OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-American Conference was represented by Toledo's Maxen Hook, Central Michigan's Donte Kent and Bowling Green's Jordan Oladokun on the preseason watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, as announced by the Oklahoam Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Association today. The award is presented annually to the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character.
Hook's selection also marked back-to-back seasons a Rocket has been selected for the Jim Thorpe watch list. All-American cornerback Quinyon Mitchell was named to the preseason list before the 2023 season. Hook totaled 69 tackles including 37 solo stops, despite missing five games last year due to injury. He also produced four pass breakups, a team-high three interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Oladokun was a second-team All-MAC honoree in 2023 and a Hero Sports Group of Five first-team All-American. Oladokun is one of eight FBS players returning in 2024 who finished the 2023 season with 4+ interceptions, 30+ tackles, 6+ PBUs, and at least one pick-6. Oladokun is also a nominee for the AllState AFCA Good Works Team.
This list includes 42 of the nation’s best defensive backs, representing nine conferences and one independent university. The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee whose members compile a list of up to 50 players based on previous performance in NCAA Division I college football and preseason All-America lists. This list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons may be added to the semifinalists and finalists lists as the season progresses.
