MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 8, 2021) – Junior midfielder Luke McCormick of the No. 5-ranked West Virginia University men’s soccer team has been named the United Soccer Coaches Men’s Division I Player of the Week, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The Derby, England, native scored a goal and tallied an assist in WVU's two victories last week, which marked the first time it had earned back-to-back wins over ranked opponents since Oct. 18-21, 1998. He opened the scoring with a 21st-minute goal in a 2-1 win over then-No. 3 Pitt on Aug. 30, before he tallied the first assist of the night in the Mountaineers’ 3-1 victory over then-No. 17 Penn State on Sept. 3. For the week, McCormick finished with a team-high five shots (two on goal) in the two fixtures.

The honor continues a big week for McCormick, who also was named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Player of the Week on Monday and the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. He also earned national player of the week honors and was a member of the national team of the week by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Additionally, McCormick is the first Mountaineer men’s player to earn a national weekly honor by United Soccer Coaches since Jarrod Smith on Sept. 11, 2006.

West Virginia caps its four-match homestand by welcoming Ohio State to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
