EAST LANSING, Mich. — The App State field hockey team defeated Michigan State 3-1 on Sunday.
The victory marks the Mountaineers' first win against a Big Ten opponent in program history and their first over Michigan State (previously falling 0-3 in 2000).
Sophia Baxter, Kate Richardson and Henriette Stegen all scored in the first half of the nonconference matchup.
Goalkeeper Claire Grenis had a career day, tallying a season-high nine saves while anchoring 13 Michigan State (3-9, 0-4 Big Ten) penalty corners and holding the Spartans to one goal.
The Mountaineers (10-3, 4-1 MAC) opened the game controlling most of the possession, earning two corners and three shots. Baxter scored first off a penalty corner, assisted by Hadley Kuzmicky on the insert. Stegen then scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Lise Boekaar, who got the ball back in scoring position after inserting the second corner of the period.
App State continued to put pressure on the Spartans in the second quarter, forcing two more corners and three saves from the Michigan State goalkeeper. Richardson scored the third goal for the Mountaineers early in the period, backhanding the shot through off a Frederique Grimbergen pass. The Mountaineers led 3-0 at the halftime break.
The Spartans came out aggressive in the third, earning six corners. Grenis had a strong period, tallying five saves to keep the Spartans off the board on set pieces, allowing the one goal of the period off a fast break.
Michigan State continued to control the ball in the final period, adding on five more penalty corners, but failing to convert on chances. Grenis tallied two more saves in the period to bring her total tally to nine, the highest this season for the graduate student.
The Mountaineers will hit the road for Farmville, Va. to take on the Longwood Lancers on Friday. First touch at the Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field is slated for 2 p.m., streaming on ESPN+.
