BOONE, N.C. – App State Field Hockey won its first game against a Top 25 ranked opponent in school history on Friday night by beating No. 24 James Madison 2-0 in an intense defensive match.

After a scoreless first quarter, senior midfielder Friederike Stegen scored in a go-ahead corner play to put the Mountaineers up 1-0. Junior and freshman midfielders Pauline Mangold and Sterre Molkenboer assisted Stegen on the goal.

"Initially, I thought to do a drag flick, but I saw that the left side was open," Stegen said. "So I just tried to sweep to the left and it went in."

Stegen later assisted Carli Ciocco for the Mountaineers' second goal in the third quarter that put App State up 2-0.

"She (Stegen) passed me the ball down the side, and I was able to move around the goalie and score the goal," Ciocco said.

In the fourth quarter, both teams left it all out on the field. The Black & Gold held their lead and played aggressive defense to close out the Dukes, who took seven goals in the final period. Addie Clark finished with eight saves in the goal, including two dives that kept James Madison at zero points.

Head Coach Meghan Dawson spoke about their tough fourth quarter after the game.

"JMU was just going really hard. They had a lot of opportunities," Dawson said. "Our game plan was, defend, defend, defend.

"We needed to make sure that we didn't do any dangerous passes, and we played to the outsides and forced JMU to do a lot of work to try to attack and come back."

After this huge win, the Mountaineers have improved to 2-2 for the season, and look to grab another win this Sunday against Ohio State at 1 p.m. The neutral-site game will be played at Bessant Field in Charlotte, N.C.

Box Score
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The visiting UC-Davis Aggies got off to a hot start and defeated the homestanding Bellarmine Knights 5-1 on Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville.

In the opening 15 minutes of action, UC-Davis outshot the Knights 12-0 as the Aggies ran out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of Madison Theodore goals.  The senior from Carlsbad, California dribbled to the left side of the circle and outmaneuvered three Knights to register the game's first goal, and about a minute and a half later she got loose on a breakaway to notch her fourth goal of the season and second of the game.

The Aggies kept up the offensive pressure and extended the lead to 3-0 in the second period when Skylar Richards collected a rebound off a save and re-directed it in the goal.

After halftime, the Knights picked up the defensive pressure, but UC-Davis was able to convert a penalty corner in the third quarter to pull out to a 4-0 lead.

Bellarmine finally broke through for a goal when Teresa Schmidt scored on a penalty corner in the fourth quarter.  Amber Hofenk Jerembo received the insert on the corner then dished to Julia Doornebos who rifled a shot toward the goal. Schmidt, who had inserted the ball crept toward the goal and was able to get a stick on the missile fired by Doornebos to register her first goal of the season.

The Aggies never relented, however, and scored the game's final goal with about 75 seconds remaining in the contest to make the final 5-1.

Despite being saddled with the loss, Bellarmine goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter turned in another outstanding effort, collecting a season-high 15 saves to vault her over the 200 saves plateau and into third place on Bellarmine's all-time saves list.  Her career total of 208 is just 21 shy of former teammate Heather Gregory's 239 career saves, which is second place on the list.

Final team stats show significant advantages for the Aggies in the shot department, taking 34 on the day compared to just seven for the Knights.  Of those, UC-Davis held a 21-2 edge in shots on goal.

Bellarmine slips to 1-3 on the season while the Aggies extend their win streak to three games and improve to 3-2.

The Knights return to action on Sunday when they travel to North Carolina to face the Davidson College Wildcats.  Game time is 1 p.m.

Old Dominion 2, Longwood 1
Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. – On Friday night, Longwood field hockey put together an impressive effort and battled to the bitter end at Old Dominion. The Lancers nearly knocked off the 20th ranked Monarchs in Norfolk, but the Monarchs hit home a pair of goals inside the final three minutes to pick up their third straight win.

Nicole Fredericks and Jolene Ulichney played the role of hero for Old Dominion (3-1) as Longwood defense shut down ODU's leading scorers in Delphine Le Jeune and Marlon de Bruijne. Ulichney tied the match with her first collegiate goal, and Fredericks slotted home the game winner, her first of the season, off a penalty corner with 66 seconds left.

The late-game heroics offset a strong performance by Longwood (2-2) that saw Ana Paula Lazaro hit the back of the cage for a second straight match. Goalkeeper Madison Nuckols added five saves, a season high, as Old Dominion had five shots apiece in both the second and fourth quarters.

"Obviously to lose in the last three minutes, it's tough," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "But the way we played the game with the fight and determination we showed, we are very proud of the process and what we're putting together. So we took some good steps forward, but alas it was not to be. We are looking forward to William & Mary."

Paula Lazaro's goal came on the lone shot for either side in the first period, as the two sides settled into the match. For the sophomore, it was her second goal in as many games after scoring the game winner against Towson one week ago.

Over the middle periods, neither side could break through, as Old Dominion ripped off five shots in the second quarter. However, Nuckols was equal to the task, saving all four that were on target. Nuckols also saved a penalty stroke in the third, and Longwood pressed forward for four shots in the period but couldn't add to their total.

The Lancers finish up the two-match road swing with a trip to William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at noon. They return home to open MAC play against Bellarmine on Saturday, Sept. 18 at noon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
