Serves Up: MAC Men’s Tennis Begins 2025 Season!

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference men’s tennis programs kick off the 2025 spring schedule, as Ball State, Western Michigan, and Buffalo take the court this weekend. The remaining three MAC teams will begin their respective schedules the following weekend.

The 2025 MAC Men’s Tennis Championship will be hosted by last season’s Regular Season Champion, Western Michigan on April 19-20 at the Sorensen Courts/ West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Ball State Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Action at No.25 Michigan on Saturday
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team begins its 2025 season when it travels to No. 25 Michigan Saturday for a 5 pm ET first serve at the Varsity Tennis Center.
 
The Cardinals and the Wolverines have met a total of 13 times with Michigan leading the all-time series record, 13-0. Ball State and Michigan last met in 2009 on Jan. 24 in Ann Arbor with the Cardinals losing that match-up, 6-1. 
 
Ball State returns seven veterans to the court: Broc FletcherDrew HaywardJacks LancasterPetar PetrovicSajin SmithMason Tran and Nathaniel Webster while welcoming transfers Ian Brady (Marquette) and Anthony Shalakov (Army) along with freshman Jenson Bicanic.
 
Long time head coach Bill Richards is still at the helm of the Cardinals. He has led the program to 38 MAC tournament and or regular season titles over his tenure with the Cardinals. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won it seven times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2011, and 2014.) Richards enters the 2025 season with an overall career mark of 758-471 (.616).
 
After this weekend, Ball State will play its second-straight Big Ten opponent when it travels to Indiana University on Jan. 18 for a 4 pm ET first serve in Bloomington.
 
Western Michigan Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season with Two Matches at Notre Dame on Sunday 
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opens its 2025 Spring Season with a double-header at the University of Notre Dame on Sunday against Duquense and the Fighting Irish.
 
The Broncos open the day against the Dukes at 2 p.m. and compete against UND at 6:30 p.m. at Eck Tennis Pavilion.
 
Western Michigan is coming off a historic Fall Season that saw senior Anton Arzhankin compete at the NCAA Men's Singles Championship. It was the first time a Bronco had done so since Bob Learman in 1977. Arzhankin won the MAC Indoor Qualifying Event to earn a spot at the ITA Conference Masters Tournament. From there he earned wins in the Round of 16 and the Quarterfinals to advance to the Semifinals, where he fell in two sets to Pacific's Tiago Silva. All four semifinalists from the tournament then advanced to the NCAA Men's Singles Championship.
 
Entering Sunday's game will also be WMU's nationally-ranked doubles team of senior Brogan Pierce and freshman Jack Davison. After winning the MAC Indoor Qualifying Event and competing at the ITA Conference Masters Tournament, Pierce and Davison open 2025 ranked 109th in the ITA Men's Doubles rankings. The duo went 5-1 in the Fall.
 
Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo for two matches on Friday as part of a Bronco Tennis Triple-Header. The men open the day against Marquette at 10 a.m., with the women's team taking on the Golden Eagles at 2 p.m. The men are then back in action at 6 p.m. against Ferris State. All three matches will be at West Hills Athletic Club and admission is free.
