MAC Cross Country Recap Week 6

Akron 
The University of Akron cross country team turned in strong individual performances to highlight the efforts of the Zips at Falcon Invitational hosted by Bowling Green on Friday (Oct. 18). Sophomore Titus Kirui crossed the line first in the men's 8K race in a time of 25:29.4. Titus Kirui (25:29.6-9th), and Emil Stanford (26:04.9-22nd) were the next two runners to finish the race for the Zips. Taye Gonzalez (26:27.4-28th) and Justin Zapotoczny (27:00.4-45th) rounded out the field. Sophomore Mary Munga led the Zips in the women's 6K race with a time of 20:48.6. Megan Hipple (21:29.0-6th), and Danielle Honaker (22:30.8-25th) were the next runners to finish for the women’s team. Grace Henderson (22:39.5-32nd) followed close behind with Kayla Sucharski (23:02.9-39th), Jadyn Towns (23:15.0-48th), Halle Sebest (23:34.5-58th) rounding out the women’s field. 
 
Ball State 
In their last meet of the regular season, cross country secured a fifth place finish at the Falcon Invite Friday afternoon on the Mel Brodt Cross Country Course. Carly Spletzer led the team, finishing ninth overall and crossing the finish line with a competitive time of 21:46.3. Sarah Mahnensmith came across next for the Cardinals, finishing 15th with a time of 22:03.9. Close behind was Evie Noel, finishing 17th with a new personal best time of 22:07.2, over a minute faster than her previous best. Shelby Christman finished 33rd, running over a minute faster than her last 6k of the season with a time of 22:40.8. Finishing 41st overall was Tori Jackson, who finished with a personal best time of 23:05.4. In next for the Cardinals was Jessica Velez, finishing 51st with a time of 23:18.1, followed by Jenna Schifferer who finished 71st with a time of 23:57.6. Rounding out the Cardinal squad was Autumn Spence, running a personal best time of 24:04.2, and Kendyl Thrasher with a time of 24:30.3 The team finished with a total of 102 points, landing them the fifth place position among 12 teams. 
 
Bowling Green 
The Bowling Green men's and women's cross-country teams raced a strong finish at the Falcon Invite which was hosted by Bowling Green. Notably, on the women's side, the Falcons finished in first place for the second year in a row. While, on the men's side, BGSU finished sixth overall. The meet was held on a beautiful fall afternoon and was a little warmer than it had been in recent days in Bowling Green. In the women's 6k, Bowling Green had four women finish within the top 10 to help secure a first-place finish and a score of 38. Junior Kylee Cubbison led all BG racers with a second place finish running a 20:52.20. Freshman Reese Reaman and Lexi Panning finished seventh and eighth at 21:35.40 and 21:38.70 in their first time running in the race in their collegiate careers. Junior Regina Rose rounded out the top 10 finishers from Bowling Green with a 21:49.40 finish for tenth place. On the men's side in the 8k, the men finished in sixth place ahead of fellow MAC school Ohio. Notably, BGSU had two finishers within the top 30 runners. Sophomores Micha Bentley and Ben Myers finished at 24th and 25thplace with scores of 26:20.70 and 26:23.80. 
 
Buffalo
The University at Buffalo cross country team competed close to home on Saturday afternoon, participating in the Canisius Alumni Classic at Delaware Park in North Buffalo for the third consecutive season. In the fifth meet of the season and the final before Mid-American Conference Championships, the Bulls set numerous personal records while finishing inside the top three in both the men's and women's races. The Buffalo men won the 8k race, with all five of their top five finishers in the top ten. Jacob Brink was the first-place finisher in the men's field of 119 runners, with a new personal best time of 24:23.6. Junior Matt Gensel (4th, 25:07.2) and graduate student Evan Hilbert (5th, 25:12.7) both placed inside the top five. Freshman Collin Stafford (7th, 25:19.3) and senior Sean O'Brien (9th, 25:29.7) rounded out the Bulls' top five finishers. Stafford's time of 25:19.3 was a new personal record for the freshman, who has now joined the Buffalo top five for the second race in a row. Following Stafford and O'Brien, the Buffalo men took six of the next seven spots, putting 11 Bulls in the top 16 finishers overall. Ty Fluharty was the 10th runner to finish, putting six Buffalo runners inside the top ten with a time of 25:29.7. Freshman Connor Domoy (11th, 25:38.7) and junior Luke Stoeffler (12th, 25:38.8) trailed, with all three Buffalo runners placing within ten seconds of each other. Gabriel Cornfield (14th, 25:42.9), Chris Turner (15th, 25:50.2) and Hayden Parks (16th, 20:50.50) all crossed the finish line within ten seconds of each other too. Aidan Norris was the 12th Buffalo runner to place inside the top 20 finishers with a time of 25:55.8. On the women's side, the Bulls took third place of the eight competing programs. Four of Buffalo's top five finishers set personal records on the 5k course. Lacey Danilovitz headlined for the Bulls with a seventh-place finish and a new personal best time of 18:12.5. Danilovitz has been Buffalo's top finisher in all four of the women's races she's competed in this season. Junior Bronagh Cassidy trailed Danilovitz by just six seconds (18:18.6) to take eighth place with a new personal best of her own. Eliza Medearis (14th, 18:40.0) and Vassi Klock (15th, 18:47.3) were the next two Buffalo runners to place, finishing within just seven seconds of each other. Both Medearis and Klock set new personal best times. Anna Recktenwalt rounded out the Bulls' top five by taking 20th and having a personal record of 18:58.7, putting five Buffalo runners inside the top twenty finishers.

