MAC Announces 2024 Volleyball All-MAC/ Specialty Award Recipients

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference revealed its 2024 Volleyball All-MAC teams, along with the Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Setter of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year, as voted by the league's head coaches.

Bowling Green’s Danijela Tomic was named MAC Coach of the Year after the Flacons captured the outright MAC Regular Season title, the eighth in program history. The Falcons wrapped up the regular season with a 16-2 MAC record, marking just the third time in program history winning 16 or more matches during an 18-match conference schedule. BGSU won 16 in 2021 and 17 in 1992. Bowling Green enters the postseason with 11 straight match wins, the longest winning streak since tallying 12 consecutive wins during the 2021 season.

Bowling Green’s Lauryn Hovey took home the 2024 MAC Player of the Year. Hovey, a two-time MAC Player of the Week this year, was a dominant six-rotation player in the MAC this season, ranking third in points (4.29/set), fifth in kills/set (3.57), and seventh in aces (.34/set). Hovey’s 48 aces on the season rank 22nd nationally. This year, Hovey reached 115 career aces in the Orange and Brown on Oct. 4, breaking the program's Rally Scoring Era record that was previously held by Paige Penrod. The following night, Hovey registered her 1,000th career kill and currently sits at 1,183 heading into the postseason.

Western Michigan’s Andelyn Simkins earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second year in a row. Simkins collected three MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times this season. She ranked second in the MAC with 4.52 digs/set, owned a .941 reception percentage (286-of-304) in league play, and recorded double-digit digs in 16 of 18 conference matches. Simkins had the Broncos atop the conference in digs/set (15.82) and fourth in opposing hitting percentage (.189).

Central Michigan’s Allie Korba was tabbed Setter of the Year. Korba led the Chippewas to a historic season from the setter position, tallying 796 assists in MAC play this year, good for 11.06/set. Throughout MAC play, Korba charted five games with 12+ assists/set. In conference play, the Chippewas posted a .258 team hitting percentage capped off with 13.68 kills/set for the team, with five attackers reaching 2.3 kills/set or higher. Korba led the Chippewas in a 5-1 offense in conference play and wasted no time making the impact of her team felt in the league.

Ball State’s Carson Tyler rounded out the specialty awards by earning Freshman of the Year honors. Tyler led all MAC freshmen with 211 kills and a 3.35 kills-per-set average in league play. She smashed double-digit kills in 14 of BSU’s 18 league matches, including a career-high 23 at CMU on Oct. 4. Tyler tied for ninth in league play with a 0.33 aces-per-set average, served up 21 total aces, ranked third on the squad in MAC play with 2.08 digs per set, registering five kill/dig double-doubles. Tyler led Ball State as a whole with a .965 (362 for 375) reception percentage in MACtion.
