixth time this season, JMU successfully defended each penalty corner, with Ohio going 0-for-3.
Molier's offensive output gives her the team-lead in goals (13) and points (28).
The Dukes will be the No. 4 seed in the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Championship, hosted by JMU, Nov. 5-8. As it stands, James Madison will begin in the quarterfinals with a date against No. 5 Central Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 11:30 a.m. The winner will face No. 1 Miami (Ohio) the following day at 11:30 a.m. All games will stream on ESPN+.

AMHERST, MA. -- No. 15 Massachusetts (15-3, 8-1 MAC) secured a 7-0 senior day victory over Ball State (4-15, 2-7) on Friday at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. With the win, Massachusetts claims its 17th regular season conference championship and its first as a member of the Mid-American Conference.
Seven Minutewomen were honored as part of senior day as Gabrielle Benkenstein, Elena Clococeanu, Alexa Collins, Savanna Henderson, Myrte van Herwijnen, Izzy Larimore and Mia Smith each received recognition for their contributions to the program.
The Minutewomen scored a season-high seven goals while claiming their ninth shutout of the season. Seven different Minutewomen scored in the contest, including seniors Elena Clococeanu, Alexa Collins and Mia Smith. Fellow Senior Gabrielle Benkenstein tallied a single-game career high three assists in the matchup.
Three freshmen also added to the tally as Kiran Kaur, Sophie Kent and Lina Kroeger each found the back of the net on the evening.
The Minutewomen held Ball State to just two shots as Myrte van Herwijnen saved the Cardinal's lone on-goal opportunity of the contest.
The Cardinals were led by Christine Ditizio who recorded two shots in the contest.
Massachusetts opened the scoring as Lina Kroeger fired in a drag flick just 55 seconds into the opening quarter.
Alexa Collins made it 2-0 Massachusetts, wrestling the ball away from a Ball State defender to find the net with 12:51 remaining in the opening quarter
Elena Clococeanu scored Massachusetts' third of the day, converting a penalty corner with 14:59 left in the first quarter.
Massachusetts ended the first quarter of play with a 3-0 lead and a 6-0 advantage in total shots.
Mia Smith tipped in her third goal of the season, making it 4-0 Minutewomen with 5:01 left in the first half.
Neva Eisenga sent Massachusetts to the halftime break with a 5-0 lead, scoring a short-corner goal with 0:00 on the clock.
Massachusetts tallied five shots in the third quarter, but could not add to it's advantage, holding a 5-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.
The Minutewomen pulled Myrte van Herwijnen from net with 5:50 remaining in regulation.
Kiran Kaur finished a pass from Mia Smith for Massachusetts' sixth goal of the evening with 5:38 left on the clock.
Sophie Kent punctuated the matchup with a goal of her own, giving Massachusetts a 7-0 lead with 53 seconds remaining in regulation.
The final whistle sounded with a 7-0 Massachusetts win, clinching the programs first MAC regular season title.

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami claimed the Mid-American Conference regular-season title Friday with an 8-0 home victory over Longwood. With the win, the RedHawks have captured the top seed for the MAC Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. Miami improved to 13-4 (8-1 MAC) and secured its ninth-straight regular-season championship. Longwood falls to 4-13 (2-7 MAC) with the result.
Scoring began early for Miami as Malena Sabez netted her 20th goal of the year on a penalty corner with assists from Becca Lawn and Berta Mata.
Mata earned her 18th assist of the year as Justina Intzes scored minutes later to make it 2-0.
Less than a minute later, Sloane Wearren scored off an assist by Intzes to make it 3-0.
The second period held scoreless to maintain a 3-0 lead for Miami.
Riley Mazzalupi netted her second goal of the season 20 seconds into the second half to make it 4-0. Wearren assisted. 22 seconds later, Mata found the back of the cage with an assist from Paula Navarro.
Just a minute later, Bet Gifra scored on another assist by Navarro to make it 6-0.
Another penalty corner goal from Sabez with an assist from Mata rounded out a stretch of four goals in four minutes and 14 seconds.
A fourth-quarter goal from Lucia Ventos put the exclamation point on an 8-0 win to clinch the MAC regular-season title.
Miami took 43 shots (26 on goal) and held the Lancers to three (one on goal).
Miami earned 15 penalty corners and held Longwood to one. Sabez went 2-for-12 with six shots on goal.
Mazzalupi went 1-for-2.Mata went 1-for-5 with four shots on goal and three assists.
Gifra went 1-for-7 with five shots on goal. Navarro had two assists. Imke Breedijk took two shots.
With her 18th assist of the year, Mata broke the all-time program record for single-season assists set in 2024 by Carlie Servis.
The win marked Miami's seventh shutout of the season.
The RedHawks will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. next week to play for their eighth-straight MAC Tournament title.