Eastern Michigan 
The Eastern Michigan men's and women's cross country programs competed in two meets Friday, Oct. 18. The EMU women came in 11th place in the 6k at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M University at the Watts Cross Country Course, while the men took 12th in the 8k. At the Falcon Invite, hosted by Bowling Green State University at the Mel Brodt Cross Country Course in Bowling Green, Ohio, the Eagles came in 10th place behind Kent State in the women's 6k race. Starting the day off in the Lone Star State, Paige Marchant led the way in the women's race for Eastern Michigan with a personal-best 19:32 in the 6k to take seventh-place overall out of 402 total competitors. In addition, Eastern Michigan had two other athletes in the women's race come in the top 100, including Marta Moreno and Anita Zaro who had times of 20:30.6 and 20:41.9 to finish in 52nd and 68th place, respectively. All eight student-athletes from the Eastern Michigan women's team finished 207th or better and had 326 points in the race with five runners scoring. In addition, seven of the eight runners for Eastern Michigan set a new personal best in the 6k distance in the women's race. Coming in 12th place as a team, the Eastern Michigan men also ran eight student-athletes in the 8k race. Runners who scored in the race were Sam Peterson, Ronan Codyre, Ty Dailey, Kian Wiles and Isaac Garcia. The athletes placed 33, 48, 90, 100, and 125. Once again, Peterson led the men's team with a personal-best time of 23:32.6 in the 8k to come in 33rd place in a fast-paced race that saw 11 runners break 23 minutes.  Like the women's race, the Eagles had a total of three athletes finish in the top 100. Along with Peterson, runners that accomplished the feat in this race were Codrye (50th) and Dailey (93rd), who clocked times of 23:42.6 and 24:06.7, which are both 8k personal-best.  For the entire day, the Eagles set a total of 16 personal bests in their respective races.
 
Kent State 
Senior Baidy Ba won his second race in a row as the Kent State cross country teams closed the regular season on Friday at the Falcon Invitational. Ba crossed the finish line in the men's 8k in 24:43.5, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, for his third victory overall this season. The Golden Flashes placed fifth as a team. Graduate student Ethan Yostran ran his best 8k race of the season and finished seventh with a time of 25:15.0. Sophomore Rylan Winkler (26:48.2; 39th) and senior Jonah Cuestas (27:17.5; 50th) also posted top 50 finishes. The women finished ninth in the 6k, one spot of regionally ranked Eastern Michigan. Freshman Nora Salem was the Flashes' top runner, finishing in a personal-best time of 23:03.1 for 40th place. Senior Sydney Miller (23:42.7) and junior Nicole Kuehner (23:55.8) also ran sub-24:00 races to finish 64th and 68th, respectively.
 
Miami 
The RedHawk cross country teams wrapped up the regular season Saturday at the University of Wisconsin, running in the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals. The Miami women ran the 6k "B" race and finished in 28th place while the RedHawk men ran the 8k "B" race and finished in 18th place. For the women, Ava Nuttall was the highest placing RedHawk, coming in 60th place with a time of 21:40.6. Linda Conchetto finished in 147th place with a time of 22:47.9. Cara Razavi (22:57.8) and Ella Daddario (22:58.8) finished right behind Conchetto as they finished in 154th and 156th, respectively. Razavi also finished with a new PR, beating her previous best time by 11.7 seconds. Ella Boate rounded out the top five for the Miami women as she finished in 190th place with a time of 24:08.8. For the Miami men, Mhalicki Bronson led the way, taking 27th place with a time of 24:27.5. Chris Perkins finished in 81st place with a time of 25:08.3. Tom Heal (25:15.9) and Petros Sanchez Ropero (25:17.0) came in 96th and 98th, respectively. Patrick Wills finished in 112th place with a time of 25:28.7.
 
