EVANSTON, Ill. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Miami University field hockey team claimed a 2-1 win over the University of Vermont in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Miami moves to 14-7 on the season and Vermont ends their season 11-9.
Just over one and a half minutes into the first quarter, Reese Wearren scored to grab a 1-0 lead for the RedHawks. She collected a shot off the post from Henriette Schlueter to sink the goal. The Red and White held this through the end of the first.
The score remained 1-0 through the end of the first half of play.
With under a minute remaining in the third quarter, Vermont scored to tie the game 1-1 heading into the final quarter.
Two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Paula Navarro scored on a penalty corner to take back the lead, 2-1. The rebound from Claudia Negrete Garcia's shot gave Navarro the scoring opportunity.
The RedHawks held this 2-1 lead through the end of the game to secure an NCAA Tournament victory for the fourth consecutive season.
The RedHawks will face No. 2 Northwestern University on Friday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. ET in Evanston in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament.
