OXFORD, Ohio – The No. 3 Miami University field hockey team took their seventh-straight Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon, outmaneuvering No. 1 James Madison University 3-0. The RedHawks move to 13-7 on the season. James Madison finishes their season 14-6.
Under two minutes into the game, Paula Peña Martinez got the RedHawks out to a 1-0 lead on a penalty corner. She was assisted by Berta Mata and Henriette Schlueter. The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the first quarter.
The Red and White held their 1-0 lead through the end of the first half.
Just over a minute into the third quarter Claudia Negrete Garcia scored off a perfect deflection from Carlie Servis to double the lead, 2-0. This lead was held through the end of the third.
Servis scored under two minutes into the fourth quarter off a brilliant pass from Negrete Garcia to make it a 3-0 game.
The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the game to claim their seventh-straight MAC Tournament Championship.
Four RedHawks took spots on the All-Tournament Team, including Negrete Garcia, Mata, Becca Lawn, and Paula Navarro.
The RedHawks now have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They will learn their fate at the selection show on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 10 p.m.