Northern Illinois 
Despite having just five runners finish, the Northern Illinois University women's cross country team earned an eighth-place finish in the white race at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday afternoon (Oct. 18) on the Newman Golf Course. Bailey Wilk paced the Huskies with a time of 23:20.79 to earn a top 50 finish. Wilk bettered her best six-kilometer time of the season by almost five seconds as she claimed 42nd overall. Rachel Dietrich was nearly 90 seconds better than her previous best 6K this year as she finished 73rd in 24:11.10. Emma Vorpagel ran 24:24.94, Morgan Gioia recorded a time of 24:27.87 and Carly Leonard finished in 25:47.53 today for the Huskies. 
 
Ohio 
The Ohio men's and women's cross country teams had multiple athletes finish with personal-best performances at the Bradley Pink Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18 in Peoria, Ill. Both teams represented Ohio well with the women placing fifth out of 32 teams and the men finishing 12th out of 29 teams. Ohio's top performers of the day were junior Leila Boussedra and sophomore Andrew Bracken. Boussedra placed 15th out of 259 runners in the women's red 6k race with a time of 20:42.93. Bracken placed 24th out of 265 runners in the men's red 8k race with a personal-best time of 24:19.32. The women's race featured three other Bobcats in the top 50 finishers. Senior Kelsi Harris took home 27th place with a personal-best time of 21:04.46. Junior Allie Martin followed behind in 38th place (21:11.99) and freshman Kaitlyn Stewart placed 45th with a PR of 21:18.86. Junior Alyssa Mason rounded out the top 100 finishers, finishing 74thwith a time of 21:40.96. Sophomore Eliza Streit also made an impressive improvement on her PR, finished 103rd with a time of 21:57.93. In the men's race, junior Franklin Angelos was the second Bobcat to cross the finish line. Angelos placed 44th overall with a personal-best time of 24:33.91. Ohio's next best finishers were sophomore Charlie Slates, junior Sam Beeler and sophomore Nick Kennedy. Slates finished 101st with a time of 25:00.78, Beeler finished 108th with a time of 25:07.22 and Kennedy finished 130th with a time of 25:18.99.
 
Toledo
The Toledo men's and women's cross country team wrapped up a two-meet day on Friday. The Rockets competed in the Princeton Fall Invite in Princeton, N.J. and the Falcon Invite in Bowling Green, Ohio. Dominic Serem paced the men's team at the Princeton Fall Classic, finishing the 8K race with a final time of 22:43.9 to earn a third-place finish in a highly competitive national field. The men's team took 13th place overall. Sophomore Joad Martinho was the second Rocket to cross the finish line, taking 43rd overall with a time of 23:46.1. The women's team placed 17th in the 6K race at the Princeton Fall Classic. The Rockets were led by senior Alex Bauer who recorded a 72nd overall finish with a final time of 20:56.7. Junior Morgan Hicks followed behind finishing in 94th with a time of 21:07.6. In the early evening, the Rockets competed in the Falcon Invitational at Bowling Green. The women's team had three runners in the 6K event, led by junior Aubrey Duhaime who finished in 13th with a time of 21:59.6. Senior Margrett Watt followed Duhaime, earning a 46th place-finish at 23:11.2. Junior Joy Chirchir took a 67th-place finish, grabbing a time of 23:55.2. Tesfaye Young was the sole Rocket in the men's 8K race at Bowling Green. The redshirt freshman finished 31st in the event with a final mark of 26:32.7.
 
Western Michigan 
The Western Michigan cross country team finished its regular season with a 23rd-place finish at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet on Saturday afternoon. Washington State, Air Force, Vanderbilt, Northeastern and Ohio State were the top-five team finishers. Lillian Zelasko paced the Broncos by finishing 36th with a time of 21:24.6. The race featured more than 200 runners, and Zelasko has finished in the top 40 of every meet she's competed in so far this season. Following Zelasko were Grace Aurand and Brooke Soper. Aurand crossed the finish line in a time of 22:19.5, while Soper was able to record a time of 22:32.7. The fourth runner to finish for WMU was Lily Overton, as she collected a time of 22:42.0. Closing out the scoring lineup was Lauren Sancrant, who registered a time of 23:00.6. Larissa McGrath (23:08.2), Lara Machado Pereira (23:16.0) and Delaney Knoll (23:22.1) were also strong for the Broncos on the course.
