ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Parker Navarro threw a pair of touchdown passes to Coleman Owen and ran for a third as Ohio rolled to a 30-10 win over in-state rival Akron in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon.

Mason Williams recovered an Akron fumble in the end zone for the Bobcat’s first touchdown and Marcel Walker-Burgess sacked Akron quarterback Ben Finley in the end zone for a third-quarter safety.

Garrison Smith kicked a 49-yard first-quarter field goal to give Akron the early lead and Finley threw a 17-yard touchdown to Jake Newell to put the Zips up 10-7 with 1:20 left in the first half, but Navarro needed just over a minute to drive Ohio 75 yards in seven plays to take the lead, hitting Owen from 18 yards out to take a 14-10 halftime lead.

Owen and Navarro combined on a 75-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and Navarro put the game away by capping a 10-play, 85-yard drive with a 3-yard score in the game’s final minute.

KENT, Ohio (AP) — Delbert Mimms III ran for two touchdowns and a career-high 145 yards and Eastern Michigan beat winless Kent State 52-33 on Saturday in a Mid-American Conference opener.

It was the first 100-yard rushing day for an Eastern Michigan running back since Samson Evans ran for 127 yards against Buffalo on Nov. 23, 2023.

Mimms busted loose for a 27-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, and he added another 27-yard score that stretched the Eagles’ lead to 45-21 about a minute into the fourth.

Elijah Jackson-Anderson had a pair of short touchdown runs for Eastern Michigan (4-1, 1-0), which finished with 273 yards on the ground. Quarterback Cole Snyder and Deion Brown also had touchdown runs.

Kent State tied the game three times, the last with Tommy Ulatowski’s 65-yard touchdown pass to Chrishon McCray on the second play of the second half that made it 21-all.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Tristan Mattson kicked three field goals, including a 46-yarder with 5 seconds remaining, to rally Central Michigan to a 22-21 victory over San Diego State on Saturday.

Mattson’s game-winning kick came after Joe Labas directed a 15-play, 52-yard drive in the final two minutes.

Labas’ 8-yard scoring toss to Marion Lukes and Mattson’s 25-yard field goal helped Central Michigan (3-2) take a 10-7 lead after one quarter.

Danny O’Neil and Jude Wolfe teamed up for 5- and 26-yard touchdowns in the second quarter and San Diego State (1-3) took a 21-13 lead into halftime.

Labas completed 27 of 43 passes for 275 yards with one interception for the Chippewas. B.J. Harris had a 1-yard touchdown run at the end of a 15-play, 77-yard drive in the third quarter but the two-point conversion failed and the Chippewas trailed 21-19 heading to the fourth.

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — Dom Dzioban kicked a career-long 47-yard field on the last play of regulation and then hit from 43 yards in overtime to give Miami (OH) a 23-20 win over Massachusetts on Saturday.

UMass took a 20-17 lead with 40 seconds left when Jacob Lurie kicked a 23-yard field goal. The RedHawks then went from their 25 to the UMass 29 on five completions and a keeper by Brett Gabbert to set up Dzioban.

The Minutemen then ruined their overtime possession, nullifying a first down with an illegal formation and on the next play losing a touchdown pass because of an illegal man downfield. That put the ball on the 26 and after a completion Lurie pushed a 44-yard field goal attempt wide.

Miami didn’t gain any ground in the overtime but Dzioban’s line-drive kick just cleared the crossbar.

Gabbert was 16-of-25 passing for 181 yards and a touchdown but he also had a costly interception deep in the red zone for the RedHawks (1-3). Keyon Mozee had 114 yards rushing on nine carries and a touchdown.
